    Summary

A dashing young figure in the Los Angeles underground hip hop scene, Busdriver returns with his latest, Jhelli Beam - both smart and smartass, theatrical without being pompous, and, as always, funny as hell. BD's legendarily breath-defying flow teeters precariously on top of samples of classical music, jazz drumming and proggy guitar parts, without ever losing sight of the electronic music that helped define his sound, enthralled fans and stood out from the soggy beats that weighed down much of his contemporaries' work. Sound schizophrenic? It's not. And as usual, Busdriver has some heavy friends to help out: legendary underground battle rapper Nocando guests on a classically witty Busdriver track "Least Favorite Rapper" while Islands' precocious Nick Thorburn's influence can be heard on an almost ELO-flavored song "Happy Insider." The sum of Jhelli Beam's seemingly disparate parts creates a record that is mindfully engaging and booty shaking at the same time - a wholly unique take on what an underground hip-hop album should be.

Comment: This guy is proof anyone can drog an album. For instance, I dropped this one out my car window after one track. I think this guy should stick to being an actual bus driver.

Comment: What I really like about this album is that it doesn't have that Eastcoast boring fall asleep take a nap rap lyrics! It has real mc skills and not those same looooooooped beats. Hoist up yet another Project Blowed trophy for this one.

Comment: Busdriver is one of the most talented mc's on the planet. The shit he can pull off in a verse is seriuosly bonkers. Granted, you have to be into strange type, non "standard" style hip hop to dig him, but once you start feeling him he really delivers. I will also say the beats also have gotten extremely good on his recent projects.

Comment: Busdriver has been a west coast underground legend for 15 years! Check out his early stuff, It's a little rough but dope! Peep "Memoirs of th Elephant Man", and "Temporary Forever", Hes an aquired taste. Like most dope westcoast underground , you need to start with their earlier stuff then work your way up to the new!

Comment: I was never a Busdriver fan until mad recently, when I picked up Fear Of A Black Tangent which I loved, and thus copped this joint which is off the slam chain in my humble opinion. While I understand how BD can be too much at first, once you get past that, he's really one of the most original and interesting emcees in the hip hop world in general. If you're down with abstract avantcore space rap or are looking for something completely different I highly recommend this album, it's a breath of fresh air. Props to Nocando for a super slam guest shot too.
