Product Details

While Southsiders is a celebration of the group's fortitude, it is also a deeply introspective, and sometimes conflicted, work. "It's a natural progression from the last record, The Family Sign, which was about growing my family," says Slug, now a father to three, who finds himself contemplating mortality. "I'm starting to think, 'What is post–family man? What am I supposed to rap about now?' I'm sticking to my roots, rapping about what I'm doing, what I think about. This record is - much like the other ones - a very detailed look at my life."

The CD comes packaged in a custom printed plastic casing which contains a full color printed wallet, 16-panel accordion style insert, and 24-page lyric booklet.

Comment: Ant gets filthy on production, a wonderful backdrop for Slug to deliver his satirical poetry. Can't wait to see them live soon… Atmosphere shows anoint your soul. Slug is always in front welcoming everyone in like an ordained minister. I got mad respect for this crew for paying their dues, and touring the world tirelessly. No wonder they have a cult following.

Comment: This is actually a pretty good album. I didn't like it at first but it grows after a few spins.

Comment: I love how people just automatically default to insulting people who don't like this poor album. I never expected it to sound like GLU or Overcast. Family Signs is also a terribly boring album. I can recognize the difference between the growth of an artist both in age and in artistic grown but I'm also able to see the decline of both also which is present in this album and the one before it.

Comment: They took really good care of this one. It seems like their albums haven't been this good since God Loves Ugly or Seven's Travels, but then again Family Sign was good. This album is great.

Comment: 100% agree that they deserve respect, these dudes have made so many dope songs over the years. But it is evident on this album (and the previous one) that they are past their prime. Sure they can still drop a few dope tracks here and there, but overall the material is nowhere near as strong as their earlier releases. Not on here to beef with other Atmosphere fans or to sound like a d*ck, that's just honestly how I feel.

Comment: You f*cking idiots need to stop living in the past, Slug is 41 with a family he doesn't put out Overcast or God Loves Ugly anymore as much as you want that to be the case every album. I do admit Family Sign was a change of pace but this album is awesome ant hadn't lost anything with production and the lyrics are real life sh*t maybe some are too stupid to understand the message he's trying to get across. It's about progression and growth which is what is proven on this record. No intros, outros, interlude bullsh*t just a album of Slug and what he's feeling and going through.

Comment: Somethings just missing from this album, yeah Slug has gotten older, but the beats and tempo of these tracks are the same as on Family Sign. Sad to say this is one album i'll be skipping and just listen to his old shit. Blu, your the artist I'm looking at now. Slug, let's try and make a comeback and come up with new ideas based on your life now.

Comment: Just realized that "Flicker" is about the death of Eyedea. I didn't notice when I first heard it but after reading the lyrics online I realised that it is definitely about him.

Comment: I accidentally gave this 3 stars before and 3 more listens after that from start to Finnish. This album absolutely sucks from start to end on both lyrics and beats. So ridiculously soft it should have been released by Disney Records. Just stop making music if your going to be afraid of making the music the way you want. They should be embarrassed of this release.

Comment: Not only a great Atmosphere album but a great hip-hop album as well. Real lyrics. People who gave this 1 star are actually quite funny because they are so dumb.

Comment: A somber thump takes me through listens of this new Atmosphere release, and true to their name thats what they create, album lacks cuts and needs more visuals so we can see what inspires the apt introspective rhymes and accompanying atmospheric beats #shortfilmneeded grown up hip hop still learning to walk with wobbly legs, this release plays well with open ears.

Comment: I can't help but think when people say music has gone to shit, that this album belongs in that category. The family sign was a warning that slug was going soft, this album just seals the deal. All you bitches who try to justify his style are just suction cupped to his cock with your n*gger lips.

Comment: One reason Sean doesn't seem to be in the zone since everyone can remember is because he's more of an entreprenuer now than an artist. and quite sucessful with the Fifth Element record store and also the Sound Set Festival and maybe other endeavors. so he has created his own infrastructure, which is a greater contribution to hip hop music and culture, so why bitch about an album, lol?

Comment: I agree that this isn't the best album they've ever had and I agree that they hit their prime probably in the mid 2000s. However, that doesn't mean the new sh*t is bad, in fact it still expands on the overall influence of Atmosphere. I still stand by them as my favorite artist and, while they may be on their way down, they still have it in them. Look at it this way. We all change over time. This is the flow Slug and Ant feel after the last 25 years in the game. I don't have the same flow I used to and I'm barely an infant to this thing. They can't stay the same, Atmos is all about progression (ironic since he does have a lot of repeating concepts)just cause it aint still a style you like doesn't make it bad. it just isn't the style of rap that you like. Have love for all hip hop and all music. If you don't like it that's cool but some of you gotta cool it and not bash them so hard.

Comment: I like almost all Atmosphere releases but this is probably their most boring album yet. It's the type of album that makes you wonder why you're still listening to it before it's completed playing.

Comment: I love how butt-hurt some people get on here when we don't give a 5 star rating to every Atmosphere album. Had to comment here again just to put the rating down cause there's NO WAY this is a 5 star album. Most of it is too slow and Slug's flow is the same on most of the songs. There's only 4 songs on here that I didn't find boring and I mentioned what they were in an earlier review. Peace.

Comment: @gq: We stick around waiting for Atmosphere to drop something that's dope (and no, lyrically it doesn't have to be based on the same issues that Slug rapped about on earlier Atmosphere releases) Look at Blueprint, he's 37 years old yet he's still dope as fuck and always has something meaningful to say, why can't Atmosphere still be like that? I FUCKING HATE how some people use Slug's age to justify some of the weak shit that Atmosphere has put out. Check out "Which Way Is Up" or "It Ain't The Prettiest",(songs that Atmposphere have released in the past few years) those songs are proof that they are still capable of dropping hot shit but instead they fuck around with weak, lazy shit (like the 2 singles they've released so far from this upcoming album) My thoughts after first listen from the Pandora stream: Title track "Southsiders" is a banger, best song on the album. "Ms. Interpret" is cool as fuck and one of the best songs they've made in a long time. "The World Might Not Make It Through The Night" & "January On Lake Street" were ok. None of the other songs else really stood out for me. Overall, an average album with a few really good songs (in my opinion).

Comment: You guys want a happily married man and father at 41 years old rapping like a 20 something year old angry f*ck depressed with girl issues? That would be fake as hell and you so called hardcore hip hop heads know how much we hate artist being fake. So, Slug rapping the same sh*t as Overcast and God Loves Ugly wouldn't be him being true, the songs would seem forced because there wouldn't be any real emotion behind it. Maybe ya'll are still stuck feeling those emotions, that's why y'all want him to still talk about it, idk. You say he hasn't dropped anything solid since God Loves Ugly which came out 12 years ago. Yet, here you are commenting on this album and your low expectations from it. He's released 3 albums since several EPs, leaks and scbd albums in the process, yet here you are commenting on their upcoming release, why? If you don't like it, just move on to a different artist already, why still try to stick arounds?

Comment: Milly: He didn't hit our "daddy issues" but I think some of us commenting on here sure hit a nerve with you though. Not everyone on here is "spewing hate and nonsense", we are just pointing out that we think Atmosphere fell off on their last few releases.

Comment: Been an Atmos fan since 96. Industrial Warfare, Effort, SCBD2, Se7en, Overcast, and Dynospec are absolute proof that Rhymesayers used to fucking BANG! It's been awhile since Slug has dropped anything worth keeping in rotation though. Not really feeling the new track Bitter either. Still try to hit up the live shows when I can, but I'll probably skip this record. Hard not to miss the Headshots days.

Comment: My fave Atmosphere albums are "Lucy Ford" & "God Loves Ugly". I understand artists have to progress and change up their sound, but the next 4 albums they released after that just didn't appeal to me as much. And "Bob Seger" and the first single off this new album are slow and dull in my opinion. That track they released last year "It Ain't The Prettiest" was way better. I'm hoping that they'll have some faster songs like that on this latest release.

Now that would definitely blow alot of minds for sure...peace to Kevin Beacham...true head righ there. and.... im....out!!!

Comment: First single I heard was atrocious. Slug should never try to croon it's fucking embarrassing. Outside of a few good beats on "you can't imagine how much fun we're having", Ant hasn't made a good beat since God Loves Ugly. Just quit rapping and raise your son and be sad face that Macklemore stole your flow, dumbed down your lyrics and won a Grammy.

Comment: Steve, I agree. Actually the last 2 albums were terrible and slow. Everything before that was pretty good and there were some Boom bap head nod tracks on the older stuff. I mean It depends on how critical you are on music. Atmosphere has for the most part put out quality music. If you have heard the whole basic discography and haven't noticed any head bopping music , then you obviously haven't heard it all. Go from overcast and listen till "I cant imagine how much fun were having" and you will have that nod Factor.
