Summary

After a five year break exploring new sounds and building their personal repertoires, the dynamic duo of Eyedea & Abilities return with the follow up to their 2004 critically acclaimed sophomore album E&A. With biting guitars, fuzzy keyboards, melodic choruses, and some of their most intricate turntable work to date, By The Throat cuts right to the vein and advances far beyond Eyedea & Abilities battle tested history (winners of HBO Blaze Battle, Rocksteady, Scribble Jam and the DMC's).

Throughout the nineties the duo played an important role in the development of the emerging underground Hip Hop scene alongside friends Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, EL-P, the Living Legends, Sage Francis, Blueprint and more. Always pushing the boundaries, Eyedea & Abilities have not only grown but have elevated their talents and once again successfully brought them together with By The Throat.

Comment: This album really shows the progression of song writing skills of Eyedea. The sound is different than their previous albums but it sounds more like a natural progression. It's a shame I found out about him too late. ReyeP

Comment: lol Reading through some of these ratings it just goes to show how different our ears are. I gave it two because thats what I thought of this album and yes the older stuff sounds better to me, but no point in knocking this album because its not like the others. Peace

Comment: If you're a fan of Eyedea & Abilities, get the album... it's amazing. Nothing else to say. Those who are upset that it doesn't sound like E&A... let me ask you this? Did E&A sound like First Born? Did either of those two albums sound like Oliver Hart? Did any of those three albums sound like Eyedea's two bands? Furthermore... did those two bands sound ANYTHING alike, in any way? The answer is negative. Yes, this album sounds different than anything else they have done(separate or together)to date. However, ALL of their work sounds entirely different from each other. That's the beauty of Eyedea & Abilities... they are still growing, doing there own thing and breaking barriers along the way. I give this album a 6/5.

Comment: WOW!! 2 stars for a rock albuum. Very disappointed with this album! Eyedea has gone crazy, too many drugs man. Wish he was still battling fools and ripping them to shreads like old times. Now, he is just concerned about sounding like a rocker and that isn't HIP HIP. Hate to say it but 2 stars for only 2 good tracks on CD. Wouldn't recommend this E & A album but any other album they came out with is a MUST have!!!

Comment: I must say I have been waiting for new work and after all the wait; it has certainly been worth it. they have helped hip-hop grow by going outside the box with this one for sure! the lack of creativity is what mainstream hip hop is lacking!!! to the young crowd, soak this in

Comment: If your the sort of person who gives a fuck about whether this rap or rock or anything inbetween, chances are your too narrow minded to appreciate this release, so save everyone the time and don't bother with it. As for anyone else, you'll probably enjoy this release just fine without my input.

Comment: I just opened the CD and listened to it once all the way through so my total opinion hasn't sunk in yet, but as of now I know that this album is going to be in heavy rotation in my house for a while. It was not what I expected, and I do wish it had more than 11 songs. The song "Burn Fetish" is the only one I checked out before I got the album and that song sounds like textbook E&A. That set me up for a big surprise because this album is almost entirely different than anything else they have put out, it's very indie rock influenced and although the old E&A shines through it is obvious that they're no longer in their infancy as a group.

Comment: Overall a good album. It is what you should expect from Eyedea....Unexpected! Overall it is kind of like First Born mixed with Carbon Carousel. The only negative thing I can say is that it leaves you wanting more. 11 songs, some of which are short, is not enought after the long hiatus.

Comment: Wow! Rich full sounds with abstract straight poetry ... its genius, and genius isn't for masses, if any glitch appears, its in the chorus' and different vocal tempo's, can be tricky for a tempo-mood cohesiveness, but is that the genius showing its genius

Comment: An excellent mix of rap and rock, much more genuine and successful than Cage's recent effort, which struggles a bit and sounds too 80's. 1 - Hay Fever - Doesn't rhyme, but works well as an intro and has good moments and a nice instrumental behind it. 4/5 2 - Spin Cycle - A better song to give you a feeling of what you'll be getting with this album. Eyedea's voice sounds the same as always, as he rapidly rhymes over a thumping, triumphant-sounding instrumental from Abilities. This goes into a memorable but not candy hook, making a great song all-in-all. 5/5 3 - Time Flies When You Have A Gun - The song starts off with another excellent rock instrumental from Abilities, which goes into Eyedea telling a story about a man who purchases a gun and the impact it has on his life. 4.5/5 4 - Burn Fetish - The best song on the album. A quick, emotional instrumental licks and rolls behind Eyedea's excellent lyrics (some of the best of his career) which show both great wordplay and lyricism, as well as excellent rhyme structure. Once again, a well-done hook adds to the song. 5/5 5 - Sky Diver - A soft, almost depressing instrumental rolls in while Eyedea places emotional lyrics on top of it. 4/5 6 - Junk - One of the angrier tracks on the album, this is another track made by a superb instrumental. Eyedea drops good verses, but on this song the hook drags it down. 3.5/5 7 - Forgive Me For My Synapses - A short, interlude type of song. The beat on this one is only decent, and it's tough to soak in all that Eyedea is saying. 3/5 8 - This Story - This song is a serious bonceback from the previous one. A ringing, catchy instrumental once again saves the day, with Eyedea speaking of the current state of society. He catches fire at certain points during this track, and makes it one worth playing numerous times. Each time Abilities alters the instrumental a small bit, Eyedea seems determined to come even harder. 5/5 9 - Factory - The most metal influenced track on the LP, with an especially whiny hook. However, the mellowed out verse-instrumental, combined with Eyedea's lyrics, makes this track something worth listening to. 4/5 10 - Smile - One of the best tracks on the CD. A calming beat, seeming optimistic, with excellent lyrics from Eyedea once again. 5/5 11 - By The Throat - The title -and final - track is less than 3 minutes, but is still excellent, with Eyedea dropping epic lyrics over a beat that matches his mood. Yet another banger. 4.5/5 Total - 4.5/5 - This album is definitely a banger. Not a full return to form, but certainly worth listening to for fans of the duo or anybody willing to tolerate a rap-rock combination album.

Comment: I heard 5 of the 11 songs on here and I liked most of them this album is extremely different that the other ones he did, well if you know a little bit about eyedea you know that all his albulms are different, this one got them beat by a longshot.... 1. Skydiver, This was the first song I heard on this albulm, I fell in love with it when I heard it, its basicly about being free, good song, fast rapping, good song 4/5 2. This story, 2nd song I heard on this albulm and I instantly loved the song, it reminds me of techno with rap lyrics the song is about politics and war 4/5 3. Burn fetish, This is probally going to be my favorite song on here, I think the song is about loving a woman or something I am not sure. Dope is the simple way to put it. 5/5 4. Spin Cycle, More of a rock song than a rap song, kind of reminds me of some 80's-90's rock song decent song not to fond of of, raps a little bit, song is about highschool freinds and meeting them. 3/5 5. Smile, this song is...I can't describe it. Breathless, Beutifull, Harmony...song about the bad things in the world and trying to not let it get you down. best song on here in my opinion. 6/5

Comment: hey j dub what the fuck's wrong with being a midwest white kid? us midwest white kids like eyedea lyrics because we're not fucking retards who didn't make it past the eighth grade, we like intellectual, poetic lyrics because we're smart enough to understand them. And I already have this record and I can tell you it's one of the dopest Cds I've heard in a while.

Comment: Eyedea and Abilities are consistently one of the best mc/dj duos on the planet. Personally Eyedea is my favorite rapper ever bc of his eclectic style and poetic lyrics. Some cant understand his style or dislike his voice but he is an incredible lyricist. Cannot wait for this one and if its anything like E&A then cot dammit they done it one mo' gain.

Comment: Eyedea is f#ckin wack, Abilities should use his production elsewhere. No offense, but you must have to be a midwestern white kid to get into Eyedea's rhymes because I sure as sh*t don't get his style.
