De La Stays Grinding7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
Before De La Soul releases the third of their AOI trilogy they'll be dropping their 8th album entitled The Grind Date. The album, due out September 28th on Sanctuary Urban Records Group (headed by Mathew Knowles, Beyonce's father) will feature microphone math from Common, MF DOOM, Carl Thomas, Spike Lee, Bonz Malone, Ghostface Killah, and Sean Paul. Also, the boardwork will be handled by a hodgepodge of producers, an a-list that includes Madlib, Dave West, Jay Dee, and Jake One. Since the group has been hitting fans off with music for 15 years it's only suiting that they drop an album dedicated to the group's longevity in the "game." Furthermore, De La will be releasing a limited edition shoe with Nike called "De La Dunk" and will also be teaching a hip-hop class at NYU this fall.

Get Pre-Fixed On Necro7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
Keeping up on his promise to release 10 albums in 12 months, Psycho+Logical Records underlord Necro is dropping his own LP The Pre-Fix For Death. Dropping the Ill Bill record and then the Necro produced Sabac and Mr. Hyde joints are just the start to the labels run or ear-bleeding hip-hop. Pre-Fix, which should prove to be just as interesting as any Necro release, boasting an interesting guest line-up. Necro has pulled together some of hip-hop's and metal's finest as the new cut features Jamey Jasta and Sean Martin (Hatebreed), #0 (Slipknot), Away (Voivod), Trevor Peres (Obituary), Dan Lilker (Nuclear Assault), Kid Joe, Mr. Hyde, Non-Phixion's Ill Bill, Goretex, and Sabac as well as the omnipresent appearance of Uncle Howie. Although Necro's website states a drop date of September 7th, he himself has confirmed a date to be September 21st.

KRS-One And Fam Defamed In Publicity Stunt7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
After Steve Breland of A&R website hiphopworld.net, in accordance with unknown rapper E.O.D.(who will be know as the "unknown rapper" for this article and is managed by Breland), released a press statement accusing the Blastmaster of complete shadiness, Kris and his camp have refuted the claims as a mere publicity stunt for the unknown rapper (under the "any press is press" ideology). According to Kris and his manager Meta4, the unknown rapper was never on tour with the KRS as the press release and "Criminal Minded 04" were merely stunts to get the unknown rapper's name out. Artists were trying out to tour with KRS and that they were to fund their own way throughout the process (which, according to the KRS camp, is all on video).

The real scoop on touring with KRS: Phryst Born, an artist who opened for Kris said, "Opening up for KRS-ONE was a wonderful experience. It was a learning experience…As a person, I like KRS-ONE as a person, his whole vibe. The knowledge that he holds is peace." Ishues, a member of a group called Attica Sounds who actually performed with Kris said, "It was a tremendous learning experience. It was an excellent opportunity to watch the best emcee to ever touch the microphone... I learned more on this tour than I have learned in my whole career as an emcee. As a direct result, it has given me a lot of industry attention."

KRS and his camp will be conducting a free event on Sunday August 8th in Miami, Florida called The 9 Elements Of The Hip-Hop Nation. The event focuses on emceein', deejayin', B-Boys/B-Girls, graffiti art, street knowledge, street language, street fashion, beatboxin', and street entrepreneurialism. The 9 Elements Summit is focused on uplifting the power of the hip-hop movement and is not caught up in any distractions that prevent hip-hoppers from unifying a potentially productive hip-hop nation. Also make sure to cop KRS-One's newest solo joint Keep Right.

Cauzing A Stir7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
In last week's battle at the 27th Annual Rock Steady Anniversary show, the big winner in the end was Philly's Reef The Lost Cauze. The battle, hosted by the native End Of The Week crew, featured four events in which Reef outrhmyed Kaze and Ayem Boogie in the vocal Olympics. This is the JuJu Mob member's 7th consecutive battle win and gives the emcee some hype for his new 11-track solo album The Stress Files out on Krush Unit. Reef has also been involved in finishing up the new JuJu Mob project, as well as Cauze & Effect, an album that features Reef and Side Effect (due this fall on Krush Unit). Furthermore, Reef has just inked an album deal with Good Hands Records (who've released Chief Kamachi's Cult Status and soon the new JuJu Mob CD) that will be called Feast Or Famine. Philly continuing to make moves…

Russell's Wife Arrested7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
This past Sunday (July 25) Kimora Lee Simmons (popular fashion designer, model, and oh yeah, hip-hop kingpin Russell Simmons's wife) was arrested on drug and traffic related charges in the driveway of her home in Saddle Brook, New Jersey. According to the officer, when he tried to pull Kimora over she proceeded to drive to her house where the eventual search took place (and was taped on by the estate's security cameras). Kimora was charged with eluding a police officer, possessing marijuana, careless driving, operating a vehicle while possessing a controlled substance, tail-gating and having a taillight out. According to the Simmons' attorney the search was illegal and they feel that the incident was another occurrence of racial profiling.

Finally Getting Some Shyne7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
It seems as if Shyne has been all over news sections lately. First, his album drop-date gets pushed back and then he disses 50 Cent from jail over the phone. Now, Def Jam is releasing Godfather Buried Alive on its original date August 10th rather than the pushback date of September 14th. The feeling was that if the album came out in September that it would get leaked, thus the powerhouse label decided not to wait until the impact that the second single could have possibly made. Shyne, who is still in jail- a sentence stemming from the P.Diddy shooting incident- has been garnering some publicity with his 50 diss where the rapper comes off as envious of 50's gangsta ascension. Although Shyne won't be touring any time soon, as he'll remain incarcerated until 2009, he has re-upped his status with the Kanye West produced single "More Or Less" and will be featured in an interview on ABC's "20/20."

Straight Truth7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
Since his inchoate appearance on De La Soul's "Stakes Is High (Remix)," Truth Enola has come a long way. He's released a handful of singles and has been featured on numerous collabs. What about a solo? Well, nine years after we got to hear the crooning raps of Truth we get a solo album from the man, 6 O'Clock Straight, due out on Solid Records. The album has already gained steam with the 12" release "Ain't Changed" which features De La Soul and Kutmasta Kurt. This NYC emcee's debut drops September 7th featuring production from Kurt, De La, Da Beatminerz, DJ Spinna, The Are, and Geology. Vocals are lent from associates Phife Dawg and Strong Island's De La Soul.

Q-Tip Gets Spiked7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
It looks as if Q-Tip will play a pivotal role in the new Spike Lee film She Hate Me. The film centers around a businessman who impregnates lesbians at a cost of $10,000. His ex-fiancé, who is nicknamed She Hate Me, morphs into his agent and attempts to pimp her ex-lover. Q-Tip plays the role of the donor's good friend, Veda Huff, who has too low of a sperm count to donate. In all interviews Tip seems excited about this film and the chance to work with Lee. Umm, what about the ATCQ reunion album?

Black August Lineup 7/28/04
By: Food Stamp
Most hip-hop heads either love or hate the "political" sub-genre of hip-hop, either criticizing its essence or praising its merit. Now, six years after its inception, the Malcom X Grassroots Movement has announced acts for its 7th annual Black August Celebration that takes place on August 8th at B.B. Kings Bar and Grill in NYC. Headlining this year's fundraiser (which aids political prisoners) will be Talib Kweli and Common, but will also feature Flo Brown, Saigon, Jean Grae along with other invited guests, while M1 of Dead Prez keeps things rolling as host. The Masta Not Done7/23/04
By: Food Stamp
Jay Z has made a lot of things popular these days and one, being of the utmost controversy, has been his retirement. In a similar vein it seems as if Masta Ace was ready to hang up the mic, but it's more of a business move and not a retirement while most likely Long Hot Summer will not be his last LP. Ace, whose statements about putting more energy into getting his M3 imprint off the ground rather than touring and recording, had some words construed and blown out of proportion. As a 16-year veteran Ace will not be hangin' up the mic but rather putting it aside. He will bless heads with his 5th solo effort that features Beatnuts, Jean Grae, Rahzel, Wordsworth and others and will be out August 3rd. Albeit his focus has changed, Ace is proof positive that this art is not disposable.

A Blast From The Master7/19/04
By: Food Stamp
Despite all the venom that Kris has spit over the years about appreciating your fellow peeps and respect and all, it looks like the Blastmaster is beginning to embody a sheer paradox. E.O.D., a rapper from the Bronx and who has been touring with Kris, has spoken out vehemently about the Teacher. The unkind words stem from a recent incident that took place after a stop at a Richmond nightclub, Nanci Rayguns. After the show ended, according to E.O.D., KRS just split leaving about 12 dancers and rappers without their money or transportation. "His people are preying on hungry artists because they know hungry artists are like obedient slaves," E.O.D. says. "They do whatever it takes to get put on!" In response to this whole incident E.O.D. recorded a track called "Criminal Minded ‘04," where the emcee attacks his idol in a rhythmic diatribe.

The album will also feature the Boot Camp's very own Sean Price along with the rest of the JMT fam. Floats Like A Butterfly…Melts In Your Mouth7/19/04
By: Food Stamp
Although many may argue that Eminem is a puppet who has been put forth onto the hip-hop marketing chopping block, there's no doubt that he is making moves. After recently announcing that he'll be in charge of his own satellite radio station, Em has also shed light on his newest film. He will be playing the part of undefeated 22-year-old Ukrainian-born Jewish boxing phenomenon Dmitry Salita in a film tentatively titled Golden Boy and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Watch out Ja Rule ‘cause Em recruited Lennox Lewis's old trainer, Emanuel Steward, to get him into shape. Steward said to Mtv.com, "He's improved enormously. He's aggressive, a real slugger. He moves a lot like Muhammad Ali." Hmmm. Let's just hope that he can last longer in the ring than he did with Britney Murphy.

Uniting Through Hip-Hop7/19/04
By: Food Stamp
Based on the large success that was last year's Hip-Hop Peace and Unity Festival (that was in Boston), event planners have announced two dates and a line-up for this year's festivities. The first stop will be in Toronto, Ontario August 13-15, while the second landing will stay true in last year's home of Boston, Massachusetts on October 9th. The aim of the event is to introduce the audience to both socially conscious and positive rap and to, well, unite people. This year's performers will include Erick Sermon, KRS-One, Skillz, Large Professor, Royce Da 5'9, CL Smooth, Jeru The Damaja, Soulive, and other local artists. The festival will eventually be packaged into a nice DVD, but if you're curious you can pick up last year's DVD documentation at our online store. Eminem Goes Satellite7/14/04
By: Slang
The man who once told us, "Radio won't even play my jams!" is about to play whatever the hell he wants. Along with Shady Records VP Paul Rosenberg and Interscope CEO Jimmy Iovine, Eminem will executive produce his very own channel on Sirus Satellite Radio. Eminem claims that the station will not only feature artists from Shady Records, but the best artists from all around (Benzino, maybe?). Beginning this fall, Eminem's channel will be home to a show by DJ Green Lantern of Shady Records, a specialty show hosted by Mr. Shady himself, as well as live interviews and exclusives from a variety of artists. "I can't wait to start dropping new material, exclusive tracks and uncensored hip-hop," says Em. Eminem's 4th commercial LP (still untitled) is also scheduled to drop later this year.

Continuing To Rock Steady7/14/04
By: Food Stamp
Despite craploads of turmoil and strife within the confines of NYC, the 27th Rock Steady Crew Anniversary free show has a home in Newark, NJ (Military Park to be exact). Although NYC has deemed the day "Rock Steady Day" the crew couldn't get an NYC outdoor venue for their historically violence-free festival. The show will start at 1 PM on Saturday July 24 and will feature performances from Erick Sermon, Black Moon, Masta Ace, Beatnuts, Tony Touch, Punch n' Words, Pumpkinhead, Casual and Domino (of Hiero), DJ Red Alert, Encore feat. Lady Bug Mecca, and QN5 Music All Stars. Also, the show will feature the Em Cee challenge and I.T.F. Finals.
If that isn't enough for you then check out Sunday's lineup of Black Sheep, Freddy Foxx, Rahzel & DJ JS1, Thirstin Howell III, Z-MAN, A Wolf, DJ Devious, Planet Asia, and Tony Touch. The show takes place on July 25 at Crobar at 3 PM and has a $25 admission fee. Please check out www.rocksteadycrew.com for more info on the other nights.

"Why?" Edit Jada7/14/04
By: Food Stamp
Put aside some of Jada's most recent troubles and you have a chart hit in Kiss Of Death. One of the bangers off of the album is "Why?," a joint where Kiss takes time to question the Bush Administration's role in the events of the 9/11 attacks, but lately the track has been drawing some negative attention (mainly in the form of censorship). One of the lines in the cut, "Why did Bush knock down the towers?," has been edited out by some radio stations as well as MTV. Coupled with tension felt by Fahrenheit 9/11 and now the street savvy Jada, Mr. W will remain answering questions. Damn you Michael Powell!

Mining With Static7/14/04
By: Food Stamp
There is no doubt that Da Beatminerz have been doing their thing proper for some time now and have, since their Enta Da Stage days, been trying to elevate both their game and the game in general. Coming courtesy of the five-man crew (Evil Dee, Mr. Walt, Baby Paul, Rich Black, and Chocolate Ty), but primarily the brothers Walt and Dee, will be their newest musical soundscape Fully Loaded With Static which will hit the shelves in October on Coptic Records. Similar to their lackluster Rawkus release, Brace 4 Impak, their newest collective will feature verbals from Black Moon, Charlie 2na, Wordsworth, KRS-One, Jean Grae, and The Last Emperor along with a slew of others.

Pay-Per-Roots7/14/04
By: Food Stamp
With the virginal release of The Tipping Point (this week) coupled with some major touring (Okayplayer Tour), The Roots have been making hella buzz. Caught in the maze of commercial pleasure and underground allegiance, The Tipping Point attempts to carefully balance both elements. Recently, the Philly-based group announced that they have prepared a Pay-Per-View special entitled "The Roots Presents" and will be available on your screen in October. The special was recorded on June 10 when they performed in front of an invitation only crowd at NYC's Webster Hall and features joints from their new album and entire catalog. The special will also feature performances from fellow tourmates Skillz, Jean Grae, Young Gunz, Martin Luther, Mobb Deep and more. And, for all you techno-wizards out there, the special was recorded in Hi-Def and mastered in 5.1 surround sound.

The Villain Losing Some Face7/14/04
By: Food Stamp
Let's just take a minute to thank Turntable Lab and their affiliated label Money Studies for reissuing some of MF DOOM's long lost Fondle ‘Em singles "Dead Bent/Doomsday" as well as a 6-track KMD instrumental EP. The bulk of the thanking lies in the fact that these will no longer run you $40 or more on Ebay (you can cop ‘em here at UGHH.COM). Now that we've given thanks you may be wondering why you've been having trouble getting a copy of Doomsday or any of the Special Herbs with Dr. Doom on the cover. Stan Lee/Marvel Enterprises served DOOM a cease and desist order which basically means that any cd/vinyl with Dr. Doom on the cover must be removed from commerce. Given DOOM's recent buzz/success it's no wonder that he got busted for using Lee's original image. Marvel even went after pictures of DOOM with the mask on, but it was ruled that it did no harm to the original work. In accordance, Shaman Work will be re-releasing Special Herbs 4,5,6 instrumental 2LP with a 7" 45 remix rendition of Madvillain's "One Beer." Wonder if Jean Grae will be Marvel's next victim…
