Summary

Second only to Large Professor's prophecy on Midnight Marauders; "Queens Represent, Buy The Album When I Drop It," no project in hip hop has been alluded to on wax and then so heavily coveted and discussed as Esoteric's new full length opus, Saving Seamus Ryan. The album originally labeled by Eso himself as "...coming soon" on his (with partner 7L) highly acclaimed A New Dope album is finally here and well worth the wait.

The full-length is an audio short story based on a bizarre dream that Esoteric had 4 years ago. As he describes it, "It was a crazy period in my life: I was engaged, in the process of finding a new home; the record business was going down the tubes, I was leaving a troubled past with a label to start my own one on a totally independent, self financed level...I had a lot of stress and reservations in my life. Celph and I had just built my Pterolab studio, I had started to really produce and was really getting into it, making a ton of beats and had a ton of ideas. I guess all that stress and those feelings just manifested."

Eso penned the particulars, culled two hard-drives worth of sound bytes from every Hip-Hop icon and childhood hero involved in the dream, and planned on setting it to a score...but it was just way too complex and it started to take on a life of it's own. Experimenting with Saving Seamus Ryan gave birth to his solo ventures Egoclapper, Esoteric Vs. Gary Numan, Pterodactyl Takes Tokyo and Serve Or Suffer. These albums marked the launch of his Fly Casual Creative imprint, all the while with a bigger presence looming in the background: the release of their parent project Saving Seamus Ryan.

The album is broken into twenty chapters rather than individual tracks and is presented in a beautiful hard bound case book that includes the full short story and liner notes written by Mr. Ryan - a whopping 52 pages. Vocal contributions come from the legendary and consummate hip hop theme-writer Masta Ace, long time collaborator Main Flow, and up and comers Blacastan, K-Flay and Qwill. The aforementioned colorful characters from Eso's childhood and subconscious also help along the journey (including a cameo by DJ Premier). Esoteric handles most of the production duties but is also backed by career long partner 7L and fellow East Coast Avenger DC the Midi Alien.

So the time is now; sit back, press play, crack the binding and follow along with one of hip hop's most gifted minds as he proudly presents the most intricate and personal work of his career.

Comment: Wow the amount of haters are lacking any sense. I know the music production isn't amazing, but it is still listenable and the lyrics are still the same Esoteric you know and love. I love this album and Esoteric is still one of the best member of AOTP.

Comment: Ive been seeing people on here post alot of 1 stars, I respect that if its not your stuff but don't go off saying everybody who likes this is an idiot there is no point for that, the point for the review part of these is to give your opinion not criticize others. For everybody who doesn't respect others opinion fuck you there is no point to be like that. and if you don't like this album I suggest you listen to it front to back, first song to last, the reason I say that is because this album is like a movie, IMO its very interesting and creative and that is why I gave this 5 stars, the beats could be better but you guys seriously need to give him credit for coming up with this creative idea

Comment: (on track 10)Did he actually say, "time to get nice like Pete"? Pete Nice was Copywrite's name before he actually realized that Pete Nelson, at least, doesn't sound like that sexual predator who shouldn't have ever made the cast of the Bozo Show.

Comment: i love all of eso's other solo releases, but on this one he sacrificed too much for the sake of the concept of the album. his lyrics aren't as strong, his beats aren't nearly as good, and some of the songs just aren't his style at all. but I find that all rap albums that try to make a story type of concept album (more in the vain of prince of thieves and I phantom than deltron 3030 or de la soul is dead) tend to sacrifice the technical qualities for the overall effort. don't get me wrong though, there are some great songs here; the concept is great, the guests are great, and the vocal samples are all entertaining. if you want to hear eso do what he does best (hard beats and rhymes), try egoclapper or esoteric vs. japan/gary numan, but if you want to hear an entertaining linear concept album, go for this one, and enjoy the ride.

Comment: wow. a beautiful piece of art. to all eso's fans: its worthy of all the buzz and hype. instead of just thinking up an album name ahead of time and sticking with it to put out some new music to early. eso dropped this album name early because it was his brain child every track was being crafted with precision for the four years we've been waiting. everything was deliberate. if youre a true hip hop head. become an unangry white #### and listen to this with open ears. its amazing he really went all out with this effort. you definitley have to read along with the book on your first or second listen. it really is a beautiful creation. if you truly listen you can feel the incredible work and deliberation behind every noise and niche in the album. a masterpiece from eso

Comment: I just bought it... man this dude has 3 tracks about his dog. He gets 1 star for bravery and audacity right there. I think it will grow on me the more I listen to it and will become a 5 star album, like Esoteric vs. Japan I don't know why people diss Eso or his fans for liking it. If you don't dig it just say you don't dig it. I don't like BBQ sauce, I like Ketchup, doesn't mean I'm a call everyone who eats BQ sauce a f@gg0t!

Comment: The album definitely grows on you after the first listen. Theres traces all over the album of that vintage esoteric style we've been missing. Tracks like the intro, Macko's Angel, Dope Beat, I Rap To Much, Ace's Cake, No Features, Take Me To The Bridge, Wrong Attitude, My Audition, and Fight are all bangers. I was one of the original posters bashing it but I was wrong. I just hope the next reunion album is back to old form.

Comment: esoterwakyall....uh....i totally agree man. I think kool g rap is the ultimate pioneer of hip hop. dumbass! I know my history you dumb fuck. im a damn hip hop historian man! Learn how to read man. my comment says he is A hip hop pioneer....not the hip hop pioneer. I think we can have more than one person who has been a pioneer is the game. Test my hip hop knowledge haha....yeah right bro. I guess I just know underground a little better and respect people in the underground world a lil bit more. you go ahead and jump on the band wagon and turn to radio shit and diss people who are tryin to do somethin from left field so people like us don't have ta listen to the shitty kid cudi, kanye west bullshit. come on man. you from NY. You should know better than ta diss our lil bubble of people that we have in the ughh world. disappointed atcha bro.

Comment: I thought being a tru underground hip-hop artist meant being original, expressing urself and not giving in to what the masses or "POP"ular crowd demands? Yall stupid idiots dissing ESO for being creative and taking chances with his music need to give him a fuckin break. Who the fuck put a gun to yalls head and forced you to buy/listen to the album anyDAMNway? People way too fuckin spoiled nowadays I tell you! This guy is an artist! How can you expect him to stay within the same creative limits that he had 10years ago? Artists evolve which is what all u hatin morons should do with ur thinking. Im glad ESO is helping the undaground evolve cause staleness is neva good! Those of u that are dissing I ask you this....have any of you ever, EVER tried to put a beat together? If u have it amazes me that you dont have more respect for what he does cause that shit is not that EZ unless ur naturally gifted but I doubt any of u unappreciative, spoiled rotten, whiny mofuckas are! Don't listen to the ignorance ESO...keep bringin the REAL! PeacE

Comment: Just listened to it from start to finish. Definitley a soundtrack. Harrison Ford is his imaginary friend, Guru picks him up in a cab, Camron tells him to fuck off). Everyone hated on Pauls Boutique when it came out. All your "underground" cookie cutter artists sound like Lord Finesse from 20 years ago! Underground is the new top 40 and originality scares dumb fuckers. Hey Bronxmudafxkter New York rap lost its crown to the D and Chi-town.

Comment: I agree fuckman, I used to love the grimy, gritty sound of 7L & Esoteric. Albums like, Soul Purpose, DC, DC2, and Moment of Rarities is the sound that they no longer have. They need to bring this back!! I miss this shit badly! I miss having Celph and Apathy on your albums!! Bring 7L back to the fore front again!

Comment: Man, I swear to God, if this shit sounds like all his other BS that has come out, Ima flip my lid. 7L NEEDS TO PRODUCE FOR HIM AGAIN! THAT'S WHEN THESE GUYS WERE ILL! I was hoping Esoteric's last few albums were just some experimental shit, I wasn't thinking this change was gonna be PERMANENT! Let's hope it wont be...It just scares me seeing that he produced pretty much all of it!
