Duckdown Making Power Moves - Signs KRS-One & DJ Revolution
2/27/08
Buckshot / KRS LP Coming Soon..
By: Mark DiSalvo The Teacha is now a member of the Duckdown Records family. Duckdown also announced the signing of DJ Revolution today. The label confirmed that the upcoming KRS release will be a collaborative effort between the Teacha and Buckshot. Duckdown Records Co-President Dru Ha said that the label is beyond humbled and honored to have KRS-One as part of the family. "I know how much respect Buck has for KRS, so I can only imagine how this will elevate his game," Dru-Ha said of Buckshot's work with KRS-One, "it's Old School to those that don't keep up with the current works and movements but to me, I would call it Now School." The rumors surrounding KRS-One and Duck Down Records have been swirling since late last year, and today's bombshell announcement sets up a promising 2008 to follow the label's unprecedentedly successful year of 2007.
The producer, DJ and multi-talented DJ Revolution's signing is another victory in the world of DJ's securing solo record deals. His new album King of the Decks, will be released on Duckdown Records in the fall of 2008. The long list of appearances on the record include KRS-One, Sean Price, Dilated Peoples, Alchemist, Royce 5'9", Q-Bert, Kidz in the Hall, Buckshot, Planet Asia and many more to come.

By: Trees Chi-town native, girlfriend of DJ A-Trak, sister of Flosstradamus member J2K, and overall cute little thang, Kid Sister has officially inked a deal with independent label Downtown Records - the label which Mos Def and Gnarls Barkley both call home. Her debut album, KoKo B. Ware is scheduled for release this summer through Downtown. “Their roster is impeccable and the attitude at the company is so relaxed and cool,” Kid Sister said of her new recording home. “I don't wanna call them an indie and definitely won't call them a major but still they've got some serious muscle. They're just that rare, perfect fit you always dream about…like a fancy pair of jeans!” Props to Kid Sister - now maybe she can finally quit her 9-5 slanging bibs and onesies at the kid's clothing store? Nahhhhhhh….

By: Mark DiSalvo Ever wondered what a talk show starring Slug and Ant would look like? We didn't either, but were pleasantly surprised when we learned that Atmosphere is now putting out a weekly YouTube talk show. The duo isn't out to pull any Oprah or Tyra-like stunts, but they're doing it to take questions directly from the fans and promote their new album, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. Among the topics covered on the first episode are why the group tours with a live band, and where their favorite place to perform is. Yeah, the questions are kind of lame, but that's why they're asking you to write in. Send questions to PAINTITGOLD (AT) HOTMAIL dot com. The new Atmosphere album is set to drop April 22.
By: Mark DiSalvo By now, the events surrounding Prodigy's arrest that lead to his three and a half year sentence have been sufficiently aired out. It never hurts to hear it straight from the source though. Courtesy of KaramloopTV.com, Prodigy tells the story of the night he was arrested and how the cops tried to coerce him into setting up 50 Cent. The head of the G-Unit family is a marked man if you take P's word for it.

By: Mark DiSalvo Truth and Soul Records, a Brooklyn based label, is prepping the release of their latest compilation CD Fallin' Off the Reel Vol. 2. It's set to drop March 11. Truth and Soul is a label that has been slowly gaining acclaim in music circles for its quality funk and soul releases. The compilation will feature a variety of rare tracks that were once only available as 7” singles. Vol. 2 has every Truth & Soul 45 single presented in chronological order from 2006 until now. Among the groups featured are El Michels Affair and Bronx River Parkway. Fallin Off the Reel Vol. 1 was a hit among urban music fans and this record doesn't look like it will disappoint. The El Michels Affair has performed live with the Wu-Tang Clan before, and by the graces of YouTube, you can peep some of their performances here and here.

By: Mark DiSalvo If you ask DJ Khaled, the latest track he recorded with Nas will be as big as “Hate Me Now” was when Nas teamed up with Diddy. “We did a record for my [upcoming] album. I'm in the studio right now working for my [new] album,” Khaled told MTV News, “But I told Nas if he wants to use that for his first single, we can go and do that and make history.” There still isn't a title for the record or an official track listing for Nas' new LP. Other high profile producers like Jermaine Dupri have also been confirmed to be working with Nas on the album. Dupri told MTV News that he's switching up his style lately, and Nas wanted a track in that new vibe.“A lot of the rappers' rappers were coming at me after they heard the 'Fallin' record on the Jay-Z album [American Gangster], like, 'Make me one of them,'” he told MTV, “[The single for Nas] is in the same vein as that [song]… That's the type of sound he wanted for his record. He wanted me to give him something that was soulful but at the same time had a little commercial feel to it. It's gonna be interesting to see."

By: Mark DiSalvo Maybe Common's out to avenge his Grammy loss to fellow Chi-town native, Kanye West, but he's got another album in the pipeline. With the LP, The Believer, likely to hit by the end of the year, he's telling MTV News, “I'm just getting in the mode.” This news comes on the heels of learning that Common's been collaborating with Q-Tip for a special project, titled The Standard. “We've been conceptualizing, but we just gotta continue to work on it,” he told MTV, “We will. I look at it like two jazz musicians getting together, the way Charlie Parker and cats would get together and do work.”
