Summary

EMINEM releases Recovery just over a year after his last album, 2009's Relapse. Relapse put the cap on an impressive ten years of recorded output, and contributed to EMINEM being the biggest selling artist of 2000-2009. In recognition of this, Neilsen SoundScan named him their Artist of the Decade. Relapse entered the charts at #1 and, at nearly double platinum, was the best selling rap album of last year. It also earned EMINEM his 11th Grammy award, winning in the Best Rap Album category. Relapse's first single, "Crack A Bottle" from EMINEM, Dr. Dre and 50 Cent, soared to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Eminem's second #1 after 2002's "Lose Yourself") and set a SoundScan record at the time of its release for opening week download sales (418,000). The album also spun off two other hits; the Top 10 "We Made You" and Top 20 "Beautiful."

"I had originally planned for Relapse 2 to come out last year," remarked EMINEM. "But as I kept recording and working with new producers, the idea of a sequel to Relapse started to make less and less sense to me, and I wanted to make a completely new album. The music on Recovery came out very different from Relapse, and I think it deserves its own title."

EMINEM has sold more than 78,000,000 albums worldwide. After 1999's quadruple platinum The Slim Shady LP, The Marshall Mathers LP (2000) and The Eminem Show (2002) became two of the Top 5 best selling albums of the 2000s, with approximately 10,000,000 copies of each sold in the U.S. alone. 2004's Grammy-nominated Encore reached #1 and was certified quadruple platinum. The #1, double platinum, 2005 greatest hits collection Curtain Call: The Hits and #2, platinum, 2006 various artists compilation Eminem Presents: The Re-Up followed.

Comment: I've heard this album plenty of times, and only one out of the ten times I've heard it were by choice. Not a single listenable track or verse, beats are awful, he should of stuck with Dr. Dre for beats. The people who like this album are the people who listen to the radio, and guaranteed have not heard half of mmlp or sslp. I personally loved relapse and was stoked for relapse2. I still hope he drops that shit. But thats my 2cents not that anyone cares. relapse over recovery easily. He needs to drop relapse2 then dye his hair blonde take some pills drop eminem lp then overdose.

Comment: This was decent. The beats mostly rock (Cold Wind Blows), save for the occasional screwup. But Eminem sounds weak here. Dude sounds more like a whiny emo kid than a dude who's trying to recover; his lyrics & flow are still there, but they're not as good as they used to be (Marshall Mathers LP). It don't help much that he's doing songs with who he used to diss- pop stars. If Em simply focused on a shorter album with more personal & emotional material & flashes back to his old ways, this would be a great LP. Instead, it feels kinda emo while trying to pop-friendly.

Comment: ... how there are real junkies out there who know this ain't the type of promotion HipHop needs. I agree with Narcotic. Respected his style (whatever it was) but it was at a time when it seemed as though he respected himeself... now he's just another sell-out. He is who Justin Beibler or whatever the phuk his name is aspires be. Just a b!tch of an adult male masquerading as an artist.

Comment: D'Angelo Barksdale, we know that ain't EXACTLY true. I "have to hate this album" because it sucks. He may be atalented lyricist (somewhere) but DAMN sure NOT one the most skilled HipHop has ever had... I can count ten that are doper... and add my toes to to scream 10 more before Em is even a consideration. I AM WAY TOO OLD TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT HOW COOL I SEEM AND WAY TOO BIG A FAN TO LET GARBAGE LIKE THIS DICTATE MY TASTES. iT IS THE COMBO OF BEATS AND RHYMES THAT MAKES HIPHOP... end rant. This album is low status... level with dirt and white dog shit... not to say his color has shit to do with it Aesop would this Fruitcake for breakfast. Nowhere near four stars... unless they are floating over his head from the knockout he will receive from HipHop herself from the RAPE. Don't ever treat a lady like a ho.

Comment: Seems like these low ratings are from people who feel like they HAVE TO HATE THIS ALBUM because that's the cool thing to do. Sort of like booing John Cena ha, nobody really knows why but it's what everyone is doing. It's not great but it's pretty damn good and a thousand times better than that first album he came out with.

Comment: This isn't a bad album, jeez people. It's just not what Eminem can do. First off, the beats are half garbage, half sick. Khalil is a beast, check his Self Scientific stuff out. One Dre beat though?? That's part of Eminem's sound. 25 To Life is a quality track, and there's no denying he is one of the most skilled MCs hip hop has ever had, but please Em, no more crossover shit. A lot of these beats shoulda been FOR Lil Wayne or Drake, not their mate Marshall.

Comment: Buck-Nastee is just plain right... and when you’re right, you're right. I phukkin' HATE Pop Hop (yeahthatsright... chop it up... coin it... exploit it). This DICK is EXACTLY what is wrong with HipHop right now. The people who don't understand it, only use this to make attempts at gathering why they should hate it. Always hated this dude and never liked him. Ever. He has always been a phukkin' cartoon character to me. He is the new millennium Mickey Mouse. D.I.C....S.U.K.... b-i-t-c-h. What's that spell? Eminem. He sucks and his pop appeal is heavily over-weighted and HipHop needs to be lightened of this load... or he could just blow himself all over some guy’s tramp stamp. shit is GAMMA WACK on a phukkin stellar level. He just sux... he has never bumped banged or been played in my car but something tells me that some of you have been getting "banged" for a while and getting played into total belief that this phukkin clown sans make up is HipHop. I can't spit you 3 hot lines... because he sucks. Opinion stated, no need for verification. Thank you.

Comment: First and foremost, I'll start off sayin, BUCK-NASTEE, I respect your opinion of Eminem and this album... But I just so happen to be a guy who WILL give Lil' Wayne his props whenever it's due... (or ANY rapper for that matter...) Personally, I don't think Weezy himself is holdin' real Hip-Hop back AT ALL! He ain't the sickest rhymer ever, but considering Weezy's entire music career so far, through his step up on lyricism compared to when he was first introduced to the game... Honestly, he's got a good enough amount of material to rock a party for like a week straight!!! An exaggeration, yes, but seriously... If Weezy wanted to, he could perform at a whole new generation "Woodstock 2010" if he tried it... He'd be the "Jimi Hendrix" electrifying the crowd, and he would have that shit JUMPIN!!! Just being real. So would Eminem... If you think there should be only one kind of "traditional" Hip-Hop style used to move the crowd or get a club JUMPIN'... Then you would wholeheartedly disagree with me... Fine. If you think mainstream media outlets are inappropriately broadcasting Hip-Hop as a music that's ONLY about "sex, money, drugs, and violence" by neglecting to broadcast the songs and artists with more real substance because they're afraid the records won't sell up to THEIR standards... I will wholeheartedly AGREE WITH YOU! But no MC is perfect though. Little do people realize that Hip-Hop, in its original essence, has always been a reflection of American culture in general. And what is "American culture" without the John Wayne/Scarface "tough guy" mentality? Over here, the n*gga wit the gunz is dat n*gga you DON'T fuck wit it! What's "American culture" without money, materialism, promiscuity, and the pursuit of happiness i.e. "The Grind". If "The Grind" ain't workin for ya, you gotta grind harder until you get what you want... Or die tryin... That's the American way! So in the end, I say... fuck "mainstream" as well as fuck "underground"! Because TRUE Hip-Hop overall is startin' to shine through in the new decade of 2010, pleez believe! I'm signing out on that note...

Comment: I love how everyone's arguing why this album is getting low ratings. The main reason is b/c it doesn't belong here! UGHH - please stop putting things like this for sale! It's not underground and most of this guy's audience would never come to this site anyway if you're trying to cash in on sales(yes there are a few misguided souls here anyway). For real, Eminem is a talented dude, but his music hasn't appealed to me since he makes everything so pop-sounding. I have no respect to a dude that gives Lil Wayne props. He's just another rapper that's holding real hip-hop back.

EM should have stuck with that instead of turning bitch and pursuaded by a teenage audience that does not know anything about hip hop. Production is weak, some songs sound like a rock and roll album, get some premo or 9th on this bitch!!! Regardless of what I say this shit will sell because kids jock him still.

Comment: I don't listen to to much ish on the radio but the production on this album is ridiculous. DJ Khalil (of the New Royales & Self Scientific is the best in the game right now), Just Blaze, Dre, Boi 1da & Havoc?!!! This album is a BURNER!!! The haters can hate but the music speaks for itself. The Alchemist (ALC) djs for this cat, so...... nuff said.

Comment: Hey Boom3, race ain't an issue to me. In fact, I sympathize for the many immigrants who wish to come to America for better opportunities. I also sympathize for Hispanic people in Arizona who will be racially profiled if the new law goes into full effect. I sympathize for all the kids in Texas and the South where the history textbooks are being tampered with, changed, and altered in order to make them think more "conservative". Oh yeah, I am aware of that hypocritical BULLSHIT!!! But in the Hip-Hop world, a rapper's background DOES play a huge role. If you fakin on the mic, you ain't going nowhere as an artist. Mainstreamers might buy into it for a while, but eventually your fire will die out. Prime example, the rapper 50 Cent. This is a great comparison, because Eminem is nowhere as LAME as 50 Cent right now. Marshall Mathers has got the nuts and more "soul" to reflect REAL subject matter and substance going on with him RIGHT NOW... Now compare that to Curtis Jackson's piece-o-shit Before I Self Destruct album, where he continues to rap about some street cred that he barely had in the past over stolen beats and corny rhymes. I wasn't moved. Once again, congratulations to Eminem for such a successful release and by the way... All you cats worrying about whether this album is underground or mainstream instead of analyzing the actual music itself sound REAL SUSPECT...

Comment: Yo Megan Foxxx, I got ya back on this one... Hey Myth, Megan's post wasn't a "racist" comment, it was a "realist" comment! Even I could look at your post and LOCATION, and then "ussumed"... (spelled ASSUME, homie...) LOL And then make an assumption that you ain't listen to shit on this album JUST BECAUSE of the guest appearances. This is Em's best subject matter since probably The Eminem Show... Overall production is aight, I love Just Blaze's beats though. I'd say, The Myth, you might need to take a little advice from that "Not Afraid" track... One of the hottest bar deliveries by Eminem - "...I'ma be what I set out to be / Without a doubt, undoubtedly / And all those who look down on me, I'm tearing down ya balcony!!!"

Comment: There are a couple bangers on the album. I feel like the 3 stars I give it is due to that. Anybody giving it 1 star is just hatin pretty much. Anybody giving it 5 is pretty much smokin crack. If this album is a 5 what the hell is Slim Shady LP or Marshall Mathers LP?? 7?? 8?? Not great production throughout the whole album. Like I said a couple songs are pretty dope, but all in all not his best by a LONGSHOT. Em still got the flow though. Stop hatin to the 1 star people, and open your eyes to the 5 stars.

Comment: Too much rap pop BS on this album. He can still spit, but there's way too much focus on makin tracks danceable!! He need more production styles similar to Primo,Necro,Havoc,Da Beatminerz,..etc to compliment his lyrics. Definitely went the way of making $$, instead of making it for the love of rap. DISAPPOINTED

Comment: To all haters of "singing", BE AWARE that (by your definition of "singing") Eminem has "sung" on EVERY one of his albums... All the way back to The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP. So with that being said... This is not his greatest release, but it's definitely the REALEST album he's had in a while, at least since The Eminem Show. Despite some minor flawed production and soft drums, Eminem truly steps outside of himself and reflects some deep substance throughout this album. True Hip-Hop headz should STOP lookin for Christina Aguilera jokes and Ken Kaniff skits to giggle at. I can compare this album to when Ludacris dropped the Release Therapy album. Like that record, Eminem shows a whole new mature side of Marshall with songs like "Going Through Changes", "Talkin' 2 Myself", and "25 to Life". One of my favorite head-bangers is "No Love", an instant classic made with an elite lineup - Eminem, Lil' Wayne, Just BLAZE!, and a classic 80's sample. And you can hate Weezy all you want, but do be aware, despite any other lackluster verses by him... On THAT particular verse... Lil' Wayne rips it apart! Congratulations to Eminem for this release and also... ... um... ...I know I'm forgetting something... What was it? Damn... ... ...Oh yeah! It was... FREE WEEZY!!!

Comment: This is an awful album, I'm really curious if cats over 35 bump this at all...I'm cool with artists expanding and all but this is bad.....The beats are really bad...The funny thing is this will still go a million times platinum just because it's Em.... To be really I don't like any of his albums but this is really bad... Where is Em from 97-98....

Comment: mad hate over here for a guy that every single one of you were a fan of at some point in your lives, otherwise why waste time even checking for his latest material if you have no interest. respect the man for what he has already done if not for what he is doing now. not a fan of his later work either, but nothing is ever better than the original, music is no different now than todays movies, everything seems to have been done over repeatedly, and remains unmatched to its original art, and with hiphop slowly but surely going down the tubes, at least he is still here doing it unlike the greats before him. also, that last track is the shit.

Comment: This shit is wick wick whack. Seriously, the beats and chorus work are some of the worst I've heard in my life. And to have Wayne, Rihanna, and PINK as FEATS simply shows how much Em has fallen off. This shit is all for publicity and to attract some little white suburban girl to finally have a reason to buy an Em album. The only thing saving this album is Em's lyrical ability (though even that isn't too good)

Comment: Oh yeah, don't get me wrong.. I blame Eminem just as much as the people who support this shit. Because a real man who loves Hip Hop wouldn't sell out for something trivial like dollars, which is temporary by nature, cuz he knows that Hip Hop is FOREVER. The man is weak, he gets no respect for that. "Make the money, but don't let the money make you" - yeah most people are too weak to abide by that statement in this day & age it seems.

Comment: If Hip Hop worked the way it was supposed to then - In time this guy's record sales would have went DOWN(not UP!)thanks to his compromised style, dwindling lyrical ability, disappointed fans, etc.. In time he would have vanished into obscurity, hit rock bottom, sank into depression & all that & had some self reflecting...then eventually he'd be mad at himself for sellin out & compromising & sugarcoating his music-(turning into a RAPPER), then it could create the anger/hunger/passion to rise up again & he'd be back at square one, with the spark to re establish himself as a REAL EMCEE. Then we might be seeing the Eminem we all remember and once respected.. But thanks to all u brainwashed zombie consumerist fucks ya'll got him & others like him stuck in a cycle of creating mindless bullshit garbage ass music, simply cuz u keep supporting it..shit, he could probably just sing mother goose rhymes and you'd still support that's how feeble minded most of ya'll are. WHEN DOES IT STOP?

Comment: Lyrically it's solid, not outstanding, I think Relapse was better lyrically, but Recovery suffers from poor beats. The best track is 13 which is the only Dre beat actually. The rest sounds like Eminem trying to rap over Lil Wayne beats. Em it don't suit you. Not a bad album though like some are suggesting.

Comment: wow, after Encore and Relapse I never thought Em could make an ill album but of course hes shady. Recovery isn't anywhere near his early masterpieces but for mainstream music this is ill as it gets these days. There are only two songs I don't like and thats his single "Not Afraid" and "No Love" feat. Lil Wayne, besides the two everything is strong. I can't believe I am saying this but Recovery is my favorite album so far this year.

Comment: You know... I was scrollin through the new albums of June the other day and uh... I saw Em's joint and I was like, "Cool, hopefully it'll bump better than Relapse. Relapse was fairly ok, but it put me to sleep." So I check the tracklist and thought, "Hmmm... Well nothin really stands out, but I do LOVE that 'Not Afraid' track. Hopefully he'll bring some more content like that throughout the album and... Oh! Wait a minute! Uh oh... Weezy's on this album! Damn, he must've been PUTTIN IN WORK before he went to jail! All of those new releases he got!" So then, I thought to myself... "I bet there's a whole bunch of people on UGHH hating the album ALREADY simply because of Lil' Wayne. Let me go and see..." Sure enough, I typed in the URL, typed Eminem in the search, clicked Recovery, and sadly... I was right. I then thought to myself, "...lame." So I'm just hear to say... FREE WEEZY!!! and also... Let's go Em! Do ya thang, bruh! If you gon rock, rock HARD!!!

Comment: Okay, Em has twice as much money as these "real rappers" and he doesn't flaunt it or talk about it at all. He is signing Slaughterhouse so people in the game wanna make a deal with him. I listen to more underground than mainstream and new artists putting out club bangers or love songs wit Justin bieber are ruining hip hop. Hip Hop fans listen to more of an artists old shit than they're new shit, look at everything they put out. If you don't like his music that's fine but you have nothing to complain about.

Comment: Eminem has put out all he needs to be considered one of the best rappers of all time. Recovery is just more material to add to his resume'. The majority of Relapse was far from pop and the word play was ridiculous. I'm not saying the Em isn't capable of putting out whack shit(peep encore & refill.) Just that There are a lot more sellout artists that get hella features(snoop jay-z.)Don't rule him out yet.
