Product Details

Following the success of two collaborative releases (EMC "The Show"/2008 and Ace & Edo G "Arts & Entertainment" /2009), Masta Ace joins forces with the metal faced MF Doom for Son of Yvonne, a highly personal concept album that celebrates the life and legacy of Ace's recently departed Mother. Like his 2004 landmark Disposable Arts, Son of Yvonne is meticulously constructed with stories, settings, and characters that resonate with flesh and bone humanity. Interstitial vignettes provide a thematic backbone to the experience, and each track complements and completes the previous to form a narrative whole: a sometimes visceral, sometimes nostalgic slice of Ace's young life in Brownsville, Brooklyn.

Entirely underscored by MF Doom's iconic Special Herbs instrumentals, Son of Yvonne features the Juice Crew general Big Daddy Kane, new comers Pav Bundy (The Bundies), Reggie B and even MF Doom on the mic. It's Masta Ace's no frills flow, however, that looms largest above the dusty samples and digger loops that define Doom's production. Ace's photo-realistic rhymes about stick-up kids, spraycan artists and wack emcees add extra gravity to his already celebrated reputation as "truly an under-appreciated rap veteran and underground luminary" (Allmusic Guide). Like Eminem recalls in his 2008 autobiography The Way I Am, "Masta Ace had amazing storytelling skills. His thoughts were so vivid."

Comment: While its true that these are recycled MF Doom beats, and yes Ace raps over them, and could try something new, I disagree totally, that it is bad. It is so, beautiful. Dooms beats are impeccable, and Ace is a graphic storyteller. Using wonderful jazzy basslines, with Ace's baritone voice, reflects his upbringing, and his love for his mother. This is the album for me this year. Classic Ace.

Comment: Another decent effort from the man himself with a collection of nice tracks, with the exception of Home sweet home where Pav Bundy completely ruined this track. However am really looking for a proper Ace solo effort as its been a while now!!!

Comment: Everybody here who keeps complaining about this album because of the beats needs to quite. First off this isn't about the beats really, even though the ones Ace decides to rhyme over are soulful, it's about Masta Ace's tight flow and vivid story telling skills. With every song you feel as though you are there on the block, in the room, or where ever Ace makes you feel like your at. Over all this thing is thorough even though he spits over some familiar beats.Just cuz everybody is raggin' on Doom nowadays don't take it out on a Hip Hop veteran who brings it %100 on every album.

Comment: You can't complain about the beats, because MA said what this LP was at least a year ago. If you don't like the beats, that's cool, your entitled to that, but don't get mad that you've heard the beats before, because no kidding, that's what dude said he was doing. In my opinion, this is a dope LP with nice beats and anything Ace does is great. And, DOOM didn't phone it in, or get lazy, because he didn't really work on the LP, Ace picked through "old" DOOM beats (with DOOM's blessing) to rap over. Makes for a great concept LP.

Comment: Instant illegal download due to recycled beats. Ain't no way I'm payingfor beats I already heard when I BOUGHT the Special Herbs series. I'll support Ace when he does a live show instead but fuck a MF Doom for pushing the same beats over and over again

Comment: This is an amazing collaborative effort. I don't understand what you hip hop gremlins are pissed off about. Ace worked hard on this and it turned out amazing. Yeah the beats have been around for a while but who gives a fuck, There is nobody else(even Doom) who does a better job over these beats. It's like he was ment to write to them, the concept is very amazing to. Who else dedicates a whole album to his mother over samples that may very well have been on records that his mother collected. 5/5 no doubt about it.

Comment: i find it a complete waste that ace decided to record new solo recordings over old beats. the same people checking for this album have already heard all these beats over and over. make it a mixtape and give it out for free. unfortunately it seems a lot of our old favorites are really out of touch. I never expected ace to drop another solo project so hearing him use beats I've already heard was very disappointing. please record another incredible story album like disposable arts, and a long hot summer ace. if he's got it in him to make all new material over old beats he's got another incredible album in him.

Comment: as a die hard doom fan, I cannot accept other people rapping on these classic beats. i'm really sorry. the originals are too ingrained in my head. I am surprised by this release. I do pay respect to mast ace and doom to do whatever they like. but masta ace in the interview is talking about what's fresh and hot and trying to keep with that, but he's rapping over someone else's heavily recycled beats from many years ago. seems at odds with that statement.

Comment: mf doom is dead. true super villain. why else would all this shit be recycled if he was actually alive there would be new shit coming out. he has everyone convinced he's still alive. does this make sense to anyone why else would his shit be repeated over and over and over and over and over and over if he was still around? just a stupid conspiracy theory but who else has speculation? mf doom is dead and still has people convinced he's alive. this is not bullshit a true supervillan would have everyone believing.

Cool that Ace hand selected, but for fans of the underground, and dare I say DOOM, we have heard these already and I cannot "un-hear" DOOM. Still ain't coppin' it.

Comment: OK...LARS has heard this album. And guess what? It is D.O.P.E.!!!!!! It is old Doom tracks with Masta Ace doing a concept album dedicated to his mother sort of like his Long Hot Summer with skits etc. He has many guest shots on the album including Big daddy Kane, DJ Red Alert and Doom himself. So this is an actual original album, not some mixtape or BS. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars. It is a must have for Masta Ace or any east coat golden age fan. LARS HAS SPOKEN...NOW BUY IT WHEN IT DROPS...

Comment: Will NOT be copping this. Funny... love DOOM... love the dude. Ace I will take but I hear these beats and all I hear is DOOM. I remember where he caught fire on each one. Disappointment. pro-DUCE. Not recycle. Getting over it real fast.

Comment: All who commented on the cover are not true UGHH heads. Your comments hold no substance and you're basically bored. It's a loosing battle to to hate on this individual's creativity when his catalog speaks for itself. And who cares if we heard these Doom beats, they sound hotter now. Entertain yourselves with some r&b covers and let the man live! Keep dis shit going MA...

Comment: Can't wait for this. Ace is one of my all-time favorites. I know this joint is gonna be more classic material. I think the artwork is cool.. reminds me of some throwback vinyl art, just with MA's usual logo. Not bad. I'm hyped for this release.

Comment: This should be a classic album, the combo should create some classic cuts to be played well into the future! As far as the comments on the art, I think it is creative. It's nice that someone took the time & came up with this somewhat unusual design so our brains can work a little. I have seen far worst, such as Kanye's cover! I will let the content of the album do the talking and the cover will protect it!

Comment: It's about time! I have been waiting for over a year for this ish to drop! just heard a song off the album and it got me super amped! The cover is super unique (abstract) unlike any hip hop album cover i've ever seen. Sorta looks vintage with a sheen to it. lol just drop the damn album already! sheesh!

Comment: It is the head of the mother and her two arms cradling her child. Its pronounced abstract. I get it though. I, me, personally am paying for the music. Actually that's all I care about and will deposit the jacket in a filing cabinet with all the rest after I read the thanks. I haven't hung a poster on my wall since TROOP rocked Mamacita. Yeah like THAT!!! Anyway simplicity obviously reigns and art and beauty and beholder's eye blah blah blah... Just turn on the music.

Comment: Mother and her child? It looks like two fuckin eggs and two waxing crescents laid on top of a Cosby Sweater. The point is the music sure, but if I'm paying $15 bucks give me some ART not a three year old's art project that a parent would be embarrassed to display on the fridge!

Comment: Here's the deal... Any graphic effect intended to sell is supposed to be triangular and draw vision from one point to the next. Am I right? (I don't really care). The point is the graphic is not that bad. It is a mother cradling her child... but you can all see that right? Well done. Now the POINT is the music, if it is all new DOOM material and not just tracks from ANY of the Special Herbs series then I am back to applauding DOOM and as long as Masta Ace stays off the "Me & the Biz" tip we may have a winner. M.A. ain't the greatest lyracist but he is a vet. DOOM? WHOA!!! In any event, I wait patiently with hopes that DOOM is back on the boards and crushing breaks to press masterpieces. Tick tock tick tock...
