    Summary

A veteran of the acclaimed hip-hop labels Definitive Jux, and Fondle 'Em Records, Chris Palko, better known as Cage, has been intimately connected to the underground hip-hop scene as early as 1991, having worked with legends such as El-P, KMD, Necro, Godfather Don, K-Solo, and more. Since that time, Cage has become known as much as a pioneer of horrorcore rap, as for his dark and paranoid rhymes on underground favorites like "Radiohead", "Agent Orange", and "That Smut", from his work with the hip-hop group Smut Peddlers. His 2002 debut Movies For The Blind is considered an essential underground album to this day, scoring critical acclaim and a Billboard Hot 100 spot. In recent years Cage has gone on to appear on Kid Cudi's Top 5 Billboard release Man on The Moon 2, and has worked with Shia LaBeouf, DJ Shadow, Jello Biafra, and numerous others.

Now in 2013, Cage returns to the scene with Kill The Architect which will hit stores on October 22nd. The album marks the return of longtime NYC indy label Eastern Conference Records, the imprint with which Cage worked to release a number of albums including Movies For The Blind. The project also finds long time collaborator and Eastern Conference head DJ Mighty Mi back behind the boards for the majority of the project.

Comment: Copywrite was talking some sh*t about Cage a few months before KTA was released. The lyrics "You wanna be the king, I wanna overthrow one" (from "You Were The sh*t"...) could be a reference to Copywrite's "God Save The King" album. I could be wrong though.

Comment: I agree with the guy mentioning the leaks, shorten to EP. I've been a big Cage fan for a long time. Some tracks do miss, but I like the CD. Cage has moved on with his career. But one track I've been "hearing" differently lately. The track "You Were The Shit (In High School)" as if directed at Eminem. High School = The early 2000's. So many people (myself often) want to hear old Cage do new tracks, but Cage seems content to let that go. That old delivery was so ill, it wasn't just the material. I wish he'd understand that's where most of us are coming from. But that's why I got online just now was to look up and see if any one else thought the track towards Em and us fans that won't stop bitching about the past. Listen to the track again in that way and tell me I'm crazy.

Comment: Dope! His best since Hells Winter. Very moody, atmospheric and dark album. One MC & one producer no features. Headphones and kush and he's gonna take you on a dark trip with all the vivid imagery and dark humor we've come to expect. Don't sleep on this album. Cage wins!

Comment: @D-Stroi it's kinda funny that u mention that because that because apparently he mentions icp on his new album,i can't remember the track off the top of my head, anyway that was 14 years ago and that shit has been squashed so not gonna speak on that,as far as what your saying total agreement on that, can't please everybody all the so I goes for mine and make no apologies for it,props to ya partner and peace!!!! @D-Stroi the name of the track is asshole where he mentions them and their miracles track, not sure if its a diss or not but like I said that's ancient history so won't speak on that.see ya!!!

Keep doing you. Keep doing what moves you and whatever makes you happy. That is all that matters at the end of everyones day period.

Comment: ok, I have given it several spins over the past few weeks (the actual album, not the leak--yes, it made a big difference. I was listening to the leak on my phone actually. this is actually a solid release, that could've been a classic ep if it were cut down to the stand-outs: lamb of nothing, precipiss, cursed, the hunt, you were the shit, fuck this game, wildlife awaits, merry mithras, and kill the architect to end it. the other songs have dope verses then godawful hooks. overall, i'm glad I purchased now. and I hated the leak. this has happened to me with many other albums, think I need to stop scoping leaks before giving an album a chance. oh well.

Comment: @D-Sstroi, no problem homie, just speaking on something that needs to said hey we all have different ideas on what shit is dope and what's not and as far as Eminem goes i'm not not saying that he doesn't have some good tracks ,just not feeling his shit but I won't hate on anybody for doing so because that's their choice and I respect somebody who has an opinion and stands by it rather than somebody who just goes with whatever the flavor of the month is,hell i'm an icp fan and the amount of flack that we get is crazy but hey I dig them and make no apologies for it,with cage I have heard some of his stuff and I dig it that's why I bought his cd and am on this website giving him props.that's why we have forums like this so ideas and views can be exchanged and have some relevant discussions on the underground hip hop that is keeping the music alive and not be watered down like the mainstream has done to a fault. some food for thought on that, peace.

Comment: @Craig, much respect man. Like I said before with regards to Em, I think he is a very talented emcee and probably one of the best to do it but in my opinion, no one is touching R.A. lyrically, period! If Em went back to his roots lyrically with dope producers, he would no doubt be back to the level he once was at. Work with producers like Alchemist or Premo, not Lil Wayne type of producers. Shit, have Dre do your whole albums like in the past but unfortunately, the sounds used today for production are so different and disappointing. Only the true heads understand. If you are a dope lyricist but use shitty beats, then that is half-assed and un-necessary. I get that you need to make money and I am not one to take food out of someone's mouth but someone like Em with the talent that he has can use dope production to put out a cd that everyone would like even the commercial heads. Do you think that the radio friendly people wouldnt like an Eminem cd done by alchemist or even Premo? Its freaking Eminem and anyone would support his music. Ok I digress. No more talk about Em because this is about Cage and his current project. I actually give this a 4 star rating because I think he could have stepped up his flow on this album a little better. He seems like he has the prodigy (mobb deep) slow flow disease on this album. A few tracks like that are cool but not the whole album. Either way, this cd in my opinion is dope and if you support the underground movement, then you should cop this. Peace!!

Comment: This is a solid album. I didn't like his last two albums but this one is dark and twisted and sounds dope. "Fuck this Game" is my fav track on this one. All these people expecting some 20 year old shitty Mighty Mi beats need to step out of the cave and get out once in awhile. That era is over.

Comment: Good album. I did expect a little more from Cage. Bummed not to see any WM posse cuts but still far better than 90% of whats coming out in the mainstream AND underground. Would have like to see some harder beats too

Comment: @Where is your album, what is your point? If you check my prior posts in regards to Cage, I have nothing but positive input about the emcee. I made an opinion towards Eminem, nothing more. Am I not entitled to do so? What does this mean? Get off the Eminem,Cage, RA the rugged man shit...that's 12 year old news! Did you just wake up from your wack emcee coma? Let me retort in a less angrily manner on this topic. Am I wrong in regards to the R.A. Vs Eminem debate? If so, then that is fine but again that is my opinion. I actually think Eminem is a dope emcee dating back to the Rawkus shit but lately he has succumbed to the radio pop sound that I do not ingest. Sorry homie. Dude is talented but what happened? Hopefully his new album that is dropping will be dope. Either way, I will cop this album and support the underground movement. I respect your opinions Chiraq so respect everyone elses please. Peace

Comment: 3.5 stars, actually. It's weird... upon first listen I was completely letdown. On second listen, I was like wow this is actually pretty solid! There are no huge standout singles or such, but the album has a nice consistent atmosphere and overall vibe. I expected way different beats from Mighty Mi, but what has been provided is good enough.

Comment: Now that it has leaked, I'd like to amend my statements accordingly-- this is another wack release with a few (already leaked) exceptions: precipiss, the hunt, & this place. don't know what the hell happened to cage. I pre ordered so I'll give it another shot, but it's no classic. No movies or hellz. Rather fucking sloppy. I dug the snippets but when you listen to the songs in full, they aren't put together well and the hooks are atrocious. Coming from a fan.

Comment: WOW!!! Not at all what I was expecting out of these 2. I was hoping they were gonna bring it back to that Smut Peddlers era. But instead it's like they took the worst parts of Depart From Me and made a full album out of it. I was a huge Cage and Mighty Mi supporter even up until D.F.M. There was even a few good tracks on that one. But this is just straight fuckin garbage!!! Boring beats all the way through. Lazy off time whiny flow. Babbling nonsense. I was planning on purchasing this one but fuck all that!

Comment: Can't wait to get my copy. Cage and Mighty Mi always have complimented each other musically, and even in their growth seperately as artist/producer in the past 8 years they still do mesh extremely well on this project. Anyone that is disappointed with this album just haven't accepted and learned that Cage as an artist is dead set against regression sonically. He consistently reinvents himself and brings something new to the table sound wise, while finding new ways to convey the haunting & visceral subject matter he has always been greatly heralded for. I don't get why people get so asshurt over the fact he doesn't sound like it's 2002 again. The only downside I see to this album is you don't get the bonus cuts, and the Itunes snippet for the song "Wildlife Awaits" sounds superb. Alot of people were not feeling DFM, I actually enjoyed it, but I also didn't try to compare it to anything else he's done previously rather than just enjoy the album for what it was. It had much more of a Suicidal Tendencies DIY punk feel than anything, but the songs I liked from it grew on me with time.

Comment: It's difficult with Cage, Movies for the blind and Night Hawks were classics, but Hells Winter was equally great in different genre of hiphop. Depart from me was weak as fuck mainly due to poor writing and the worst production i've ever heard Cage on. This is going to be the decider for me on whether Cage has completely lost it or whether there's some of the old school left in him. I've pre-ordered regardless.

Comment: Actually am really feeling the snippets. This isn't a "return" to the old style ( tho I wouldn't mind a return album at all). Old Cage sound was angry, full of vitriol. This shit is more nihilistic, and dark as fuck. Dude switches up style every release. Everything sounds different.

Comment: It's a common misconception that a movement in any direction is progression. Movies for the blind and Night hawks are classic but after that he went completely wacky. From grimy NY emcee to tight pant emotional. Clearly this dude is fake as hell and just trying to find a market to appeal to and it didn't work. Anyone who can't spot that this guy is fake is a loser.

Comment: depart from me was weak. no way around it. it just flat out stunk. slow, soft, corny. cage was rapping at a lower level. the songs were going for some kinda indy rock vibe. punk rock I hate myself type crap. however. this album sounds fucking dope. the beats sound pretty good, and cage is rapping incredibly dark twisted shit that I grew to expect from him. he doesn't sound like pcp infused cage where he's scraming. he sounds depressed and artistic. something new. I will be copping this shit. I never count cage out cuz the guy can write incredible stuff and has crazy mic presence. nice return to form cage.

Comment: I never understood the Cage hate, or skepticism. He always put out dope releases: for your box, weatherproof, hellz, movies, leak bros, and all the random mix tapes too. He had one awful album. Regardless of what anyone says, the lyricism on dfm was sloppy at best. Way too dumbed down. No neat lines, or cool rhyme schemes. Nothing to do with content or beats, for me the lyricism just got so lazy and trite. Only good songs from that era were I found my mind and hugs and kisses. Lyricism is totally back btw, far as I've been hearing. All the new kta tracks, even the throwaway stuff he released a while ago. Sometimes I wish the delivery were more hyped, but this new delivery works too in its way. songs are creepy and atmospheric, pretty neat. Can't force kid to put out another summer in hell or fanatic I guess. New shit kinda reminds me of mersh.

Comment: I agree with you that he's at his best when he's angry. I liked the few songs i've heard from this album so far, but they're kinda' slow. I'll be disappointed if there isn't any faster stuff on it. I've heard a few of the snippets but I don't want to give my opinion on it until i've heard all the songs in full on the release date.

Comment: Judging an album based on what you heard live isn't such a great idea, I think if you checked out the full "Hells Winter" album you'd like some of it, it is rated as a classic and a lot of critics rated it highly when it was released. A lot of Cage fans who liked his early material were really digging some of the new songs he dropped last year like "Misanthrope" and "Super Baked", you should check those out on You Tube. I understand what you're mean about liking his older shit better, a lot of others feel that way too, I just think he's made a lot of good songs since then also.

Comment: These people saying Cage was only good when he was on drugs must have never heard his "Hells Winter" album. And he was NEVER emo, he might have had that look during the Depart From Me era but the sound was Electronic/Hip Hop/Rock and he still rapped about dark shit. The people still complaining about that album are the one's who sound emo. As far as him no longer being relevant, he changes his sound up on every release, he's progressive, so his music still matters.

Comment: So is this person named kennylz on here Cage himself? Or just someone that is such a fan that had to use this name? All I was saying was who cares that it says he is a pioneer of horrorcore. You Could even go as far as saying gravediggaz, flatlinerz or kool keith pioneered it as well. And don't ever mention cage and icp in the same sentence. Opps I just did...

Comment: Just to be clear: It was someone who works for UGHH dot com that said Cage was horror-core, that's what started all the discussion about horror-core on here. As for the snippets from this Cage album, i've only listened to a few and they sound great, I pre-ordered it today.

Comment: bob:the reason we're talking about the horrorcore is giving credit where its due, geto boys did start this genre but never got credit for it ,esham being underrated in this genre and and the ones like necro and icp who have taken this style and made it what it is today. if cage is considered this style hey props to him besides who cares what you rock,if its dope i'll take listen and judge from there, good music always comes through.

Comment: Your all getting off topic with this horrorcore talk. Face it, Cage's earlier stuff was dark and amazing, then more drugs and it started going downhill. Then he got got all emo-ish which was a big shock. This album seems alright but I have to give it a real listen. I just wish his rhyme style was the same. I wish there was an explanation for what this reuniting with mighty mi.

Comment: thought so on the geto boys remake it was a way sicker version than the original, that version of the geto boys was more a texas version of run dmc where the latter was just some straight up grimy murder u shit, plus the icp version was them paying homage to them and I think they definitely did right by the song with a few subtle changes in the lyrics, but a great version none the less.

Comment: I have some of esham's cd's(boomin words from hell, detroit dogshit, the lost vault vol.1,acid rain,repentanance,a-1 yola, butcher shop compilation, sacrificial lambz, suspended animation so I do know a little bout the legend that is esham,as far as the geto boys go they more were credited for doing gangsta rap,but assassins is straight up horror movie shit in a nutshell,as far as cage goes haven't heard too much from him.

Comment: I agree about Esham being under-rated. The product description on this page states that Cage was a pioneer of horror-core, i'm sure Cage would disagree with that though. He did do some of that in his early music but his style has evolved so much since then.

Comment: word on that kennylz, was and still am a fan of the geto boys shit and they did pioneer the horrorcore genre w/assassins and remade it on the 1990 release that Geffen records refuse to release because of the lyrical content, hell icp remade this song on their 1999 release amazing jeckel brothers and icp I give more credit to than cage anybody, the only reason I know about cage is because necro did shit on his first album and that's pretty much it,necro raps this style but calls it death rap.x is also right w/esham who I think is definitely underrated in this genre, plus his albums are almost non existant and you would be lucky to find them, but if you can get them definitely worth the money for sure, peace.

Comment: Word. Any time I hear of any artist doing anything considered shocking or "horror core" I think of The Geto Boys. They did some of the scariest music ever and they were definitely the first group I heard that fit that mold. "Assassins" and "Mind Of A Lunatic" instantly come to mind as a couple of their early efforts. They started the whole genre as far as I'm concerned. And Scarface is one of the most under-appreciated dudes in the game.

Comment: Geto Boys were doing that horrorcore shit before it was even called horrorcore, way before Esham and Natas. Geto Boys song "Assassins" from 1988 pioneered horrorcore in my opinion.
