Summary

An original member of New York's new-school pioneers the Ultramagnetic MCs, Keith Thornton is best known as a solo rapper. His signature styles stream-of-consciousness lyrical flow and complex vocals, two skills that earn him a perennial nod from the underground hip-hop community. The average Kool Keith album is peppered with bizarre, disjointed, even delusional or disassociated themes, concepts, and references. Nearly all of his albums incorporate a satirical dislike for more commercialized strains of hip-hop, as well as major record label scams.

After single-handedly redefining "warped" as the mind and mouth behind the Bronx-based Ultramagnetic MC's, "Kool" Keith Thornton -- aka Rhythm X, aka Dr. Octagon, aka Dr. Dooom, aka Mr. Gerbik -- headed for the outer reaches of the stratosphere with a variety of solo projects. A onetime psychiatric patient at Bellevue, Keith's lyrical thematics remained as free-flowing here as they ever were with the N.Y. trio, connecting up complex meters with fierce, layers-deep metaphors and veiled criticisms of those who "water down the sound that comes from the ghetto." His own debut single, "Earth People" by Dr. Octagon, was quietly released in late 1995 on the San Francisco-based Bulk Recordings, and the track spread like wildfire through the hip-hop underground, as did the subsequent self-titled full-length released the following year.

Since then, Kool Keith has dropped numerous critically acclaimed and lyrically genius records. Tashan Dorrsett, another concept- driven release from Keith, was released in 2009. Following early 2011 is the "Legend Of Tashan Dorrsett" remix album including remixes and exclusives by Hip-Hop legends Marley Marl, Domingo, Ultrmagnetic's TR Love, Agallah Don Bishop to name a few. Early 2012, Keith released the single "Anorexic" (labeled as a Ultramagnetic track) and flooded the internet with the hit records New York and The Game Is Free.

Keith's main event for 2012 will be the release of his highly anticipated new solo album Love & Danger produced by Dj Junkaz Lou and featuring Def Squad brainiac MC Keith Murray, and NYC's groundbreaking combo Megabone .

Comment: I love this album for what it is. I understand that you want a more powerful delivery like the lost in space album, but there is a time for everything. Maybe the next album will be more excited flows. I love this album, but I agree we need a hype, dope, emcee crushing album soooooooon!

Comment: Really disappointed in this. Was expecting it to be a lot better coming from Kool Keith. The intro is great. You get amped like this is gonna be humongous and the first couple tracks don't completely disappoint but then it just falls off. Ends with a good track in Goodbye Rap and that's that. Don't say this album is good just cause he's Kool Keith. Listen to it and make a judgement for THIS album. Still love Keith but this album is definitely one of his worst.

Comment: Agree w/monster chick Keith is always innovating. he doesn't need those lazy boombap beats by kutmastakurt anymore ('ppl' dissin' Keith's new beats on here might be kut himself ROFL dude looks like he's sensitive and stuck behind his computer wishing keith will call him and help relaunch his 'career') if you wanna hear keith over some classic boombap I say he needs Premier or Peter Rock. Real recognize real.

Comment: Man oh man....where to begin. Another uninspiring performance by Keith. The wack beats didn't help much either. I like Keith, I'm just not digging this release at all. It sounds very lazy. Production was bunk as well. Sorry, gave it a shot.

Comment: Last Keith album was TERRIBLE... N judging from the Youtube clip here he hasn't gotten any better... the drugs have caught up to him. Keith (although he WAS exceptionally dope and i've seen him twice already) has officially lost the plot... and if anyone begs to differ, watch his filmclip 'Bushman'

Comment: Although, I haven't heard this record yet, the Personal Album is dope (outside of the singing style he does), but lyrically to me he starting to sound lazy or dated not really expanding his lyric substance with age. Sounds to free stylish and unprepared sounding. Seems to be A big problem with veteran rapers once their audience base expands outside the underground.

Comment: I love Kool Keith, between the mid 90s to 2001 he was a beast with a flow that would give jay z a run for his money. Then he started the self indulgent period which ended with diesel truckers. Then he was very accessible but with multiple releases per year and a slowed down southern flow he became diluted. I know he can rap with umph, just check out the 3rd verse from celestial of mr. nogatco or some of his verses on dr dooom 2. I wish he would go out with something a little bigger and go back to his rapid fire elastic flow on his final album.
