Big Shug Readies New LP on Babygrande5/24/07
By: Trees
If you talk to UGHH CEO Quest he will probably tell you that his favorite album in the last two years was Big Shug's debut LP, Who's Hard. With most of the production handled by DJ Premier, Shug handled the responsibility of being a card carrying member of the Gang Starr foundation nicely. Who's Hard was a definite street sleeper by many, and a gem enjoyed by those who had the opportunity to listen to it. Today Big Shug is preparing the release of his sophomore LP, Streetchamp. Staying true to the Gang Starr Foundation formula, Big Shug recreates his indelible bond with DJ Premier with three tracks produced by him on the new LP including the street-banger "It Just Don't Stop." For round two, however, Shug also taps rising producer MoSS to guide his sonic tour de force. Streetchamp features appearances from Termanology, M.O.P.'s Lil Fame and Sean Price with the latter two joining forces with Big Twins from Infamous Mobb on the massive posse cut "Leg Breakers." Streetchamp is dropping very soon on Babygrande Records, so look out for that and be sure to also check out Big Shug as he holds down co-hosting duties on DJ Premier's Sirius Satellite Radio show "Live From HeadQCourterz" every Friday night from midnight-2AM.

No Dipset Beef ?5/24/07
By: Trees
Put the rumors to rest guys, Jimmy Jones is not beefing with the homo-erotic harlemite known as Killa Cam. Dipset must've had a meeting or something because in less than 24 hours two Dipset members have come forward to say that all is good in the land of crack sales, purple fur coats, and $7 p/ album Koch record deals. First Jimmy got on Kay Slay's Sirius show and had this to say about the current status of the Diplomats, "Everything is everything; it's still Diplomats for life. Shout out to Juelz, he's working an album, he's also working on an album with Lil' Wayne called I Cant Feel My Face; shout out to Freeky Zeekey, shout out to Killa." Across town, Dipset affiliate Hell Rell also shot down gossip of beef between any Diplomat members when he called into DJ Absolut's Hot 97 radio show. "There is no beef," Rell demanded. "Everybody who thinks we're arguing or we beefing, that's a no-no. We all family. It's been worked out. You seen Jim didn't make that call to Funkmaster Flex, right? Don't listen to rumors, Dipset is still family." Well, that's good. I was really fucking nervous that Dipset would be breaking up. I mean, can you imagine? Dipset without Killa Cam is like NSYNC without Timberlake.

Time Machine Update: New LP, Mixtape, Blog, Tour5/24/07
By: Trees
People always ask me, Hey Trees, whats up with Time Machine. My answer; I don't know. Finally, something came across my radar that I figured I'd pass along to all you Time Machine fans out there. The crew just went on tour to Europe with People Under The Stairs and they blogged about it. They started in Switzerland, and the whirlwind 9-shows-in-9-days effort also whipped them through England and Scotland. In addition, they also dropped a new Tour Only Mix CD. The brand new Glow Like This Mix CD was mixed by Time Machine's Producer/DJ Mekalek, and hosted by Glow-in-the-Dark Records label-mate Jahpan. The CD consists of new and unreleased music from Time Machine, Panacea, Shawn Jackson, The Project, and other artists. Some of the tracks are already circulating on the artists' MySpace pages. And TM fans, don't forget to catch up with the crew at their new website/blog, online www.glowlikethis.com. Time Machine emcee and Glow-in-the-Dark Records co-founder, Jaysonic stated, "Glow Like This is what our fans and friends have long been asking for… a steadily-updated interactive web headquarters that allows our whole team to share their experiences, personalities, and of course, their music." You see, there you go.. Jaysonic knows that his fans have been asking for some news to keep them updated with. Oh and I saved the best news for last; the group reports that they are about half-way done with recording their next, not-yet-titled studio album. Confirmed guests thus far are Greg Nice (Nice N Smooth), Jahpan and Shawn Jackson. Mekalek handles the bulk of production duties, and long-time collaborator Stoerok is also involved. TM is planning for an early 2008 release and in addition they will release the digital-only Live In Montana, a recording of an October 2005 show in Bozeman, Montana of all places, through iTunes and other paid download services this summer. Happy? Good.

Shaman Works Announces A Shitload Of New Signings5/24/07
By: Trees
The offices over at Shaman Work Recordings must be a busy fucking place these days. In the past few weeks Shaman has been on it's grustle, signing a fury of new and veteran talent alike. It's roster is growing like my beer belly. By announcing that they have partnered up with Wise Intelligent of Poor Righteous Teachers and J.Rawls, Shaman instantly added two solid underground legends to their roster. The highly anticipated and long awaited album from Wise Intelligent, entitled The Talented Timothy Taylor, is set to be released on July 17th. Always one to bring the focus of conscious content and skillful lyricism to the table, Wise's next release will be sure not to disappoint. "Creative minds that respect each other will eventually be drawn to each other," says Shaman Work President, John Robinson, aka Lil' Sci, speaking on the development of Shaman's relationship with Wise Intelligent. The deal to link up with J.Rawls' is a mutually exciting venture for Rawls as an artist and Shaman Work as a label. Robinson went on to say this regarding Rawls, "He has been through all the ins and outs! He's a vet[eran] who is a positive person and 'he gets it.'" Other agreements have been reached with a number of artists recently signed to Shaman Work including U-George (of Hemisphere), DJ K.O., Blackberry Jones, K Banger, Tiffany Paige along with Sene & Chief who form the Garbage Pail Kids. Keep an eye on Shaman kids. They're positioning themselves to be the next big thing.

Hip Hop And Titties5/24/07
By: Trees
Remember the Shriiimp show UGHH co-sponsored earlier this year. You know, the art show where live models had graffiti painted on their naked tittays. Oh yeah! Well, Boston based entertainment company Future Classic announced today that they have teamed up with Shriiimp to take urban fashion, sexy body art, and DJ Babu to some of the hottest venues across major U.S. cities. Hailing from Canada, Shriiimp is a popular art collective that specializes in high quality street-influenced artwork painted on live models. Internationally recognized artist, Buff Monster, will be joining the tour as the marquee artist, along with four to five local artists in each market to support the body-painting exhibition. The Shriiimp tour will feature a funky soundtrack provided by DJ Babu, one-third of the hip-hop group Dilated Peoples and member of the Beat Junkies DJ crew. Right now there are TWO California dates scheduled, with more to come. Shriiimp goes down June 22 @ Milk Bar, San Francisco, CA and June 23 @ Sky Drop Loft, Los Angeles, CA. Benzi Signs W/ Amalgam Entertainment5/24/07
By: Trees
DJ Benzi recently announced joining the roster of the rising boutique label and independent hip hop distribution powerhouse; Amalgam Entertainment in which he has inked the deal to unleash his official debut album entitled Get Right which is slated for a late 2007 release. Many of you already know Benzi from his work with Lil' Wayne and the Clipse. Wait you don't know him? And you call yourself a hip hop fan. He's the dude that was responsible for compiling and mixing those molten hot remix CDs –or- refixes as he calls them, Clipse's We Got The Remix and Weezy's None Higher (now available). The album confirms production by DJ Benzi, Tittsworth, Diplo, The Amps, Curtis Vodka, Nick Catchdubs, and Mr. J Patt as well as original tracks from Hip Hop superstars and up and comers alike. When he's not busy crafting the finishing touches to 'Get Right', you can find Benzi currently working with Sirius Satellite Radio and has a soon to be syndicated mix show "Get Right Radio" launching in the near future. Benzi is definitely an artist to keep an eye on and ear open for. And while you're waiting, scoop up the 'None Higher' joint. I did.

Musab's A Pimp By Blood5/17/07
By: Trees
When the mighty Rhymesayers Ent. formed back in '96, their first artist was Musab, (formerly known as Beyond). The first album, Comparison helped put the rookie label on the map and also paved the way for artists like Atmosphere and the Rhymesayers super crew The Dynospectrum to flourish. Fast forward ten years and a new label, and we find Musab making music for Hiero Imperium. That's right, Musab is now signed to Hiero. If that's not all, he's preparing to drop a new album early this summer. The album, Slick's Box is an unadulterated tell-all about his true profession, pimping. No, not that cliché ‘Big Pimpin' bullshit, Musab is a legitimate hard working, professional pimp. Born in Minneapolis, MN, to a fifteen-year-old mother deep in the game and raised by an assortment of women who were all affiliated with pimps, Musab is literally "A pimp by blood," a product of the secret society that is pimping. Musab's frustration with hip-hop co-opting and misrepresenting his professional lifestyle inspired the more personal approach taken on Slick's Box. "Pimpin' is nothing to glorify," explains Musab, "It's also about paying your girl's dentist bills and college tuition. It's a dirty game and a strenuous lifestyle." True to form, Slick's Box showcases the flashy side as well as the not oft seen shadowy side of pimpin'. On the track "Hats and Shoes," Musab uses an almost spoken word delivery (Musab refers to this unique style as "Pimp Slur") casually reliving the pleasures of pimpin'. In contrast, the track "Confessions," has Musab coming clean about his profession to his daughter in a singularly awkward father/daughter moment. Sure to be an interesting album, look for it in August.

Aesop Rock Reveals More Info About His Fourth Solo: None Shall Pass:5/17/07
By: Trees
Aes recently spoke with indie-rock website, Pitchfork on details of his upcoming return to the limelight with the None Shall Pass full-length dropping on Definitive Jux, Aug 28th, 2007. The album features some usual, and some unusual suspects, such as long-time friend John Darnielle of Mountain Goats (???) and as previously reported, contributions from El-P, Cage, Rob Sonic, DJ Big Wiz, and Breeze Brewin. Most of None's production came from frequent Aesop collaborator Blockhead, but there are also beats from El-P, Rob Sonic, and Aesop himself. The Dance Rants About 9th Wonder and Brand Nubian5/17/07
By: The Dance
The Dance checking in here with some tidbits from the Underground. Thinking of continuing your education? If so, you might want to know that 9th Wonder and Chris Martin (of Kid N' Play) currently teach a course at North Carolina Central University entitled "Hip Hop in Context." Check out a video of 9th teaching as well as student responses to the course here. I guess 9th spent all his Destiny's Child money. And this one's for all of you old school heads, the word on the street is that Grand Puba of Brand Nubian is set to release an album produced entirely by Lord Finesse of D.I.T.C. We'll see how that works out, too bad they didn't think of this back in '96 before the biggest hip hop songs were about corny dances and taking pictures with a camera phone. Walk it out.

Mega Man Hip Hop? Random Thinks So5/17/07
By: Trees
When I think back to my early video game days, one of my favorites was the Mega Man series. How can anyone forget that little blue dude with the arm cannon. One thing that always stood out to me when playing those games was the music, definitely advanced for it's time and on some futuristic 8-bit electro shit. When I heard that Philly native artist/producer Random was dropping a project with nothing but samples from the Mega Man series, I knew I had to get the word out. The album, titled Mega Ran, features samples from the NES classic with Random flipping them in ways that only he can. "I just wanted to do something different, so far away from what I had done in the past. Mega Man was my favorite game series ever, and I loved the music. I decided to step into the Mega Man character. It's pretty funny, silly, and entertaining, but it's good music. Fans of the videogame series will enjoy it." 2007 marks the 20 year anniversary of the birth of the Mega Man franchise. The first Mega Man game released in December 1987 on the NES, and was praised for its colorful graphics and intuitive gameplay mechanics. Mega Man has quite the following, and Random knows he can't let the fans down. "It's gonna be a wild ride...The music on it is really diverse. Fans of every musical genre will be able to vibe with it...Hip-Hop, Rock, Reggae, you name it." Collaborators on the project include RAHM Nation producer DN3 (The Call, Rapademics), Domingo (Big Pun, KRS-ONE), videogame rock band The Megas, nerd rap sensation YTCracker, Problem Child, Samik (G-Unit and Ruff Ryders producer), and many more. "Mega Ran" will release on June 19th, 2007 and will be a free download at www.randomsblogs.blogspot.com, www.myspace.com/bigran215, and www.rahmnation.org. A special limited version of the album in CD form, with bonus tracks and additional artwork will be available for sale at RAHM Nation's website. Check it out when it drops.

Souls Of Mischief New LP Produced Entirely By… PRINCE PAUL?!?5/3/07
By: Trees
It ain't 93 no more and the Souls Of Mischief crew are not fucking around when it comes to their legacy. A-Plus, Opio, Tajai, and Phesto, who form the Souls, recently embarked on a national tour promoting solo projects and hyping what seems to be a productive and landmark year for the crew. UGHH.com was in the building, cameras rolling when they kicked it off in Atlanta. While the groundbreaking journalism of a young UGHH staffer, VanStylez delved deep into the minds of the members, they were all very tight-lipped about releasing any information about their new LP. When VanStylez pressed them during the interview to at least reveal the producers, the crew seemed suspiciously excited and very secretive about releasing that information. Being the hip hop nerd that I am, I figured why not investigate a little. I called in some favors and learned that the new Souls Of Mischief album will be produced entirely by one of my favorite producers, the legendary PRINCE PAUL! While no release date has been given, the crew did say it is coming out this year. So be on the look out for that.

Bomshot Locked Up5/3/07
By: Trees
The ever controversial MC known as Bomshot is on ice for two years. That's right, the man responsible for contributing to one half of Devil'z Rejects and dropping the Kill ‘Em All Mixtape has officially violated his probation and has begun serving a two year sentence on a number of different charges. The violation stemmed from an incident where Bomshot was pulled over by Boston Police Dept in a vehicle with a screwdriver sticking out of the ignition. An associate of Bomshot quoted him as saying, "I'm not too worried about it though, it's good publicity for the album I'm dropping with Holocaust in 2009".

Common's Finding Forever Dropping Soon5/3/07
By: The Dance
New information has surfaced about Common's upcoming album entitled Finding Forever. A private listening party was recently held in Los Angeles for about 15 people with Kanye and Common included in the attendance. 11 tracks off of the new album were played and Common and Kanye talked about each song after it was played. Here's the short version (these tracks are not in album order):

1. "The People" ft. Dwele, prod. by Kanye West
2. "Black Maybe" ft. Bilal, prod. by Kanye West
3. "I Want You", prod. by Will.I.Am
4. "Southside" ft. Kanye West, prod. by Kanye West
5. "Drivin Me Wild" ft. Lily Allen, prod. by Kanye West
6. "So Far To Go" ft. D'Angelo, prod. by J Dilla
7. "Break My Heart", prod. by Kanye West
8. "The Game" ft. DJ Premier, prod. by Kanye West
9. "Start The Show" ft. Kanye West, prod. by Kanye West
10. "Misunderstood", prod. by Devo Springsteen
11. "Forever Begins", prod. by Kanye West.

As you can see, the vast majority of the songs are produced by Kanye, and he's also the only rapper featured on the album so far (Common says that he's still looking to put more tracks on the album). Some other things to note are that "So Far To Go" is also on Dilla's The Shining, and Devo Springsteen is Kanye's cousin and worked with Kanye to produce "Diamonds (from Sierra Leone)" and "Too High" for John Legend, super. This album looks like it has potential to be even better that BE, and Common's branching out even more than before working with artists like Lily Allen (his version of Kanye's Adam Levine). Finding Forever is slated for a July 10th release and I'm pretty excited. How can I tell? My nipples are hard, of course.

Beasties Coming Back5/3/07
By: Trees
I fucking love the Beastie Boys. Always original, always dropping gems. Even their last album which most considered to be a flop, I still bump (and fuck all of you who don't consider these cats lyrical). But enough about me, the new Beastie Boys LP The Mix Up is an all instrumental affair, and before you get all In Sound From Way Out on me, let me explain about the joint a little further with a Mike D quote I jacked from Pitchfork; "Any record we make is always about combining different ideas or different influences we have, and then with this record, it's an instrumental album. There are no vocals, no samples. We played everything. But as different as that might be from To the 5 Boroughs, it's equally different from instrumental songs we've done before, like the ones that were on The In Sound From Way Out! That was kind of one direction and this one different influences, like Public Image Ltd., Gang of Four, the Slits, Killing Joke." There are plans for a different version of "The Mix Up" that will feature collabos from a whos-who of modern MCs / Vocalists. Somewhere UGHH CEO Quest Walder is reading this thinking, "I could be A&Ring this entire project right now."

Kool Keith Drops A New Gem With ADMIRAL CRUMPLE!??5/3/07
By: Trees
In our ten years of operation, the internet slums that are the world famous UndergroundHipHop.com message boards have produced a startling array of degenerates, low-lifes, and miscreants as well as super-producers, highly successful record label heads, and artists. The boards have been a haven for a heavy staple of artists over the years, most posting under aliases or lurking and reading the opinions of fans and haters. Since he began posting on UGHH a few years ago, one man has seemed to endure a seemingly endless tirade of hate, loathing, and even utter disgust for his music and existence. He has relentlessly put himself out there, often leaving some people to wonder if his whole career as a musician was nothing more than a joke. No we're not talking about Slug (fuck you trees), I'm talking about the message board anomaly known as Admiral Crumple. Personally, I can't knock the dudes persistence, but hey what the fuck do I know? Recently the Crumpster sent me an email touting his new collabo track with none other than Kool Keith which will appear on his new album dropping later this year. Here it is:

"Admiral Crumple will release his 7th album called The Next Night on Aug 20 2007. There will be one track featuring Kool Keith. Admiral Crumple will also be referencing alot of emcees/ people who showed him disrespect over the past while. Who will he be talking about? You''ll have to wait and see! Check out myspace.com/admiralcrumple for his free mixtape with DJ Law entitled Records and Scissors and the single for his upcoming album "They Said..." Admiral describes his music as Hardcore, dark and trying to be clever. "The Next Night" also features the emcee Exlib and producer Dr.Strange from Queens, New York City." To check in on the constant Crumple discussion and to join in head on over to the UGHH Hip Hop Message Board.

Lupe Fiasco: One Cool Ass Muhf**ka5/3/07
By: Trees
After we interviewed The Pack and they alluded to the fact that Lupe doesn't even skateboard I lost all respect for the dude. Then I came across a newswire article stating that the Chi-town native is desperately trying to reunite Pink Floyd to play on his new album. Respect restored. Billboard magazine got the scoop backstage at Coachella where Lupe was quick not to divulge too many details on his new LP, Cool which he says is dropping Oct. 31st of this year (sure). While production on the project is in it's infant stages and many guest spots aren't lined up there's also a "top secret" project in the works with "another superstar rapper and someone who is a rapper/producer". Stay Tuned.
