| C-Rayz & Sharkey Form Monster Maker | 10/31/06 |
| | By: Trees Everyone has a breaking point. This is the general idea behind the Sharkey and C-Rayz Walz collaboration album Monster Maker. Sharkey breaks down the concept further: "I feel like the world is the monster maker and I feel like everyone, no matter how good of a family you've been raised by, or how good of a person you are, is capable of being that person that is sitting in the middle of bumper to bumper traffic for an hour one day and on the verge of going out and blasting people. Everyone has those moments where they feel like they can cross the line, everyone has that seed in them where they're capable of doing something monster shit."
After completing Monster Maker, Walz unequivocally feels that Sharkey is "the best I've ever worked with. Sharkey's [influences] are everything," Walz explains, "they're rock, they're synth, they're techno, they're Hip-Hop…they're everything…he made a monster and now he's here to bite everybody's fuckin' head off man."
Look for the Monster Maker CD to drop early 2007, and if you're at CMJ this week in NYC be sure to check out some of Monster Maker's scheduled performances.

| Jay-Z Airs Out Jim Jones In Hot 97 Interview | 10/31/06 |
| | By: Trees While promoting his new LP, Kingdom Come the Jiggaman, Jay-Z commented on his feelings towards Jim Jone's "Kingdom Done" diss track which has been circulating the mixtape circuits. The Brooklyn born rapper simply shrugged off the diss as a publicity stunt. Here is what the rapper had to say: "You don't get to where I got without developing thick skin. You have to because you look at the people that are saying things about you and you need to evaluate. We need like a hip-hop board, like to approve certain things. Who is Jim Jones? You know, to be saying something about me? if we're looking at it as far as career accomplishments or we looking at it as far as lyrical skill…like who is? I mean that's like the 9th man off the bench sitting there shoutin' ‘you a bum' to the superstar on court puttin' up 50 every night". The rapper further extolled on the perceived lameness of the situation. "I'm like, what has he done? What has he done to warrant that? Does he have a classic album? No. Is he on anybody's top 10 list? No. Does he have any hardware on his wall? No. So who is that guy to say anything about me?" | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| The HeadTurners Involved In Horrific Car Accident | 10/26/06 |
| | By: Trees For those that were lucky enough to catch the opening leg of Akrobatik's Absolute Preview Tour you were treated to an opening act performance from one of Boston's hardest working up and coming hip hop groups, The HeadTurners. This past weekend while the crew was driving out to San Diego to finish their new LP, they were involved in a terrible and tragic car accident in Utah. Involved in the accident were members Max Powers & Black El, and a business associate. Black El took the worst of the accident, suffering several broken bones and a punctured lung. He was airlifted from the scene and remains in serious condition in a Utah hospital. Max Powers broke several vertebrae and his ankle and was also ejected from the vehicle. Unfortunately, neither of the members of HeadTurners have health insurance so donations are being accepted via PayPal. If you know the HeadTurners or want to make a contribution please email your PayPal contributions to: helpHTnow@yahoo.com. Thanks in advance. | Evidence Talks New Album/ Robbery | 10/25/06 |
| | By: Trees No, Evidence isn't teaming up with Cage and company any time soon (at least that we know of), but the Dilated Peoples MC is hard at work on his latest solo offering in the form of The Weatherman. Several cuts from the album have already been completed and Evidence is preparing for the release of his new single featuring a song he claims to be one of the greatest of his career, "Mr. Slow Flow". While the album is slated for an early 2007 release, Evidence is currently focusing some of his energy on a European tour. Unfortunately for the Cali wordsmith, his tour van was robbed of several important and sentimental items during a stop in Prague including the NBA logo jacket he was wearing for the 20/20 photo shoot and the book he was reading on the trip. The MC is offering a reward for it's return so if you're in Prague and see someone reading "The Lincoln Lawyer" wearing a dope jacket, go grab that sucka! | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| Fabo's Shooter Caught On Tape | 10/20/06 |
| | By: Trees What is it about these Boston Celtics dudes and rap violence? Several years after Paul Pierce was stabbed in an altercation with Benzino's camp after a Ruff Ryders/Ca$hMoney show in Boston, one of the C's newest acquisitions Sebastian Telfair is allegedly involved and responsible for being the button-pusher in the 10/17/06 shooting of Fabolous.
From video taped evidence, and eyewitness accounts outside of Justin's, Diddy's swanky restaurant in NY, two members of the F-A-B-O's entourage were seen snatching the $50,000 chain off the neck of Telfair. Several minutes after the robbery, video footage showed Telfair placing a telephone call on his cell phone. It is also known that Telfair reported the robbery to restaurant staff but refused to alert authorities. Roughly 20 minutes after the call was placed footage showed a gunman unloading 10 rounds of ammunition in the direction of Fabolous and his crew as they were leaving the restaurant. The rapper was struck in the thigh.
Telfair's lawyer, speaking on behalf of his client, has denied the ballplayer had anything to do with the shooting that took place. Of course Boston's notorious sports-talk stations have already convicted Telfair of being involved in the crime.

| Slaine Hosts Historic La Coka Nostra Show In Boston | 10/16/06 |
| | By: Trees At The Middle East Thursday night, hip-hop fans who came for Southie rap star Slaine and Brooklyn underground vet ILL Bill also got a shocking visit from House of Pain ring leader Everlast. The Everlast on stage in Cambridge wasn't the same dude who sang blues and picked acoustic guitars under the alter ego Whitey Ford. He was the pub crawling, rhyme hurling rogue who 15 years ago bulldozed the wall between white rap and hardcore hip-hop. Rumors predicting the uncommon cameo first came in September, after Everlast joined members of his new crew – La Coka Nostra – on stage in L.A. to perform House of Pain's eternal barroom anthem, "Jump Around," for the first time in a decade.
As Boston's delegate to La Coka Nostra – a white rap supergroup also comprised of ILL Bill of Non-Phixion, Big Left of Knockout Kings and Danny Boy, DJ Lethal and Everlast of House of Pain – Slaine played both host and centerpiece at what was billed as the record release party for his new CD, White Man is the Devil Vol. II: Citizen Cain. With Everlast and ILL Bill backstage, Slaine rocked "99 Bottles," guzzling draft brews between verses. Joined by Edo G and Jaysaun of his hometown crew, Special Teamz, he worked the local angle before waving in his guests. Towering over the crowd, ILL Bill unrolled a medley of his cult classics, from "Peace Sells" to the ever-relevant "Anatomy of a School Shooting." The music stopped for a minute when a wasted fan threw his drink on stage, but the score was settled with a barrage of punches from La Coka and a quick sweep by club security.
Between Bill's left hook, La Coka's Boston debut, Slaine's flames and Everlast's mere presence, the show was a memorable moment in local rap history. Even though most people there – artists included – probably won't remember it at all. (CREDIT: CHRIS FARAONE - BOSTON'S WEEKLY DIG/ BOSTON HERALD) | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| Nas Reveals More Info About New Album to MTV.com | 10/10/06 |
| | By: Trees Stop the presses! Nas is not going soft on his new LP, Hip Hop is Dead… The N as was reported earlier this year in Rolling Stone. MTV.com has reportedly previewed a few tracks and according to their recent article the QBMC is still very much street. In fact, Nas has stated that he hasn't even chosen a first single for the masses yet, but is definitely leaning towards a street anthem similar to what The Game did with "It's Okay (One Blood)".
The interview/article expands on the albums title as well, as many people are curious to know what Nas meant by stating "Hip Hop Is Dead". He explains, "When I say 'hip-hop is dead,' basically America is dead," he clarified. "There is no political voice. Music is dead. B2K is not New Edition. Chris Brown is great, I love Chris Brown, we need that, but Bobby Brown sticks in my heart. Our way of thinking is dead, our commerce is dead. Everything in this society has been done. It's like a slingshot, where you throw the muthafucka back and it starts losing speed and is about to fall down. That's where we are as a country. I don't wanna lose nobody with this, but what I mean by 'hip-hop is dead' is we're at a vulnerable state," he continued. "If we don't change, we gonna disappear like Rome. Let's break it down to a smaller situation. Hip-hop is Rome for the 'hood. I think hip-hop could help rebuild America, once hip-hoppers own hip-hop. ... We are our own politicians, our own government, we have something to say. We're warriors. Soldiers."
The production and guest appearances on the LP are heavy. With beats from Scott Storch, Dr. Dre, Kanye West, Just Blaze, Will.I.AM., and Chris Webber (yes the basketball player), and appearances from The Game, J.R. Gong, and a rumored Jay-Z collabo track, the album is set to shut down the holiday competition. Look for the new LP to drop 12/19.

| EL-P Talks To Pitchfork Media about LP Details | 10/10/06 |
| | By: Trees Details of EL-P's latest effort, I'll Sleep When You're Dead, the highly anticipated follow-up to 2002's Fantastic Damage were recently revealed to Pitchfork Media by the Def Jux president himself. In a lengthy interview conducted by the music industry website El-P extolled on the finer points of his latest opus including some surprising guest appearances, limited addition releases to coincide with the LP, and his future moves. To summarize the interview (which is available for reading here), guest appearances include Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor, the Mars Volta, Aesop Rock, Cage, Mr. Lif (whose track "might end up becoming a bonus cut" due to scheduling), Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Matt Sweeney (Chavez/Bonnie "Prince" Billy/Zwan), James McNew (Yo La Tengo), Rob Sonic, Mr. Dibbs, and Cat Power. However, EL-P was quick to explain that all of the involved artists are not necessarily featured in prominent formats, some simply contributed background vocals, or minor vocal details on tracks.
In addition to the release, EL-P stated that a limited edition vinyl only break-beat style record would be released to coincide with the main album. El-P explains the bonus record is basically, "a construction kit/battle break thing. Essentially what that's going to be is the drums for the record and then using different aspects of the record and kind of creating a battle break feel to it."
As far as future moves, El-P stated that he hopes to record another album for a 2008 release and after the promotion for "I'll Sleep When You're Dead" dies down, he will focus all of his efforts into the next Cannibal Ox release, which is slated for a fourth quarter 2007 release.

| Gnarls Barkley Start Work On Next LP… Sort Of | 10/10/06 |
| | By: Trees In a recent interview with NME, Dangermouse let it slip that he and the Cee-Lo have already begun tossing around ideas for the next Gnarls LP. Their recent debut LP, St. Elsewhere was a surprise commercial smash and fans are impatiently clamoring for new material from the duo. According to DM, St. Elsewhere took nearly three years to complete and the pair still believe in doing things right and not rushed. "We're going to do it the same way we did before - we're going to do it at our pace and see what happens. When we get into the groove with things, we do the songs in bunches, and so we know that all we need to do it is go back and start working. If we love what's coming out, then we'll do another record; if we don't love it the way we loved this one...then we won't do it." | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| Cage Beefs With The Gym Class Heroes | 10/10/06 |
| | By: Trees If you've been following the career of Cage you know the man is no stranger to the crazy world of hip hop beef. From Eminem to Esoteric the dude speaks his mind on shit that bothers him with brazen disregard for any potential repercussions. Cage's latest target, The Gym Class Heroes or as he recently referred to them in his MySpace Blog, The Gym Class Villains. Here is what Cage had to say about his former tour mates. "Apparently The ‘Gym Class Heroes' would like to have me open up for them on their ‘tour' and offer me 200 dollars to open up for them and the ‘cobra star ship butt troopers' and follow their tour bus around. I tried to be diplomatic about this but now my fans are being misled. I dropped off this tour LONG before it began (because I felt it was a bad look) and yet I am still on flyers. DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO BUYING TICKETS TO THIS FIASCO OF ART. I SINCERELY APOLOGIZE TO ANYONE WHO HAS LOST ANY MONEY.P.S. Vinnie you owe me an apology mother fucker!". From the looks of things, Cage is in the right but there are always two sides to every story. Personally, I'd love to see Cage end these lame wannabe popstars careers via a diss track or proper ass beating. Time will tell how this plays out. | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| J-Zone Retires From Rap w/ Historic Show | 10/2/06 |
| | By: Trees Not only did last weeks Juggaknots/J-Zone/Louis Logic show at CBGB's mark the final rap show for the legendary indie nightclub, it also served as J-Zone's unofficial New York City "retirement party". Rocking a $5,000 fox fur and a suit, he was up for the occasion. But the highlights of the last hurrah in his hometown were his onstage guests. Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse of Gnarls Barkley, former collaborator Al-Shid and a host of fine young ladies all joined the Zone in his final romp. The highlight of the night according to Zone himself
"Cee-Lo was in town for the week and had gotten at me a few days before the show about singing the hook for my song "Disco Ho" cause it has Dick $tallion doing the falsetto on there. $tallion couldn't make it, I needed a replacement. I was shocked he was feelin the song and was down to do it, and he's a real cool brother for comin through and doin that for me. I'm grateful for him, Al-Shid, Danger Mouse and everybody showin love. They made it so I can't possibly unretire from doin rap shows in the NYC area, unless I go completely major like opening for them Laffy Taffy people or something. I can't top last weeks show."
While it's on for new things for Zone- ("I'm deadin the J-Zone rappin thing, at least on an indie rap level"), he will still do DJ gigs, producer showcases and an occasional rap show overseas or out west ("I'll still do a show as a rapper in Cali, Europe or Canada because I get a lot of love there and I turn the trips into vactions"). Although he'll finish up 2006 with a spot date in nearby Canada, he is turning his focus to doing more production, behind the scenes music endeavors and other odds and ends like small indie movie roles and sportswriting for the future.
"I'm just tired of the indie rap thing and need a change. 8 years is a long time to be stuck in the same spot, and it's kinda taken its toll both professionally and personally. It was fun for a while, but you can only do shows in a fur coat buggin out on stage while everybody else is all serious battle rappin and freestylin for so long before you feel it's a lost cause. A lotta people didn't get it anyway. To keep interested in music, you gotta reinvent sometimes. I wanna do more instrumental records. I'm ready to do beats for singers, more pornos, strip club music, women's deodorant commercials, whatever. And not feel the need to be the J-Zone character 24/7, stay behind the scenes. I'm gonna try to stretch my limits and find more success and have more fun elsewhere. Maybe J-Zone the rapper will be back one day, but only on Jimmy Iovine's payroll!" | | | | Subscribe RSS |
