Comment: Personally, I feel like any track titled "Shut It Down" is going to have trouble impressing me. Even as I clicked on the audio link to this joint, I couldn't get the classic “Shut Em Down, Shut Em Down, Shut Em Shut Em Shut Em Down" hook to the timeless Pete Rock remix to Public Enemy's “Shut Em Down". For all those interested, our high school soccer highlight tape had that joint on in the background for the defensive stops sections. Pardon me as I reminisce, but I still pop that VCR tape back in every now and then, watching my old school buddies score sloppy goals and make half-ass tackles to Public Enemy, Grand Puba, De La Soul, Ed OG, and Brand Nubian. Shit was glorious. The point of all this is it would be pretty damn hard for me to like this new song called “Shut It Down" as I'm basically daydreaming about my soccer glory days as I attempt to listen to it and actually prepare myself to critique it. But in all honesty, despite all my reluctance, this track is pretty nice. It's not a 2007 update of PE's joint (fortunately since those “let's redo a classic" type joints almost always fail). Black Milk delivers his trademark boom-bap meets soul style beat. Highlights include the crispy, neck-snapping snare drums, the accentuating piano highlights, and the timely female vocal sample. In particular, I'm digging the “nothing's gonna stop, nothing's gonna stop, nothing's gonna stop me" sample on the hook. Perhaps a bit chipmunk paced for my liking, but it serves the purpose well and really seems to fit the theme of my daydreams where I basically am an unstoppable force on the soccer field, shortly followed by my same success with the young lovelies in the post game celebrations. I also am a big fan of Black Milk's use of negative space or pauses at certain points in the beat. Helps bring a sense of urgency to the song, as well as bring attention to certain desired elements of the beat. Fresh for '07 all you suckas!!!!!!!!!!
