Summary

Atmosphere returns with their 7th official studio album and the newest addition to their unparalleled body of work. The Family Sign comes from a place well refined and firmly planted, from a universal perspective. It's about being okay with losing friends and strengthening your bonds with others, celebrating the person who's been the most positive in your life, your kids, your homies, leaving the people you need to behind, and bringing the ones you love with you. It's about your family, your time and the time you have with them. It's about living and dying. It's the truth about family, that it comes from loyalty as much as biology. It's about breaking down your perceptions of family and really appreciating the people who've made you who you are and continue doing so.

The Family Sign is Atmosphere's most personal and intimate album yet; it involves and engages the listener like never before. Slug's signature voice weaves in and out of Ant's ASR-born production, Nate Collis' bluesy guitar riffs and the sound of Erick Anderson's unmistakable keys giving The Family Sign a fresh, unique edge without sacrificing Atmosphere's signature sound.

Join the Family April 12th, 2011.

Custom printed heavyweight digi-pak that doubles as a picture frame with stand. Includes 5 silver foil stamped pictures backed with lyrics that can be changed in the frame.

Comment: ant's beats have gotten better since the beginning of atmosphere, but still far from the level they should be, compared to others. what comes to slug and lyricism, he has always been just another of those emo-rappers. this album is not an exception.

Comment: I give this 3 stars just for the fact that it is a good listen.. It is however not great.. And IMO Slug fell pretty far off on this.. He just doesnt rip any song like Im use to Slug doing.. My favorite part of Atmosphere was Slug.. I thought he was the best emcee alive.. But on this album, there just isnt any great emceeing going on.. Just pretty good rapping.. And for that reason I gave it a 3..

Comment: Been an Atmosphere fan since Overcast! dropped. Over these years I've witnessed the group grow and change, with the music now more mature. How can all you 1&2 star folk possibly diss Atmosphere for maturing with age? Surely we all change as we grow older? If you don't then, man your life must suck living with your mum listening to so called 'real hip-hop'. GREAT ALBUM, but maybe just for those older hip-hop heads!!!

Comment: The only reason I give this cd 2 stars is for the beat on Millenium Dodo. Other than that, Slug sucks big time right now, and I have all of previous his releases. It's a shame but it's time for Ant to move on. Now I can see Ant producing an album for lets say maybe P.O.S or Cecil Otter that would be bananas!

Comment: Probably give this 4.5 stars. Its downtempo hip hop and its good. I didnt really like the last ep and have been listening to Atmosphere for around 8 years. This album is growing on me, Slug and Ant have incorporated downtempo with blues, soul and jazz very nice. People can hate because its their opinion and I know this isnt for everybody, I think its essential that people broaden their horizons and taste in hip hop, there are many different forms, I myself can appreciate it and like Jedi Mind, Ill Bill, Doomtree, Sandpeople, Elemental Zazen, thug rap to Emo. I find most people either like one form of genre of hip hop and cannot listen to the others, its usually thug rap and nothing else, or pop hop, or emo. Try somrthing new and dont hate just because it doesnt conform to your type of music.

Comment: I really want to love this album. I do. But it's just not what it could be. I get that they're trying to change their style and keep their sound fresh, but there's no need to; their old one worked perfectly fine. This sounds more like a collection of demos than an actual album. I can see this working in the future, but I wouldn't recommend buying this one.

So let me get this straight, only guys with tight jeans like atmosphere? if the dude makes good music and lyrics are always on point, then who gives a shit. you obviously have nothing else better to do then to come on here, read every rating and call everyone gay because this isnt a vinnie paz album. get the Phuc out of here. your as cool as aids and cornier than my shit after thanksgiving dinner

Comment: If you like this it's probably because either A. You're a girl B. You're wearing your girlfriends pants and the lack of blood flow to your balls is making you a flaming fag. For real, when did it become ok for "hiphop" fans to wear girls jeans? Like to punch every one of you fags in the face.

Comment: mad props on that review d-stroi. that is exactly the case with this album it has to grow on you. when I first listened to it when it dropped yesterday (after I went to a store and bought a cd-oh shit) I wasnt very thrilled. but I bumped that shit again this morning and I was really feeling it, as usual with rse releases I can tell there is gonna be a bunch of tracks I like at different times and changing favorite tracks. I gotta say that first single just for show, at first I thought the video was 10x more interesting than the song itself. but now I find myself enjoying the fuck outta that track. favorite tracks right now 4,7,9,10 shouts to 2,3,5,12,13. By the way this album is really a 3.5-4/5. I rounded it up because that rating is too weak. By the way for anyone curious yes this is better than "To all my friends...". and although I hear some of y'all and agree about ant, he is getting kinda boring to listen to whole albums from now, but he really does have some great work on this lp. he does have clunkers, but it is worth pointing out and giving him some love by saying that he also has moments of brilliance here too. If UGHH throws the audio up peep track #7 Millenium Dodo, see if you agree.

Comment: i was looking forward to this album for months and when it was finally released, I bought it just cause its slug and ive been a fan for years. The lyrics and the message slug was trying to portray were as always, amazing and very touching. But I was hella disappointed in ant's production. more than half of the beats ive listened to were dreadful to listen to. Ant needs to step his game up

Comment: i dont know why people put "evolving" in quotation marks like its not the truth or something. clearly atmosphere is going into a different direction sound wise. if you dont like it then cool, dont listen to it but to rate this album a 1 or a 2 is ridiculous. you are basically saying this is the same type of shit that lil wayne or drake drop or is equivelant. Slug is a dope writer and consistently shows that on every record he spits on. who are we to judge? if you give this album a chance you will see that it grows on you. For this particular album and the sound they tried to interupt, I think compliments the album all together. great storytelling and consistency on the record. bigups for the release

Comment: If you are judging Atmosphere album to album you are missing them comletely. The movement they created in Minneapolis that they expanded to the Midwest, later the entire US, and now world wide is incomprehensible to a person growing up in the Midwest, especially the Northern part. Rhymesayers puts it down! Atmosphere has soo much good music in their catalogue you can bet this album will have A LOT to offer and add to their legacy. I'm always waiting to hear what Atmosphere will sound like next. One thing I can count on in the hip hop game IS Slug and Ant being consistent with good music.

Comment: once again people on here being the critic. Atmospheres sound always progresses and ant is a dope producer. Slug is also a dope emcee who constantly paints pictures with consistent wordplay. why are all of you continuely bagging on this dude? Although his older music from back in the days is my favorite but as an artist you need to progress and not digress. why do the same shit? what, do you want to hear a "woman with the tattooed hands part II"? would be cool but Sluggo is beyond that now and incorporating real live guitars and keyboards along with ants productions. I personally have no beef with any of the last releases that atmosphere put out. im looking forward to this release
