By: Trees
Last night in Boston Jus Allah re-united on stage with Vinny Paz putting to doubt any rumors that the duo were not getting back together. The pair performed several songs together and officially certified that the next JMT album will feature both MCs. There are also rumors going around that Bomshot was waiting outside for Jus Allah, but that of course hasn't been confirmed.

Nabo Rawk Ready To Rock3/30/07
By: Trees
Nabo Rawk is the notorious front man of Porn Theatre Ushers. The Boston based group comprised of Nabo (Emcee) and Mister Jason (Producer) released two acclaimed independent albums: Sloppy Seconds (1999) on Biscuit Head Records (same label to release Edan's first recordings) featuring a rare guest appearance by Cage and later the sophomore effort Taxachusetts (2004) on Detonator Records . The Porn Theatre Ushers have had a cult following since 1997 when they burst on the scene with 12" underground staples such as "Me and Him", "Cat Nip", "Wack Parties" and "Hellmouth" on college and commercial radio stations. Porn Theater Ushers managed to attract attention from countries all over the world with a sound that is comparable to artists of the late 80's early 90's. Nabo Rawk is now more focused than ever and ready to unleash his new solo debut Mount Olympus Steeze on Early Spotter Recordings. Cop the shit when it drops.

Lifesavas Are Really Major Right Now3/30/07
By: Trees
We haven't heard much from the Lifesavas the last few years but 2007 is shaping up to be a serious year for the Portland, OR based MCs. The Lifesavas sophomore album Gutterfly drops on April 24, and meanwhile they'll be hitting the road with DJ Shadow. Critics are already hailing the album as a classic, and Rolling Stone says the album "...should put Lifesavas over the top. Jumbo produces most of the tracks, using a dense stew of samples from Seventies soul, while Vursatyl inhabits a wide range of characters with a limber flow."
The guest spots on the album are also no joke. George Clinton, Fishbone, ISH (Butterfly/ Digable Planets), Camp Lo, dead prez, Vernon Reid, Don Blackman, Maga*nut, Smif 'N' Wessun and Jake One. To check out a track off the new LifeSavas, click here: Dead Ones feat. Nas & Fishbone

National Geographic, More Than Just Soft-Core Porn?3/30/07
By: The Dance
You can peep the newest issue of National Geographic for something more than the chance of some hot African titties. This month's issue contains an article entitled "Hip Hop Planet" which features a full color graphic fold out. Some of the subjects discussed include the evolution of African American music, the lack of public school funding and how it has contributed to hip hop, and the influence of the Last Poets on hip hop culture. There are also name checks for The Roots, Mos Def, and Melle Mel, among others. Educate yourself.

Guilty Simpson = Stones Throw Family3/30/07
By: The Dance
Stones Throw has been steady grinding lately even without Pharrell or Pusha T. The label that's most recently released Dilla's much bootlegged 2002 album Ruff Draft has signed Detroit's own Guilty Simpson to their highly accredited roster. Simpson recorded extensively with the late Jay Dee before his passing and the bulk of their work together will be featured on Guilty's Stones Throw debut. You can catch Guilty Simpson on recent and upcoming releases by Black Milk, Percee P, D12, and Phat Kat.

B-Ball Rap Will Never Die3/30/07
By: The Dance
This is for all of you NBA fans/cheese lovers. Spurs guard, and Frenchie, Tony Parker has released two rap singles in the last few weeks, both of which have music videos and both of which feature Parker rapping in his native language. The first track, entitled "Top Of the Game" features guests Fabolous and a French rapper named Booba, you can watch it here. The second, entitled "Balance Toi" has got Tony's wifey, Eva Longoria, all over the video, which you can watch here. I don't know what Tony's saying, but it probably has something to do with how his team will lose to the Phoenix Suns if they face each other in the playoffs this year.

Tony Yayo Beating Up Kids?3/22/07
By: Trees
Rumors have been heavily circulating around the internet that G-Unit member Tony Yayo has recently been involved in an altercation with a 16 year old. Lil' Henchmen, the son of CZAR Entertainment's CEO Jimmy Henchmen (manager of the Game, Brandy etc.), was approached in a Manhattan parking lot by Tony Yayo and members of his entourage; including Yayo's homey, Baja. You may remember Baja's name from the shooting death of Busta Rhymes' bodyguard, Israel Ramirez, he was implicated as being connected to that crime. Apparantly, Yayo and his entourage approached Lil' Henchmen and his entourage, exchanged words, and Yayo attacked the 16 year old. Of course, none of this has been confirmed by anyone involved, but the streets are talking. Stay tuned..

KRS and Marley Marl Team Up For New Album3/22/07
By: Trees
Who would have thought we'd see the day back in ‘86. KRS-ONE and Marley Marl are teaming up for a new record. The album, titled Hip Hop Lives, is Executive Produced by Marley Marl and will be released on May 22nd, 2007. "Hip Hop Lives" and "Kill A Rapper," lead the album project as two very relevant songs for the Hip Hop community right now. "Kill A Rapper" touches on the murders of popular rappers and begs the question of why Rap murders go unresolved by the police? "Hip Hop Lives" focuses upon Hip Hop's immortality and reminds us of the ways in which Hip Hop renews itself annually. For 20 years KRS ONE and Marley Marl have been known for producing classic Rap material; Hip Hop Lives is clearly another classic. KRS-ONE and Marley Marl met in 1986 during the height of the "answer record" era in Rap music. After Roxanne Shante answered UTFO and MC Shan answered L.L.Cool J, KRS-ONE and the late DJ Scott La Rock answered MC Shan's recording "Queensbridge" with the recording "South Bronx". Since 1986 KRS-ONE and Marley Marl have both been on a mission to preserve Hip Hop's original sound. This collaboration comes at a time when Hip Hop's future seems to be threatened by over-commercialized rap performances and cultural disunity. KRS-ONE and Marley Marl intend to change all of that.

What's Up With Boom Bip?3/22/07
By: Trees
Haven't heard from him in a while.. but the dude is back with a new MySpace blog shedding some light on some recent happenings. Apparantly the producer is putting out a brand new EP, titled, Sacchrilege on Lex Records. The joint drops April 2rd in the UK, May 8th in the U.S. He coyly described the records as "dancetastic", and "a Boom Bip release for DJs". He's also embarking on a European tour in April, so get your euros up. Boom Bip was also speaking some L.A. dates, so if you're in Cali.. here's what he had to say, "Los Angeles shows with Heavens on the 23 of March at Troubadour and 25th at El Rey. Ticketmaster has tickets for El Rey. I believe the Troubadour is sold out. I have heard Indie 103.1 in Los Angeles is giving away tickets this week so give them a call when they mention the show.". Finally, Bip mentioned that the new full length album is in the final mixing stages, and Neon Neon will be the lead single.

iCON The Mic King Teams Up With Chum The Skrilla Guerilla3/22/07
By: Trees
For years, iCON The Mic King has held down the underground scene. The North Philly MC has reveled in his notoriety, winning battles coast to coast, but like many dominate battle MCs trying to make the jump from punch line rapper to respected artist, iCON has felt his share of setbacks. Album delays, failed tours, and the hardships of the music industry have not kept him down. Confident he is now armed with a certified banger, he is preparing to set out on a national tour with Souls Of Mischief to promote his new release Mike & The Fatman, which is produced entirely by Chum The Skrilla Guerilla (Apathy, Demigodz crew). "It's like a mini-concept joint that Chum and I came up with", explains iCON as to the buddy-cop theme that runs through several songs and the interludes in the album. "I'm like the serious, ass kicking cop and Chum portrays this ignorant, stereotypical bad cop eating donuts all day and ordering hookers on the job. We never get anything done because Chum makes us late for everything". Also included as bonus tracks are two joints from Australian producer Styalz Fuego who just produced the new Chamillionaire single with Kelis. Guesting on the bonus tracks is Killah Priest, whom iCON has done several tours with and Blue Raspberry, famous for her sultry vocals on many Wu-Tang joints. And if that wasn't enough, iCON' also announced that he will have an exclusive mixtape titled Rent Money 2 only available for sale on the tour.

Black Attack and Butta Verses Drop New Shit3/22/07
By: Trees
Veteran MC's Black Attack and Butta Verses are due to release their new respective singles via 12" and digital downloads this coming April. Black Attack's single, "Black Man," is a hypnotic song that takes the listener on a journey through Black's world as a veteran rapper. The song, which was produced by V.I.C. (Nas, Big Pun, Kool G Rap, Rakim), has been burning up the underground charts and has already sold more than 3,000 ringtones with little promotion. Butta Verses' single, which is entitled, "Jones In Ya Bones," is a soulful ditty about wanting the finer things in life, whether they be women, cuisine, fashion, etc. Butta explains, "I'm just a regular dude and I rhyme about everyday life. My audience can relate to me on every level. Maybe one day I'll have the hot cars and I'll rhyme about that." The song features Lucien and is produced by Marco Polo (Masta Ace, Boot Camp Clik and Sadat X). To preview the Butta Verses track Click Here and for the Black Attack joint Click Here.

Rawkus Responds To EL-P3/9/07
By: Trees
Well.. It didn't take long. Here is Rawkus's Official Response.

"We thought the photo of you and Puff was cool. We posted it without comment. We immediately removed it upon request. But you had to go there... Straight attack our credibility and intentions with that slanderous rant. Keep in mind WE HAVEN'T SAID A WORD to you since 1998. Why are you salty? Be happy, you are successful and rich. Regardless of our obvious distaste for one another, we've admired Def Jux's success and sincerely respect your roster of artists. But you had to go there......

El-P, your recent post has drawn attention to our intentions as promoters and marketers in the Hip Hop community. Haters, like you, seem to suffer from historical amnesia. We thought it was time we directly addressed the Hiphop community and post some facts.

Our mission at Rawkus.com is to create a vibrant supportive community for hip hop, including all factions and styles. The post showing El-P and Puffy was in no way meant to discredit El-P as an artist or producer. Puffy is a mogul and his appearance with an underground artist like El-P was news worthy and interesting. However, we have a strict policy against creating bullshit beefs and reserve the right to delete comments and posts that overtly create hate instead of fostering creative debate. This post was removed once it was brought to our attention that El-P was offended by it.

For the past ten years our mission has been to help artists promote and make money---a mission we were very successful at. We have contributed HEAVY financial resources into promoting Black Star, Mos Def, Kweli, Pharoahe Monche, Big L and many other underground artists in our history of Soundbombing, Lyricist Lounge, and 100s of 12" releases.

Our history is full of success and breakthroughs. Mos Def and Kweli have sold almost 1.5 million albums each and are both powerful stars now. While we worked together, Pharoahe Monche had two huge hits ("Simon Says" and "Oh No") and sold almost 300,000 albums. We supported Common during his label
transition by successfully promoting "Respiration" and "1999." Big L went GOLD! The Soundbombing and Lyricist Lounge compilations sold over 1 million copies. Remember "Body Rock", "Definition", "Ms. Fat Booty", "Umi Says", "Simon Says", "The Light", "Respiration", "My Life", "The Blast", "Get By", "Oh No", "Flamboyant", "Fortified Live", "Universal Magnetic" and "End to End Burners"?

Of course we could not hit home runs every time, and some VERY talented artists experienced frustration as Rawkus hit temporary obstacles in dealing with MCA/Universal in 2003-2004. Everybody knows how treacherous the music industry is. If you stay in it long enough, you will have your fair share of doors slammed in your face- we have! You stay in the game because your will to succeed, far out weighs your fear of defeat. We are proud of RAWKUS.COM's growing community of driven artists and individuals. While the game has changed, our mission at RAWKUS is still on point; market and promote NEW under-appreciated artists and respect the older generation of hip hop. We firmly believe the community should decide the value of music, not critics or haters.

El-P Pushes Rawkus Beef To Next Level3/9/07
By: Trees
EL-Producto has launched into angry tirade against his former label Rawkus Records in his recent blog post. For those that have followed El-P over the years, you already know he's hated the razorblade since he left the label years ago to form Def Jux. This is underground hip hop beef at it's best. Angry over a picture they distributed on the internet showing the Def Jux honcho chillin' with Diddy, EL-P believed the label was attempting to smear his reputation as he prepares to release his incredible new album, I'll Sleep When You're Dead. Here are some excerpts from his blog:

"These twisted, corrupted shit eaters (Rawkus RecordS) who stole money from everyone they worked with, fired their staff a few days before Christmas, signed amazing artists and never put their records out, blocked artists they had under contract from signing to other labels even after they had driven their label in to the ground and weren't even functioning, sycophantically attempted to attach themselves to anyone in the mainstream they possibly could, etc. etc. etc..."

"well here they are again. the "new" rawkus. launching again for any sad sap of an artist who wants to wake up one day and realize they are getting screwed, for any staff member who wants an honest pay only to eventually realize they are disposable. the "new" rawkus. the ones who are literally dispersing questionnaires in Europe to fans asking what type of music they should be releasing. the "new" rawkus. so these motherfuckers take the picture that was taken with my camera and post it up on their site with a news piece entitled something to the effect of: "company flows el-p and puffy?" that's it. as though the picture is some sort of statement about me. as though the picture is proof of me "selling out". then they have one of their staff members go around to various message boards like OKAYPLAYER and the post about it in any and every post about my new album. oh yeah? you like the el-p record? check out this picture of him and puffy! oh word? you think el is a dope producer? check out this picture of him and puffy!"

Immortal Technique In Rotation Next To Akon and Richboy??3/9/07
By: Trees
Good news for all you independent artists out there. The Associated Press reports Clear Channel Communications, CBS Radio, Entercom Communications and Citadel Broadcasting, which together own more than 1,500 radio stations, agreed to pay $12.5 million in fines to end an investigation into payola and put an end to the practice. As part of the agreement, all four broadcasters will provide 8,400 half-hour segments of free airtime to independent record labels and local artists. The free airtime would be granted to companies not owned or controlled by the nation's four dominant music labels - Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Universal Music Group and EMI Group.

All of the afomentioned major labels have been involved in the payola scandals which they resolved with multi-million settlements in the past two years. In addition to airplay, the broadcasters and the independent labels have also negotiated a set of "rules of engagement" that will guide how record company representatives and radio programmers interact. The new "rules of engagement" are aimed at requiring equal access to radio music programmers for all record companies as well as transparency in their dealings. This is a huge step for independent music worldwide. On the surface it seems as though this could be the equivalent of winning the lotto for music fans. This could literally change the landscape of the entire music industry. BUT.. we all know how these corporations operate, so I'll believe it when I hear it.
