The Bong Is Cracking6/30/04
By: Food Stamp
After 12 years of making dope music the run seems over for Cypress Hill. DJ Muggs, on his site (www.djmuggs.com), announced that Till Death would be the last collaborative effort for the group although they will be pursuing solo ventures. In response, B Real offered his side, "Whatever happens I can pretty much promise you that we'll all keep contributing music to all of you out there regardless if together as Cypress Hill or individually through our own projects. I can't speak for anyone else in the group so I won't, but I can say it's been a good trip through the good and bad times and I don't regret it for one minute. I don't want y'all freakin' out on what was posted on Mugg's site because I'm gonna hold it down for you regardless…Nothing happened here on the road to bring this sudden decision"(from www.brealonline.com). Now who will kids smoke to?

Zone - Puttin' In Work6/30/04
By: Food Stamp
It seems like years since J-Zone dropped his coveted album Music For Tu Madre, an LP that shed light on the emcee/producer and the Old Maid Collective. Oh wait, it has been some years (five to be exact), and now it's almost time for his 5th installment A Job Ain't Nuthin But Work which is slated to hit stores on September 14th. Following the suite of his four prior joints A Job Ain't Nuthin But Work will feature the exclusive production of Zone himself. The album's premier single is about to drop too (July 20) "A Friendly Game Of Basketball" b/w "$poiled Rotten" that features the verbal tenacity of Demigodz crew member Celph Titled. Vocal guest shots on the LP come courtesy of Al-Shid, Dick $tallion, and an interesting pairing with Devin The Dude (whose album To Tha X-Treme will be dropping on July 7).

Collision Of Comics6/30/04
By: Food Stamp
Although some may argue it, but there are not too many underground artists out there making as much noise and music as MF DOOM and Dangermouse. Mouse, whose success primarily stems from his creation the Grey Album, and MF DOOM have been working on their project Dangerdoom. Although this isn't breaking news the interesting part is that the project will be loosely tied to the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim program. Given the AS crew's penchant for hip-hop this should come as no surprise. Many blanks need to be filled in as typically this sort of music would be used as background beats for commercials (just ask Madlib). Although no release date has been given, Dangermouse himself has confirmed the project (and its near completion). If you want a taste you can hear DOOM and DM together on Price Po's 7" singe "Social Distortion." It will be interesting to see how the combination of superhero and supervillain will go.

Reconstruction The Isley Brothers6/30/04
By: Food Stamp
If you listen to hip-hop then you listen to the Isley Brothers (although you may not know it). One of the more sampled groups in hip-hop is the Isley duo who has pushed out such classics as "That Lady Pt. 1" (and Pt. 2), "Summer Breeze," and "Between The Sheets." Well now the aforementioned joints, as well as seven others, will be remixed by some of the game's best. The Isley Brothers have enlisted the talent of ?uestLove, De La Soul, Will.I.Am, the Mighty Mos Def, and Raphael Saadiq to remix their classics on The Isley Brothers- Taken To The Next Phase (Reconstructions). Although this isn't going to be in stores until August 10th you can expect a four-track single ("Take Me to the Next Phase," "Between the Sheets," "Summer Breeze" and "That Lady") to shake your buns before that. Although the album features primarily remixes there are some complete reconstructions that should be noted, mainly being Mos Def's ode "Beauty In The Dark (Groove With You)," which lends an entirely new sound to the classic.

More Trouble On The Way6/30/04
By: Food Stamp
After selling more than 360,000 copies of To The 5 Boroughs in the first week the Beastie Boys are aiming to do a little more damage. Building upon the commercial success of "Ch-Check It Out" will be their new single "Triple Trouble" for which they've already completed a video for. The video is directed by Nathanial Hornblower who is MCA's uncle, so look for this creative ditty to hit the airwaves soon. Be sure that if you're in America this is the only dose that you will get from the crew as the group will be hitting Japan August 7-8 for their last scheduled tour slots (with only five stops in America thus far).

The Art of Rhyming6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
Several years ago mainstream America got a chance to see what turntablism was about through the documentary Scratch. With that film in the can and intricate looks into both graf and breaking already completed it is just natural for a documentary of rhyming to bless the screens. Well it's been accomplished with critical acclaim by Kevin Fitzgerald's (DJ Organic) Freestyle; The Art of Rhyme. He started filming a few years ago in Los Angeles at the popular café The Good Life and from there the film progressed and is now hitting screens everywhere. It features many popular battles and the likes of Mos Def, Wordsworth, Kool Herc, Lord Finesse, Black Thought, Craig G, Supernatural, Jurassic 5, Freestyle Fellowship, 2Mex, Juice and more. This is an introspective look at the life and nuances of being a freestyle emcee. Make sure to check this when it comes to your city because it is a sell-out every time.

Want Some Good Music?6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
Although it has been a couple years since Lone Catalysts have dropped an album there is no doubt that they've stayed busy with plenty of solo ventures and side projects. Well expect to hear from the group soon with their new release Good Music which should be available this fall. Look for the much more of the classic jazzy style that Rawls puts down and Sands's penetrable flow as well as microphone guests Wordsworth, El Da Sensei, Thes One, Lil Sci, Donte of Mood, Piakhan, Jonell and much more. Also, the group is releasing a new single on August 24, "En La Ciudad" b/w "The Ultimate" which also features a Kev Brown remix of "The Ultimate."

Burning With A Vengeance 6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
After the Arsonists fell apart each member went their own way to find a home and luckily vocal machinist Q-Unique landed at Uncle Howie Records (home to Non Phixion, Immortal Techniqe, and E-Dot). With the success of several singles released on the same imprint Q has geared up nicely for the drop of his new album Vengeance Is Mine which will be hitting stores on October 5th. Although Q-Unique will be handling some production he's also enlisted the likes of Ju Ju and Context of the Beatnuts as well as Necro (who also lends some vocal support). Guest shots come courtesy of ILL BILL, Goretex, E-Dot, and Swel 79. Should we expect any cameos from Uncle Howie himself? Be on the look for Q and the rest of the Goons on this year's Warped Tour on the Code Of Tha Cutz stage.

Fill In The Blanks With A Donkey Punch6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
After the success of their last collective effort Something's Gotta Give, it looks like the tandem of Mr. Len and Kimani are working on a new Roosevelt Franklin LP. Titled either Fill in the Blanks or Donkey Punch (or even some sort of combination) there are hopes that this could be as interesting as their premier. Also, this may be the last album that they do together (as well as maybe Kimani's last effort), but look for this to hit stores in either October or February.

Makin' Moves Imperial Style6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
It looks like the Atlanta duo Vintage Imperial has taken some steps to get in the sauce. Most recently they've teamed up with the Illadelph's own Grand Agent on an untitled track that will appear on their new single "Amazing" b/w "Out to Get Ya" (which are both off of their Synergy LP) slated to drop in August. One half of the group, Kid Kaos, has recently finished up a joint produced by none other then Chi Town's Kanye West. Although the track is only getting burn in the Hotlanta area, "Like You Do" will be getting some distribution and should be available soon.

Koresh, Manson…Make Room For Kamachi6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
It's been some years in the making but finally Chief Kamachi's long-awaited debut LP is upon us. Cult Status will be hitting stores July 27 and is packing more heat than a Illadelph steak n' cheese. The Philly-based Kamachi tags up with Guru (on "The Best"), Mr. Eon and members from his group The Ju Ju Mob (that consists of Reef the lost Cauze, State Store and Pitt's Charon Don) and is courtesy of Good Hands Records and Eastern Conference Records. The sonic headnods come from State Prop's S.Dot (who lends 3 beats), Might Mi, E. Dan and DJ Huggy (six tracks), and DJ Kwestion. Also, The Ju Ju Mob is currently finishing up a full-length that should be out later this year, but you can get a sample on the Eastern Conference All Stars 4 which is due this September. So, after getting tastes of Kamachi over the last few years it is now time to get a full meal.

The Rapper's Rappers6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
There is no doubt that Nas is an emcee that other emcees envy, and, due to his recent emergence and successes of Revolutionary Vol. 1 and 2, Immortal Technique has been granted similar comparisons. Both emcees can narrative rap, drop proper metaphors, and garner attention for some of their political convictions (albeit Tech is a bit more indoctrinated) and now they have apparently collabed. Although details are sparse the story goes that after hearing Tech that Nas was impressed and approached him about a collab. Furthermore, the track is said to be produced by the Soul Brother Pete Rock. This should be a track to hold heads over until the release of Revolutionary Vol. 3 which is in the works, but also his new LP Middle Passage set to drop early 2005. Also look out for Tech to hit a city near you on this year's Warped Tour (check local listings).

99 Problems and a Bitch Is One6/22/04
By: Food Stamp
Over the last couple weeks a little video has been circulating of Jay-Z supposedly mushing a woman backstage. Although websites and forums alike have speculated and hinted, finally the rumor mill has gone dry. It was confirmed several days ago by Roc-A-Fella Records that Hov was just messing around with a close friend and marketing executive. The video, which is nearly 5-years old, is taken from Back Stage a film that contains footage from Jig's Hard Knock Life Tour.

Snooping Around Neptune6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
Now that the Neptunes's imprint Star Trak has left Arista and grouped with the omnipotent Interscope Records they've made some big moves. The first is signing up Snoop Dogg for an album, which will be one of the label's first two releases (and also be released through Snoop's Doggystyle imprint). Chad Hugo of the Neptunes said to MTV, "We're trying to bring him back to the Chronic-era Snoop." Although the album is thus far untitled it's slated to drop by the end of the year. Hmm, wonder home many bricks of herb and gin and juice it will take to bring Snoop back to the "Chronic-era?"

More Venom From The Villain6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
Seriously, there is no other emcee/producer out there making more moves than MF DOOM. No wonder duke wears a mask… it's to cover up the bags under his eyes from excessive studio time (which can be easily remedied from good green or cucumber slices). Oh yeah, here's the lead: Blessing your speakers late this August will be Viktor Vaughn 2: Venomous Villain. Following up the success of the first Vaughn installment will be this little ditty that includes vocal partnerships with IZ-Real ("R.A.P. G.A.M.E."), Stronghold's Poison Pen ("Bloody Chain"), Mars Ill's Manchild, and a doomful pairing with Kool Keith ("Doper Skiller"). The beats will be laced by Dub L, DJ I.N.C., and Session 31 (obviously others too). Expect a good amount of cosmic verbal acrobatics from DOOM as well as ethereal beats from the aforementioned sonic-caretakers.

The Monsters Holding Strong6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
According to the Stronghold website it looks like the crew will be pairing up with the Monster Island Czars for a mega collab Strong Monsters. According to Poison Pen, "So far, we got C Rayz, MF Grimm, Breez Evahflowin, Lord Scotch, Poison Pen, Dana Dane and LIFE Long doin' some stuff." Although there is no release date for this collective barrage of musical artillery there has already been some inter-crew work between Poison Pen and GM Grimm for the Stronghold Mix CD Vol.2. A follow-up to their first mix is this joint out on Day By Day Entertainment and should be hitting you in the head in about three weeks. The mix will include exclusives from LIFE Long, Stelfindex, Poison Pen, Breez Evahflowin, Mic Terror, Immortal Technique, Swave Sevah, Apathy, Vast Aire, GM Grimm, Karniege, and C Rayz Walz. Also be on the look soon for C Rayz's Black Samurai LP out soon on Def Jux that features split production work form El-P and Belief.

Surviving In Severance6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
With the recent success of his new LP, Soul Survivor Vol. 2, Pete Rock has a lot of projects on his plate, but none of them will be with long-time partner C.L. Smooth. In a recent interview with AllHipHop.com the Soul Brother admitted that there had always been mild antagonism between him and his partner since people were always checking for Pete and not for C.L. When asked what it would take for him to reunite with Mecca the answer was, "Naw, it's not gonna work. Plain and simple." That is quite sad as both the couplings on SS Vol.2, "Appreciate" and "It's A Love Thing," were arguably two of the freshest joints on a Ziplock-fresh LP. Don't worry though since Pete has got a lot of projects in the mix that include funk compilations, mixtapes, a solo project with Pete actually rhyming, a reggae LP, and Soul Survivor Vol. 3 that we can expect in 2005.

A Double Loss For Shaq6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
Okay, you've probably already heard about this developing beef between Shaquille O'Neal and Skillz. Apparently stemming from a subliminal Shaq subjugation on Skillz's "Ghostwriter," Diesel recently attacked Skillz on a DJ Sickamore mixtape with little sumtin'-sumtin's like, "You the 4th best emcee from Virginia and guess what I don't f*ck with scrubs either/ matter of fact I don't know what you look like/ you be spitting metaphors like a geek Canibus book type."

Based on a fair assessment of the attempted verbal lashing and the Lakers's recent serving, Shaq is going to be in need of horse-pill Prozac. Even better is Skillz's interview response where he said, "I wouldn't even answer him back if he didn't think he could rap. This man thinks he's nice. He actually believes it! Nobody that's wack thinks that they're wack you know?...I'm on tour doing shows enjoying myself and come home to a Shaq diss? C'mon man...he needs to publicly apologize. Regan dies, Ray Charles passes away and now we gotta bury Shaq's rap career?" Maybe a possible one-liner will appear on the 2004 recap.

The Pudge Has Been Fudged For Organized Konfusion6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
Most of us (or old dudes like myself) can remember the tantalizing trio of Pharoahe Monch, Prince Po, and O.C. on "Fudge Pudge." The joint marked the premiere of O.C. on the mic and was the prelude to the Organized Konfusion that would be. The reintroduction was supposed to feature production from DJ Premier, Buckwild and Large Professor, but it's all turned to dust. Apparently the problem lies between O.C. and Po, "O.C. always had some hidden problem with me and he has to face those demons that make him so angry at a person who put him on his first record" (AllHipHop.com).

In similar news Po confirmed Pharoahe's signing with Shady Records. The beatboxer turned emcee will now be working with the likes of Dre, Em, and even the commercial gun-totin' likes of G-Unit. This should be interesting to say the least. Po can now focus on his Lex Records full-length The Slickness that is due later this month. The album will feature DOOM, Raekwon, and Rell with beats by J-Zone, Jemini and Madlib.

Porn Is Back!6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
For anybody out there who copped the Boston-based Porn Theatre Ushers's EP Sloppy Seconds or were lucky enough to grab their "Me and Him" single will be happy to know that their debut LP will be hitting stores on July 27. The duo, comprised of producer/DJ Mister Jason and the always hysterical emcee Nabo Rawk, are hitting heads with the 25-track deep Taxachusetts out on Detonator. After a decent hiatus due to a break up, the duo has been back for nearly a year and have been eagerly trying to finish the LP. Guest shots from Beantown's Edan and Esoteric combined with the always catchy PTU beats/lyrics should have this album selling well. The group will also be spending three days on Warped Tour blessing Jersey, Philly and NYC, but what about the Foxboro session guys?

Altering Perceptions6/16/04
By: Food Stamp
Scheduled to come out on October 18 of this year is the Perceptionists's (Akrobatik and Mr. Lif) first full-length Black Dialogue. Sources say that the album will be finished by the first of July so there shouldn't be any b.s. around a timely release. The LP will feature beats from El Producto with rhymes by Humpty as well as WWE (Hip Hop) Superstar Jon Cena. Although Ak and Lif have been making noise since "The Fat Shit" their recent single "Medical Aid" has been getting them some buzz (also look out for a song about the Patriots on the LP) and it's about time that this album is getting dropped.
