Bigg Jus Reppin' Hard In 20063/30/06
By: A-Ronious
LUNE TNS aka Bigg Jus is all over the scene this year with a slew of new projects on the horizon. The third installment of the innovative NMS collaboration with Orko Elohiem is in the works, and this time around it's on a whole new sound. Jus is also working on another solo album and a graffiti-themed limited edition release for later this year. Besides all that, Justoleum appears in and does the title track for the movie The Money Shot which features dissenting political authorities Noam Chomsky and Howard Zinn, and is slated for an October release. If that's not enough, Jus will be pod casting new music and video material at the end of the year. Last but not least is a mysterious, large scale project with MF Doom and unidentified others in late 2006- all in all it's an exciting year for fans of one of hip hop's most creative and challenging voices.

Hiero Keeps On Keepin' On3/30/06
By: Trees
While the public is eagerly anticipating the day another Deltron album will drop, Del the Funky Homosapien is staying busy with other shit. In a few weeks Del will drop a new DVD entitled The 11th Hour. The DVD is essentially filmed reality show style, following the Cali native around town as he performs his daily routines. If anyone has ever seen Del cruising around Cali on his scooter you could only imagine the tomfoolery the man has filmed for this release. Del explains the concept stating, "The DVD shows people what I'm really about. It's basically a reality show of my life during the recording of my new album; dealing with the personal drama, studying music theory, and being on the road".

Hiero Imperium are also planning on releasing two more major titles in the coming months. First, a new full length from A-Plus entitled, My Last Good Deed and Pep Love's follow up to Ascension entitled, Reconstruction.

Lord Jamar To Release Solo Debut on Babygrande3/13/06
By: Trees
Brand Nubian's own, Lord Jamar has taken a hiatus from expanding his acting résumé, (catch him on this season's Sopranos), to deliver fans a concept album entitled The 5% Album. The album features appearances from the GZA, Raekwon, RZA, Lord Jamar's own son, Young Lord J, and Papa Wu. According to the official press release for "5%", the album delves into "unparalleled scrutiny of the culturally paradigmatic social movement that affected the development of such artists as Rakim, Nas, The Wu-Tang Clan and more. The 5% Album is a legend's examination of the past, present, and future of one of hip-hop's cornerstone ideologies". Interesting stuff, but will Lord Jamar deliver? Cop the album May 23rd and find out!

Three Six Mafia Make History3/7/06
By: Damino
It was enough that Three 6 Mafia was the first hip-hop act to perform a song at an Academy Awards ceremony. (2003 Best Original Song nominee, Eminem, declined to perform or even appear at the event to receive the statuette for "Lose Yourself.") However, not only did the performance by Three 6 go off (with slightly modified lyrics), they actually pulled a fantastic upset, topping Dolly Parton and Bird York to win the Best Original Song Oscar for "It's Hard Out Here For a Pimp" from Hustle and Flow. Only fitting, the first African-American hip-hop act to be nominated for Best Original Song was introduced by Ludacris (featured in both Hustle and Flow and Best Picture Winner, Crash) and presented their award by Queen Latifah (Best Supporting Actress nominee for 2002's Chicago). The Three 6 Mafia win led to the most impassioned acceptance speech of the night, prompting Oscar host Jon Stewart to quip, "Now that's how you accept an Oscar." For those of you keeping score at home, hip-hop tracks are now 2 for 2 in the Best Original Song category. What's really good?

Median Signs With Halftooth3/3/06
By: Trees
North Carolina's own, Median, has just signed a deal with Halftooth Records, (home of Wordsworth, Oddisee, and Kenn Starr). Median is a member of the hip hop powerhouse known as The Justus League which consists of underground hip hop heavyweights such as Little Brother, the Away Team, L.E.G.A.C.Y., Cesar Comanche, Edgar Allen Floe, and Chaundon. Halftooth's president David Schrager spoke highly of Median stating "Median brings his own unique sound and vibe, he is a perfect fit for Halftooth Records. Low Budget [which consists of Oddisee, Kenn Starr, Kev Brown, DJ Roddy Rod and more] and The Justus League are two of the most talented and groundbreaking Hip-Hop crews to emerge since the legendary Native Tongues in the early ‘90s, and we are very happy to now be a part of both of these growing movements of incredible artists." It will definitely be exciting to see some potential Low Budget/ Justus League collabos in the near future.

The Juice Crew 23/2/06
By: Mastejo
Roxanne Shante and MC Shan are reportedly looking into reforming the Juice Crew, one of hip hop's true early powerhouses. The original group consisted of Big Daddy Kane, Kool G. Rap, Craig G, MC Shan, Shante, Biz Marke, and others. Shante and Shan are hoping to restart the group with fresh talent and are even allowing for open submissions at thejuicecrew@hotmail.com. Davey D reports that Shan and Shante had the following to say: "We can make it any ole' crew," MC Shan says. "But we want to make it something people know so it can carry on the legacy of the original crew." Shan also emphasizes, "The new Juice Crew will be something different; not the 'I slang drugs, I got jewelry' rhymes; it'll be more talented artists." It will be interesting to see what if anything comes of this.
