Product Details

Camu Tao, the legendary MC, producer, and singer, whose life was tragically cut short on May 25th, 2008 after a protracted battle with lung cancer, will have his debut solo album and final statement, King of Hearts, posthumously released on August 17, 2010 as a collaborative release between Fat Possum Records and Definitive Jux. Described by friends, peers and colleagues as "wild, proud, loving, tough, outspoken, spontaneous, and brilliant," Tao was a creative powerhouse whose output was as staggering in its scope of influences as it was emotionally evocative. El-P describes King of Hearts as "raw, exciting and unlike anything anyone has heard." Even newer school rappers feel the impact of Camu's work, "These songs are so before their time it's ridiculous" says Kid Cudi. Cage sums up the album as "a masterpiece in the making."

Camu got his start in the late 90's alongside RJD2 and Copywrite in Columbus, OH's seminal hip hop group MHZ whose releases were issued by Bobbito Garcia's legendary vinyl only label Fondle 'Em Records. After dropping his cult classic solo debut 12-inch Hold the Floor on Definitive Jux in 2001 he went on to become a central fixture at the label, his distinctive contributions playing a key role in The Weathermen (his crew with Aesop Rock, Cage, El-P, Yak Ballz, Tame One and Breeze Brewin) and as one half of S.A. SMASH (alongside Keith "Metro" Lawson) on their 2003 Def Jux full length album Smashy Trashy. As a producer his brilliant contributions are evidenced on Cage's seminal album Hell's Winter, and The Perceptionists' Black Dialogue, as well as appearances on Aesop Rock's Danger, Fire & Knives, El-P's Fantastic Damage and Collecting the Kid, Prefuse 73's Surrounded By Silence, and many, many others.

At the time of his death Camu Tao was working on what his friends and colleagues anticipated to be his breakthrough solo record, King of Hearts, initially scheduled for release on Definitive Jux in 2008, but left incomplete in the wake of his cancer diagnosis. Pieced together from the demos and home recordings he left behind (which have subsequently earned him fans amongst such esteemed peers as Dangermouse, Kid Cudi, and many others), the new release offers a privileged view of a magnum opus in the making by a blossoming visionary who was denied the opportunity to bring his unique masterpiece to fulfillment. The record marks a departure from his former works, most notably as it finds Camu favoring a distinctively playful, semi-soul croon as well as the off-kilter and wild rapping that earned him a reputation among peers and fans as an innovative genius. Musically King of Hearts delves into realms of gritty, electropunk pop, alternately veering between the dark carnival-esque and the sublimely summery. Pleasantly disorienting electronic tones cascade and pulse as dense, propulsive beats build a solid foundation upon which Tao constructs immensely hooky and infectious choruses. Written and produced by Camu himself, King Of Hearts is the last vision of a criminally underrated talent in the midst of a major artistic breakthrough cut short before being fully completed.

Also prior to his death Camu Tao formed production crew and side project Central Services with longtime friend & collaborator El-P, whose long awaited 2004 debut EP Forever Frozen in Television Time has gone unreleased until now. In conjunction with the release of King of Hearts Definitive Jux will be issuing Central Services' EP as a free digital download.

Comment: like flipping an image of an musician/artist's persona like from sagging baggy cargo pants to skinny jeans over night. I guess it justifies artistic persona just by flipping your self/image youd be surprised. its quite a departure from the Fondlem days. Cage has done it, Louis logic has done it, Saul Williams has done it, you never know any of your favorite Underground Hip Hop Icons could be doin it too. personally the first of this kind of temporary artistic flipping ive witnessed was back when Ice T out of all motherfuckers did the Body Count(and he still managed to remain a hard O.G.) and then everybody on the Judgement Night Soundtrack which was quite a cross over to a different aesthetics, Afro Punk shit like Bad Brains or even Living Coulor or Fishbone...i definitely could see the transition which is still under the branches of alternative music. remember Underground Hip Hop is also a form of alternative music away from "Pop" music for better reasons of preserving artistic value and expression. even EDAN is even doing a rock record maybe psycadelic influenced. Rest In Peace Tero Smith June 26, 1977 May 25, 2008.

Comment: This was very different from what I expected... I guess Cage really found his inspiration for his new work from Camu. Either way it's musical, different...fresh. I was expecting mad rhymes but I'll bump this out of respect, regardless.

Comment: This is the most addicting album I've ever heard. Camu was trail blazing & some ppl are too close minded to understand. No it's not rap, it's odd, offbeat pop, which is where music is going these days. Haters always play their part.

Comment: This album is on point. I've been listening to it on my 1 hr commute to work and back along with Pilot Talk, Villa Manifesto and Life After God for like 3 weeks now. It's so different. It's refreshing. Different beats. creative ones. Sick lyrics. I like this album because underground hiphop isnt the only shit I listen too. I listen to good shit, I dont give a fuck what genre it is. Camu Tao, Bad Brains, The Monteclairs, Jay-z, Slayer and DOOM in one sitting. Broaden you horizons. you cant rate this as a underground hiphop record cause it isnt. It's somewhere else and thats a good thing.

Ind of the the way he speld joint...sounds like the shit quality of my first good songs...but a cool song in there. Get at You...catchy...I liked it. Fonny Valentine kinda ill...sick beat on Bird Flu. Unpolished but nicely grimy stuff. The Moment might buy far the best joint in there. Knowin his bedder known style was thinkin while listenin man why did def jux do this to him? Fuck he might have not wanted to ever put most of these songs out. Like a different dude. Cool to show another side to a human being musician tho. Not wut I expected. Comment: anyone giving this below five stars is a retard, anyone that mentions kanye and pharrell is a faggot retard, the dude died before he even got to finish this, this is like watching a movie where the director didn't get the final cut, it's a work in process, but unfourntaley this work can never be finished, for what this album has to offer though is amazing you get 2 c a whole new side to camu, this is his unfinished final farewell, ind of worl absolute banger, and you've never heard anything like that track the moment, haters suck a dick, support this legend

Comment: Rip Camu Tao. This album should be free to honor Camu-- not to profit off him. It's dangerous to release unfinished material. That being said, one can't approach this with a cookie cutter mind but an open one. He's attempting to blend genres, not simply limiting himself to an overly abused one.

Comment: If this is where Def Jux is headed... then don't bother releasing the Weathermen album. First Cage, now Camu (after death) grrrrrr. BTW, just because someone is dead, doesn't mean you have to like their stuff. If it even IS his stuff... cutting room floor scraps pasted together. Smurf that.

Comment: yooooo Jimmie ...enough said homie. you have broken down exactly what I been thinking this whole time. much respect. not too many artist , even in the commercial industry can do what camu tao has done. he has changed the fusion of rock , with hip hop. I totally miss all his work. what a talented MC, artist, and producer. such great memories where left on his days with eastern conference, MHz, Def jux, weatherman, central services, now this LP. god bless his soul. people stop talking shit already and respect the man who was dying on his death bed to deliver a album so unique , with tons of growth . peace.

Comment: Has anyone even mentioned the lyrics or listened to "entire" album more than once? Tons of hidden messages and just on point lyricism. How many MCs could make a transition to rock? ... small few. How many rock bands could make a transition to hiphop without sounding like ass? ...even fewer. Camu Tao does that shit seemlessly. Not a perfect album, but you sit a your home studio dying of cancer, start up garage band on your ibook and try to create 1% of what he did on this demo. Camu Tao would have killed a guest spot on Blackroc. Strong Arm Steady and Madlib and King of Hearts are my favorite albums of the year so far. We'll see about Black Milk.

Comment: i agree with scott and c hill. if kanye or pharell or andre 3000 made this album it be deemed "pure genius" but this album will be overlooked by many. and yes this album will be "stolen" by some top named producer just like andre 3000 took his wigs and name from kool keith & sir menelik(sinister 6000 & cyclops 4000 anyone?). not that much different from pharell(in my mind) and "hipsters" with colorful clothes and tight pants still jocked it! so whether you hate this or love this....respect to the camu!

Comment: I dont why you guys are hating so much this album was the best fucking thing I have heard in a long time. You cant compare this to his older work he was trying something new. You guys have to also take into account that most of this wasnt finished the album is composed mostly of demos. No telling what would had made the final cut. Like EL-P said Camu was ahead of his time.

Comment: Even though this might not be what you expect from Camu, a little bit more respect for the dead here is extremely in order. Again most people are hating. This is what artist wanted to make, not what the fans "wanted" hear or "expected". You guys are a disgrace for Hip Hop in general, with all this dickriding and hating. I have been listing to rap for around 22 years, people. So trust me, if I say I heard allot of shit in my lifetime. This album might not be your taste, or style. But pay the man respect for trying. And keep the hate away from an artform like Hip Hop, we already lost allot of great people because of hate. To get back at the album, there are some bangers on this disc right here, but hey, I loved funcrusher and the cold vein. Thank EL-P for putting this out there, so all the little kiddies can hate, and the real heads can pay proper respect. RIP Tero!!!!!!!!!

Comment: I wouldn't be surprised if people didnt start feeling this album til like 2012 or 2013. It's ahead of its time, like Bobby Digital's first solo album. I didn't feel that shit til like 2000 when it came out in 98'. Not everyone is going to like it, doesn't mean its bad. Give it a chance though. Death is a hot track. What's a shame is that if Andre 3 Stacks came out with this, everyone would love it.

Comment: I have respect for camu tao but i'm not feeling this album..R.I.P.. Camu Tao only worked on a few of these songs and producers from Def Jux kinda messed this album up by changing the style...Kind of disappointed.

Comment: To be honest, I prefer Central Services EP than Camu Tao album because of the music production from El-P is better executed, but nevertheless the whole album did shows the more in depth behind Camu Tao himself than the Def Jux crew and well...the vocal audio quality didn't justify, but still if you overlook from that technical flaw then you'll enjoy it.

Comment: fucking incredible album, R.I.P. MU TEEZY!!! dude was so ahead of his time, I remember multiple Def Jux shows he performed at where 95% of the whole crowd fronted on these next-level sounds that you're hearing on this album, showing him no love at all, you could literally hear a pin drop... and now they'll all dickride this cuz he's dead, fucking necrophiliac hipster swine... the world truly lost a genius when he passed, it's such a shame this masterpiece marks the end of his career and not a new beginning. now where's that Central Services release at???

Comment: yo rafael nadal, you talking about a person who has passed on and is considered a very ill producer and artist. how dare you disgust his name with names like lil wayne or dipset, thats a mainstream mafucka for ya. your talking about people that dont even put any effort into shit anymore and just fuck around and it becomes hits. camu tao r.i.p. was a dedicated mafucker you need to learn more about people before you comment pz
