Summary

Experience an experiment turned masterpiece..."NoYork"! When asked about the title selected, Blu explains, "It's not a state, it's a state of mind." Around the world Blu has created a massive following through consistently releasing top notch projects, presenting it in a way that listeners not only relate, but also reelect the many messages that he gets across through his music. Following the success of his highly heralded "Below The Heavens", "Johnson & Jonson", and "HerFavoriteColo(u)r", Blu reenters the world of music w/ "NoYork", a 14 song album filled with poetic twists and turns, cinematic tales of real life and imagination, and deep urban scapes only Blu as an artist can paint.

"NoYork" covers a wide spectrum of sound displaying the production of such beat icons as Flying Lotus, Exile, Madlib, Shafiq Husayn, Daedalus, & Samiyam. Blu's theory to apply timeless vocals over memorable instrumentals works in a way that he now forefronts a new genre, placing the LA beat scene on a much deserved pedestal. Within the detailed textures of "NoYork", it is apparent that Blu is influenced by many other genres than just hip hop. Possessing more electronic moods than just hip hop. Possessing more electronic moods than his previous releases, trails of psych rock, dub, broken beats, and jazz, all mix together to create a perfect representation of the artist that Blu has evolved into. In the earlier part of the album, songs like "Doing Nothing" & "Above Crenshaw" remind all of how Blu has mastered his craft and has worked passionately towards his kingship. Uptempo synth driven songs like "Annie Hall" and "Work" show his diversity in being able to step out of the box and give you a glimpse of the maximum potential that he possesses. Midway through "NoYork", Blu falls back into his nostalgic portal, full of stylee rap bars and sample-based music, often explored in his previous projects. Receiving over 100,000 views in the first week, the first video for the song "Sunshine" touches on familiar vibes and topics that many of the his previous fans are used to, but at the same time creating a much-needed balance between golden era hip hop and the future of music.

Comment: This is on some LOW END THEORY/BRAIN FEEDER/ALPHA PUP straight out of Los Angles type of shit that is known to the electronic music world from SF to NY to Europe to japan type of IDM(music) production. The first song I heard from this album was "Ronald Morgan" and it was playing on KZSU's Frequency Jam. I gotta admit im a fan of EDAN since 1999 and before that I got to hear some of that Architecture. and it shows the versatility and quality of his rhymes. Now Blu on the other hand gives it that west coast swag, and it dont stop... I think snoop on the cover completes the package lettin ya known where its comin from and id be thrown my dubs up from the left coast or is it the right? no its cali-forn-ya. no its No York.

Comment: Fresher than next week’s beats! Blu, this ish is dope! Keep doin your thing man. This is definite progression from your earlier work (which was still excellent). This is creative and more mature as you’ve taken some risks with both your writing and the production. Some people just won’t get it so ignore the haters. NoYork! may not be for everyone. If you’re only into gangsta rap or most of the mainstream crap that’s out there you probably won’t like this. But for those of you who are open-minded and like things that may not be as easily accessible, don’t sleep on this!

Comment: This album is dope. If you want blu & exile type stuff, then listen to "give me my flowers..." This is an explorative album gets better with each listen similar to the Johnson & jonson joint.

Comment: Album's very good. The musical concept of the album, might be what's throwing a lot of people off. Transitions from electronica to jazz, during the course of the album, and, in my opinion, it has a brilliant effect, in regards to the album's overall concept. Blu's going over people's heads, as usual. Don't sleep on this one.

Comment: If I could give this a half a star I would. With all the hype around Blu, he hasn't come out with any decent shit in awhile. He needs to stick with Exile and put out some quality produced material, as opposed to this experimental bullshit he's been fucking around with. He needs to take things seriously, because I'm losing interest in him and I'm sure a lot of other people are too.

Comment: This is a thrown together kind of thing (honestly its a mix-tape). Yeah Blu puts out too much material, but the 5 stars goes to Edans verse on whatever the name of the track is with him. You should all consider yourselves blessed to hear a verse by EDAN. yes edan took your mother to the prom.
