Skeletons Out The Closet7/27/05
By: Trees
Adam12, one half of Philly underground rap crew the Dept. Of Rec. just dropped his debut solo LP, 'Skeletons' this month and already the underground is buzzing with praise for the former Arrakis Records MC. The record release party, held this past week in Philly proved that the Arrakis fan base is still strong in the state. A packed venue as well as a surprise screening of Adam12's new video for 'Contemplations', sent the crowd home happy. The new album, 'Skeletons' embodies not only Adam12's past experiences but also encompasses the elements necessary in the making a true hip hop gem. Production from Decypher and Caliph Now of 420, Stape Mega, and Stress of Krush Unit Inc. ensure that this LP will be knocking. Throw in a guest appearance from underground phenomenon and fellow Philly mic rocker Reef The Lost Cauze to round out the project and you got yourself another solid Pennsylvania hip hop product. Pick up the album at UGHH when it drops.

Cassidy Comes Equipped7/24/05
By: VanStylez
Can't knock Cassidy's hustle after a witness testified at a preliminary hearing Tuesday that he had originally lied to the boys in blue when he fingered Cassidy for the murder of a 22 year-old during an April 15th shootout / ambush in Philly. Apparently Cassidy & his two comrades had listened to King Tee's "Ruff Rhymes" too many times as kids, and according to police were carrying .45 and .40 caliber handguns, 9 mm pistols, AK47 rifles and 7.62 mm rifles at the time of the shooting (never mind the three victims being unarmed). Every part of my conspiracy ridden subconscious tells me this witness was given a little chrome tipped coaxing to reconsider his testimony. Paranoid ponderings aside, prosecutors have been given some more time to analyze ballistic evidence and another evidence hearing has been set for August 16.

K.I.M. Wants M.A.F.I.A. Green7/24/05
By: VanStylez
It seems Lil' Kim can't get enough of the court system lately considering she filed a lawsuit against former Junior Mafia cohort Lil' Cease Monday, temporarily barring him from releasing the spill-all DVD, "The Chronicles of Junior M.A.F.I.A. Part II: Reloaded." Apparently the DVD which is currently in purgatory pending a hearing later this month, features some tasty tidbits concerning Kim's recent perjury trial, with Cease, who corroborated Kim's false statements on the stand, casting some light on the conspiracy. In addition to throwing the monkey wrench between Cease and his dreams of balling like back in Biggie's day, Kim's also seeking six million in damages, saying she didn't give Cease the green light to use her name and five foot frame to endorse the video. Damn! Between Kim's lawsuit and Cease running off at the mouth for the world to see, these two sure gotta lotta bark for both being Lil' (laugh track kicks in). While I seriously doubt the diva with an upcoming album titled "The Naked Truth" has much to hide, I admire her foresight in planning some post-prison cushioning for her Prada.

Qthousan5 @ Rocksteady Weekend7/22/05
By: Trees
After a year absence from performing at the Rocksteady Annual Anniversary Show, the QN5 crew returns to the stage to bless the baby blue schoolers with the Qn5 Megashow held July 30, 2005 @ B.B. Kings in NYC. The show, which is headlined by Rass Kass also features the likes of Tonedeff, Pack FM, Session, and the Cunninlynguists. This is all of course part of QN5's massive marketing plan for this year involving the releases of several of the label's top tier artists including, Tonedeff (‘Archetype' out now), Session (the ‘Spicasso' LP coming later this year) and Cunninlynguists (new album ‘A Piece Of Strange' due out this fall). While the show is not officially part of the Rocksteady lineup it is safe to assume that many of the head nodders in the audience are attendees of the massive B-Boy event held every year in the big apple. This is sure to be another classic show from the QN5 family. Do not miss it!

A Nation Of Bootleggers7/20/05
By: Trees
The highly anticipated new Public Enemy LP, 'Rebirth Of A Nation', has officially been pushed back to January 2006. The album which was slated to drop on August 23rd on Guerilla Funk Records has fallen victim to rampant internet bootlegging and according to the publicist at Guerilla Funk, the album was pushed back to accommodate PE's promotion schedule while they drop another LP on a different record label this fall. The extra time given to release "Rebirth" only adds fuel to the rumors that the album will be given a complete overhaul. In the mean time, PE fans should check for their new single 'Can't Hold Us Back' featuring Paris, Kam, and Dead Prez, available now at UGHH.

A Chemical Release7/19/05
By: Trees
The good news from the laboratory is that the Cut Chemist has finally gone to work on concocting his debut LP, ‘The Audiences' Listening'. The album features influences far beyond the funk 45's and hip hop classics Cut Chemist is known for thrashing his needles over. According to the man himself, the listener can actually feel his thought process as he is digging through the crates creating the album. Chemist also took the record internationally and recorded part of it with a Brazilian samba band in a small town near the Amazon. Describing the record, Cut Chemist elaborated stating, "It's a little schizophrenic actually. Anywhere I go, I end up taking a piece back with me and incorporating it musically." As if Brazil wasn't foreign enough for the man, he also traveled to an actual studio to record most of the LP. Cut Chemist, a self trained master of the MPC, found himself recording in front of a computer screen for the first time in his life. "I was computer illiterate for a lot of years, and couldn't really find anybody to help me," he says, " I figured out slowly how to do certain things and just gradually taught myself the ins and outs." The album, ‘The Audiences' Listening' is due out this fall.

Teknological Advancement7/18/05
By: Paul Maul
‘Hi-Teknology Vol. 2' is slated to be the title of master producer Hi-Tek's upcoming collabo album. He is calling this project "a hip hop unification album". That is almost an understatement with a guest list that reads Mos Def, Snoop Dogg, Raphael Saadiq, long time partner Talib Kweli, and a lot of unexpected surprises. "I've got some collaborations you wouldn't normally get," says the long time producer who has worked with all of the above mentioned artists as well as Busta Buss, 50 Cent, D12, Game, and G-Unit. With so much negativity and violence surrounding the hip hop world today Hi-Tek wants to send a positive message with this upcoming album, which is GREATLY needed. Recent articles have been popping up about many urban clubs and venues refusing to book hip hop acts due to potential violent outcomes. That is a shame. Hip hop shows should be a time for like minded folks to come together and party, appreciate good music, and show love for people who are making this culture grow. Hip hop shows are not to show that you are hard and to start beefs. Hi-Tek understands this and his upcoming album should be embraced for bringing positivity back to hip hop. Remember folks, thugs are not hip hop MC's, they are rappers. Pump the beats and squash the beefs.

Free O.C.!!7/14/05
By: Trees
No the dude didn't get locked up. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for his new album. Yep, the D.I.T.C. member's incredible import LP 'Starchild' has officially been shelved and a domestic release will never see the light of day. Why has this travesty occurred you ask? Well it seems the LP is the latest victim of that mean old sample clearance monster. Several samples, including one from the recently acquitted Michael Jackson, were not officially cleared in the U.S.A. In response to this tragic turn of events Grit Records recently announced they would be giving their entire stock of this album away for FREE to the first 250 O.C. fans to email the label. Of course, the entire stock disappeared in two days. But why would a label simply give away an album that is sure to draw serious scrilla on the collector's scene in a few months? Mahlon Williams, President of Grit Records, believes in the quality of the album so strongly that he feels it would be a travesty to deny any O.C. fan the chance to hear the album. He recently reiterated his position to me stating, "We are a little disappointed by the decisions of 'powerless people who themselves hold a position of power' to strong-arm us into sitting on this album and dealing with them on some 'operational matters'. I figure people need to hear (Starchild) at all costs. Period." Apparently Grit also plans on re-working this album, adding different tracks and re-doing some old ones with sample issues. The new version will be released as an entirely new LP and will hopefully be released before the end of 2005. And don't fret if you haven't picked up a copy of Starchild yet or missed out on the free ones, UGHH still has a few left for sale- but they are definitely going fast.

Just Cauze7/13/05
By: Trees
After arguably outshining every member of the Ju Ju Mob on the enormously successful Black Candles LP, fans of Reef the Lost Cauze have been clamoring to hear more from the up and coming rhyme selector. Luckily we all won't have to wait long. The Cauze knows his skills are in high demand and has a plate full of projects dropping this summer to the wet the appetites of his fans. First up, a new 12 inch entitled, ‘Fair One', produced by Mighty Mi and featuring a guest spot from none other than Boot Camp soldier Sean Peeeeeee! The hype around this record is crazy and many are already saying that it could be the underground hit of the summer. After that, Reef shows up on the LONG awaited nuclear bomb of an LP from the Army of the Pharaohs FINALLY coming out this summer on Babygrande. And these projects are all of course leading up to his brand new LP, ‘Feast or Famine', dropping this fall on Good Hands Records. The man is putting in work, so support The Cauze.

Lil' Kim Jumps Off To The Big House7/7/05
By: Paul Maul
Well it looks like the Queen Bee is heading for the clink. Kimberly Jones, better known to the public as Grammy Award winner Lil' Kim was sentenced to one year and one day for perjury and conspiracy. Many people feel the rapper escaped a stiff prison sentence after telling the judge she was a "God-fearing, good person", who regretted lying to a federal grand jury about a shootout outside a Manhattan radio station. Before the sentence was handed out, Judge Gerald Lynch grilled Kim saying "You sat right next to me there and stared in the eyes of thejurors, and you tried to charm them and you tried to fake them out,". With her voice breaking Kim responded with, "At the time I thought it was the right thing to do, but I now know it was wrong,". Well folks, what have we learned from all this? When you lie to a grand jury you get burned. Can rappers please stop going to JAIL? If you are rich enjoy it. Take it from me Kim, there are gonna be alot of BIG women who are gonna wanna "rumble with the bee", so watch your back. There's no Botox in the big house.

Special Teamz In The Starting Lineup7/6/05
By: JayCeeOh
Beantown rap legend EDO.G, has joined forces with rap veteran Jaysaun (of the Kreators), and up and coming microphone terror, Slaine (D.M.S.) to create Boston's newest rap super group, ‘Special Teamz'. The group brings together the dirty boroughs of Roxbury, Mattapan, and South Boston, three neighborhoods plagued with violence, drugs, and racial tension for decades. The production line up on the S.T. debut LP is crazy, as it includes some of the biggest names in real hip hop. I'm talking DJ Premier, Pete Rock, A+ (of Hiero), Jake One, Arabian Knight, Good Will, and Insight to name a few. The first single, produced by Primo, is set to drop in August. Definitely be on the look out for that and for more on these cats check out Slaine's new mixtape, 'The White Man Is The Devil Vol. 1'. It is available now for purchase at the UGHH.com online store, and has been a top seller in the new UGHH.com Boston Shop since it opened.

A Case Of Writer's Block7/6/05
By: Trees
The cats over at Up Above Records know good music. First they re-release all the J5 12 inches and now they unearth a new classic from an often slept on Cali duo. Yes, it's only been a year since the release of their dope as coke debut album, but the collective effort from Visionaries members Lord Zen and Dannu, also known as Writer's Block have already returned with their sophomore release, 'Next Stop'. Featuring 13 tracks and production from the Visionaries own Key Kool, Life Rexall of the Shape Shifters, DJ Babu, Nobody, Omid, and Mr. Brady. The album is already available in a very limited release, (peep the Up Above website -shhh!) and will be available to most major retailers later this summer. Cop it when it drops kid.
