| Gears Steady Turning Under The Old Trucker Hat | 11/21/05 |
| | By: Trees Underground figurehead and Def Jux president El-P does not rest. The man eats, breathes, and lives underground hip hop. While most hip hop purists agree that El-P's style is not only original but almost futuristic, there are still the naysayers out there proclaiming the Co-Flow front man drops nothing more than space ship rap. 2006 is sure to prove once and for all who is right. First up on producer's hit list, Beantown dreddy Mr. Lif and his follow-up to the critically acclaimed debut, "I Phantom". The as yet untitled LP is slated to be produced almost entirely by El-P, with a few joints sprinkled in from Oh-No. After that, El-P spearheads the production credits on the highly anticipated and long overdue follow up to 2001's indie chart topping heroes, Cannibal Ox. And if that wasn't enough, 2006 also promises us a brand new full length from the CEO himself with his FanDam follow up, "I'll Sleep When You're Dead". One can also only hope that 2006 also brings the end to El's signature trucker hat collection. Either the man is still living in 2002 or dude is so ahead of his time he's rocking a trend 10 years away from making a resurgence. | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| It's 2006 For Ghostface And Redman | 11/9/05 |
| | By: Trees With quality singles lacing the airwaves from both Ghostface and Redman the public is really hyped right now for the top shelf Def Jam artists to drop their new LPs. It's true Redman is sounding the best he's sounded in years and Ghostface is delivering tracks that everyone from backpackers to grandmothers steady rotate in their playlists, but unfortunately the projects that both these veteran MCs have readied in time for Christmas won't see the light until early 2K6. Redman's fabled, "Red Gone Wild" LP, has literally been hyped up for almost three years now and with tracks like "Rush The Security", "Gilla House Check", and "Future Thugs" making their way into club sets and satellite radio Redman fans nationwide were salivating with an assumed 2005 release. As was the case with Ghostface and his project, "Fish Scale". The Pete Rock produced "Be Easy" was easily one 2005's strongest songs and unfortunately will now serve as an album teaser as opposed to a lead single. Additionally, the track making waves that both artists are featured on; "Future Thugs", originally intended to be on Redman's new LP will now actually appear on the new Ludacris/DTP album dropping this December. And speaking of that new Luda/DTP joint the album is slated to come with a bonus DVD featuring full length videos for a majority of the tracks on the LP. | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| | By: Trees The Boston underground hip hop scene is poppin' off something fierce right now. The O.G. generation is still rocking strong, but it's clear the next wave is ready to crash on the national scene. Next up to the plate an MC who's been bubbling below the surface for a hot minute. He's someone you might have heard on Edan's latest LP, the critically acclaimed "Beauty And The Beat" or one of Insight's many projects, or maybe you seen him rockin' stage shows along the likes of KRS-One, Big Shug or Edo. G. Of course if you haven't figured out who I'm talking bout yet, slap yourself the knowledge. I'm speaking of the man known as Dagha, an MC who recently just dropped his debut solo LP, "Object In Motion" on Last Arc Records November 1st. Dagha's flow has been described to sound along the lines of a young GZA or new age Percee P which has helped him lace monstrous vocals over the LP's stellar production from contributors Insight, DJ Real, and Meistro. As a former member of the Roxbury chapter of the Zulu Nation, Dagha was educated on the importance of keeping it real through education, intelligence, and hip hop. His outlook on the current hip hop landscape is grim which is why his album tends to focus on forward motion through positivity. "I'm not trying to be conscious" Dagha proclaims, "I just believe that I have a responsibility not to spread negativity. I mean I love hip-hop but when my four old daughter is racing down the hall screaming skeet, skeet, skeet, I'm like what the hell are things coming to?!" | | By: Trees Fat Beats is like the G-Unit of the underground right now. After the tremendous success of One.Be.Lo's debut album S.O.N.O.G.R.A.M. the fam over at Fat Beats realized that there is definite cheddar to be made through the label side of the burgeoning hip hop distribution and retail chain. The company recently completed a wave of signings that include the legendary Count Bass D, and up and coming Buffalo MCs, Pseudo Slang. Count Bass D's Fat Beats debut, "Act Your Waist Size", is currently without a release date, and is still in the recording stages while Pseudo Slang's label debut is set for spring of 2006. To peep a promotional mp3 of Pseudo Slang right click this link, and 'save target as..' ::FatBeats:: With moves like these it is apparent that Fat Beats is attempting to stake a permanent claim to underground hip hop supremacy. Check back in the future for updates on all these projects.
