Summary

It's hard to believe that it's been almost two decades since Blackalicious and Gift of Gab burst onto the underground hip hop scene. Across three Blackalicious albums, two solo records and collaborations on Mighty Underdogs and Quannum Projects, Gab has been a constant source of innovation and inspiration. The Next Logical Progression is exactly what the title says. This time Gab decided to link up with musician/producer G Koop, a man adept at turning samples into original sounds played fresh on live instruments. And for the first time on this album Gab had a direct role in crafting the beats. As he describes it, "I would take a recorder around and hum bass lines, piano figures and guitar riffs into it, then I'd go over to Koop's crib and say, 'Play this.' I've always heard music in my head, but I never knew how to get it out. I finally got to express that."

Comment: Gift Of Gab is great, but the beats on this album are terrible. just terrible. by the time I got to "protocol" I was like "what the fuck? is this Sheryl Crow?" all the beats on this album were either wack or boring. i'll admit, I like the song "Wack But Good People" because i've been there before. well i'm not famous, but you know you have that friend who you go way back with and you find out he's a rapper but he's wack. so I could kind of relate to that song, hahaha. and I also liked "So So Much" and "Beyond Logic". other than that, this album just wasn't for me. even Canibus has a better ear for beats than this dude.

Comment: Dope. It gets a nod for album of the year in my camp. He brings in a lot of enlightening concepts into the mix, as he always has but a little more directly. The insight that Gab has to offer is one from someone who has searched his soul in and out and what more can you ask from a musician? This album complements the changing of seasons.
