    Summary

How many times have you heard someone complain that contemporary rap music lacks its modern day Public Enemy equivalent? You've probably said it yourself. We all have. But we need to stop. Yeah, Public Enemy is inviolate and irreplaceable, but Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music is the closest we're going to get to an ideal soundtrack for a Do the Right Thing remake.

It's no surprise that the beats come from Brooklyn, courtesy of El-P, a hip hop artist, producer and entrepreneur who is the borough's resident laureate of urban apocalypse. Snares crash like abandoned buildings being blown up. Synthesizers ooze with a diseased glow of something dying in a toxic water supply. The effect is like a futuristic junkyard come to life. In the midst of the decay of post-industrial New York, Killer Mike, hip-hop inferno, pours fuel on the already inflamed.

Nearly a decade deep in the rap game, Mike has released five critically hailed records and won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group with Outkast for the song "The Whole World." But, in no uncertain terms, Mike will tell you that R.A.P. Music is his finest accomplishment. He'll even call it a "classic." Of course, every rapper calls every one of their albums a classic. The only difference is that Mike's right.

Comment: Just because it slaps doesn't mean it's good. I'm a fan of both artists too. Mostly just EL-P's Fantastic Damage. I want that amazing hip hop sound. Not robotic music and loud raps.

Comment: I don't think I ever could have imagined Killer Mike and El-P working together, even more amazing is how natural they sound as a duo. As a fan of Co-Flow, I'd never guessed that El-P's grime could sound so perfect under a southern accent. The opener, Big Beast featuring Bun B and T.I., is a banger that nobody with ears and rhythm could possibly sit still through. Track 2 is such a beast, they didn't even have to bother naming it. "Untitled" features some percussion that gets me every time, probably my favorite instrumental on the whole album. On "JoJo's Chillin'" Mike shows off his storytelling stills. This takes you into the most controversial cut, "Reagan", Mike is channeling the spirit of Early Ice Cube and Public Enemy on this political rant calling out the Black Community, Hip Hop, the U.S. and even pointing out that Obama is no different than the Gipper himself. Mike keeps the political theme going to the next track, "Don't Die", one of the best anti-Corrupt-police songs I've heard in a while, in it Mike reveals that his father was a cop. El-P shows his mic skills on the track "Butane". The album ends with a couple of Mike's most personal statements, "Willie Burke Sherwood" and the title cut, Mike does something here that many MCs are afraid to do, get very personal. "Willie Burke Sherwood" talks about Mike's childhood and come-up in the rap game and the song dedicating itself to relatives who he wishes could see him now. On "R.A.P. Music", R.A.P. stands for Rebellious African People, Mike points out that his only religious experiences have come through rap music and hip hop is his religion. Me too Mike, maybe that's why I can relate to this album so well.

Comment: THANK YOU Killer MIke for chilling EL P out so he could make some beats that bang. I personally think elp production on his own releases are too out there and corny. But, Elp nails this album. Killer Mike lyrically is at his best. THe album is great!

Comment: This will be the first ATL hip-hop LP that I embrace whole-heartedly. This is the first one that MAKES me get it. That is an accomplishment. Yes, I can be closed-minded. But the fact that this album is the one that opened it up says something. Very nice work.

ALLLLL the Killer Mike I heard is mediocre at best but the claim was made about regional desire for HipHop. Sorry. Heyyyyy... 303... are YOU Killer Mike??? Again if it is hot, I will eat my words. If it is not then I will carry on in anonimity spewing my opinion whithersoever I pleases. I hope it is dope. Comment: I've heard the album of it's entirely. and i've got to say it was one of the most illest shit that i've heard. Killer Mike's lyrical delivery is on point.

Comment: This is hands down the best album I've heard in years. Mike's delivery is a perfect fit for type of s#!t El-p is on. This is another classic and another notch in El-p's belt. Mike came hard on this, and no he's not "gangster rap". This dude is intelligent and this album is nothing but... If you haven't heard it, don't speak, cause you're just gonna feel stupid when you do.

Comment: Producto's beat work is landmarking. His lyrics if you can wrap your head around them are complex and witty. I lOVE this dude's style & flow. Killer Mike though; and again... I will always say that there is a regional thing with me... but I don't really feel this dude lyrically. I find them an odd fit for what it is on the surface. And why in blazes "El-P of Company Flow" and not "El-P the Superstar Pioneer of the Definitive Jux label & sound". Something is going on... somthing reallll bad. Killer Mike is still kinda gangta rap. Ain't that done????

Comment: This album is sure to be a classic. Killer Mike is fierce on the mic and ally with a heavy sound produced from the creative mind and keen EL - P. The recipe is ready to attack sound! This album will surely enter the restricted my collection of albums that really should be taken for life and to leave them behind for my future heirs....
