    Summary

Dessa's most important hip-hop instruction happened in a parked car. Stef Alexander, aka P.O.S. pounded out a lunch table beat on the hood of his Festiva, shouting his direction through the passenger window, "Good, now try it again louder."

Now 28 years old, Dessa is a member of the Doomtree crew-Minneapolis' ascendant hip hop collective of rappers, producers, and DJs. The group of nine friends has earned a national reputation for the irrepressible live shows, propulsive production, intelligent lyrics, and their ferociously DIY aesthetic. As a member of Doomtree, her work has attracted a ferociously dedicated fan base, held the #1 spot with CMJ, and appeared on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. She has earned praise for her range as a thoughtful songwriter, a fierce emcee, and a singer with an expressive alto voice. A Badly Broken Code is Dessa's eagerly anticipated full-length album.

The varied sound palette of A Badly Broken Code is unified by Dessa's inimitable style as a lyricist. Tenderness, wit, and poetic sensibility define her songwriting and every track on her full length reaffirms her position as one of the most capable lyricists in underground hip hop.

Comment: I lover her style. I would that her voice to spit was a little different but I love her delivery. P.O.S. has always had it as far as I am concerned and adding another branch to the Collective is a beautiful thing. What a bud blossoms at the Rhymesayers camp. I am IN. There are only a few ladies in HipHop who are... who THEY are... not what they are asked or told to be for the fame of it. HipHop has a new love, and her name is Dessa Darling... I think I love you... All the way live, Baby. The production is vintage Doomtree style. The tracks that she had a hand in producing seem to be her babies. Like she nurtured them just so until they were cultivated to the perfection that she decided. THIS is what HipHop is and does. All these clowns who want to tell you about how and why this and that... and how the commersh artists are keeping up with the times... there are NO times. There is only HipHop and either you love it or you don't. She clearly does. COPPABLE ROCKABLE she.

Comment: No doubt that Dessa is the smartest, most-mature female MC out there, and these tracks are further proof. Even if a few of them could bang a little harder, the album is by turns heartbroken, clever, fierce, and damn sexy. Hells yeah.

Comment: Dessa has real talent. She's not just a girl as she puts it "with a nice chest and a pricelist". She can hold her own with most MCs on the planet. Doomtree as a collective is IMO the best hip hop group on the planet. Rhymesayers has always been king of MPLS but their releases have been steadily declining as of late. The only recent standout by RSE was the Toki Wright album A Different Mirror. Pave the way for the new kings of the underground Doomtree.

Comment: Cant wait for this release, Dessa is easily one of the best MC's out there, and, along with doomtree they form a formidable group. She can rap, she can sing the world is her oyster.....big ups Dessa and Doomtree!
