| Agallah Finally Ready to Drop His Debut Release | 7/26/06 |
| | By: Trees After signing to Tommy Boy at age 17 under the moniker 8-Off the Assassin, you'd expect the Dipset/Purple City affiliate Agallah to have at least released one solo album by now. But no, the super-producer/MC known for dropping underground classics "Ghetto Girls" and "Crookie Monster" has waited years for the perfect opportunity to drop his solo album, You Already Know. The album is being released hot off the heels of his critically acclaimed mixtape release, Propane Piff and other successful releases from his Purple City crew. Appearances on the album range from Nappy Roots, to Kool G Rap and Dead Prez. Production is handled almost exclusively by Agallah himself sans a few heatrocks from Alchemist and DJ Premier. | Teknological Advancement | 7/26/06 |
| | By: Trees In a little less than five years Babygrande has quickly risen to the top of the underground hip hop record label food chain. In their latest power move, Babygrande Records recently announced the signing of one of underground hip hop's most notoriously dope producers, DJ Hi-Tek. As a Rawkus Records graduate, and one half of the duo Reflection Eternal Hi-Tek has elevated his status to not only an underground hip hop living legend, but a crossover producer extraordinaire. His production resume looks like a veritable who's who of talent in hip hop today, with beats laced for Busta Rhymes, The Game, 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Snoop Dogg and more. His new LP, Hi-Teknology 2 is now slated to be released this fall on Babygrande. The album boasts a pretty impressive lineup of talent rocking over Hi-Tek's drums including; Nas, Common, Talib Kweli, The Game, Ghostface Killah, Slim Thug, Raekwon, Tha Doggpound, Bun B., Q-Tip, Mos Def & more. Look for the album in October.

| Tajai Aims to Keep The Bay Movement Movin' | 7/26/06 |
| | By: Trees Tajai Massey, one-forth of the Souls of Mischief crew and founding member of the indie hip-hop powerhouse Hieroglyphics Imperium, announced his latest venture; the first official release from Clear Label Records, Beeda Weeda. After dropping two mixtapes that sold over 8K copies in the Bay Area alone, Beeda Weeda's debut full-length album Turfology 101 will be released on August 29th 2006. Beeda Weeda is a rapper and producer from the notorious Murder Dubs neighborhood of Oakland, CA. With seven years of production experience and two mixtapes under this belt, Beeda is ready to unleash his narration of street life in Oakland with Turfology 101 The album is a reflection of Beeda's experiences growing up in East Oakland. As Beeda puts it, "Turfology 101 is a lesson for those who want to know about Oakland's 'hood life, our swagger, our culture, the sideshows, the hyphy shit, and the hustle mentality. I touch on all of those subjects on my album." Tajai founded Clear Label Records in 1999 to provide a home for some of the most talented artists the rich Bay Area scene has to offer. Other artists on the label include emcee Shake Da Mayor, pop/rock singer Chris Marsol, and funk/RnB singer Baby James. Using his experience as both a successful artist and successful label owner, Tajai has big plans to take these artists to the next level. "Contrary to what people may think, I'm not anti-mainstream or anti-major label," explains Tajai. "When things start to pop off and the majors come knocking on our door to bring these hardworking talented artists out of the 'hood and into the TV screens and speakers of mainstream America, then I'll consider my job done." To Tajai, Clear Label Records is more than just making money - it's about enabling artists to make smart choices in their careers and lives. | Elemental Magazine Saves Paper | 7/18/06 |
| | By: Trees Online magazines, for lack of a better word, suck. Usually laced with flashy pop-up ads, stock photos, tired interviews, and horribly written articles I find myself checking for them.. uhh.. never. This is all about to change. Starting with their current issue Elemental Magazine is offering an alternative to the cheese. Already one of the realest hip hop magazine's available in the marketplace Elemental is thinking way ahead of the curve with their newest move. For the first time ever, interested readers will have the ability to download each issue FOR FREE in full color .pdf format. Elemental will still be available in paper format, but as the digital world grows ever stronger Elemental is hoping that this decision will give readers a choice. But why free? Shouldn't they be charging SOMETHING? Matt Wright, Elemental's publisher breaks it down for us, "Why are we risking losing so much money? Because Elemental Magazine has always given the middle finger to convention, and in the end we believe this change in the industry will make magazine publishing more profitable. As strings are tightened all over, this evolution in the medium will bring hundreds of thousands of new readers to a magazine. More readers means more money. And the fact that we get to eliminate the profiteering middle-man in the process makes it that much sweeter." | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| Defari Promises To Focus Daily On New LP | 7/18/06 |
| | By: Trees Ok I'll give Defari this, the Likwit Junkies LP was pretty dope, but since Focused Daily nothing the man has dropped has really lived up to the potential the Cali based MC displayed on his first LP. That may soon change. Street Music, the not-so-original titled new LP from the ABB Records roster member set to drop 8/8/06 is set to bring the MC full circle. Taking it to the streets, Defari's vision for his new project began with the very people who supported him from the outset of his career. "I took the advice of my fans, and they told me my best effort was Focused Daily," he says of conversations that led to Street Music. "So, I wanted to take it back to Focused Daily and turn it up times 20. That's what Street Music is about. That's where hip-hop began. That's what I am, a hip-hop artist, and that's what I'm giving them, a straight bang-out." The album features production from The Alchemist, Evidence, & E-Swift to name a few and appearances from Dilated Peoples, B-Real, and J-Ro. | | | | Subscribe RSS |

| Non Phixion Disbands | 7/17/06 |
| | By: Damino In a MySpace bulletin delivered on July 14, NYC stalwarts Non Phixion declared that they are dissolving their ten year union to allow the individual members to focus on their solo endeavors and side projects. The bulletin indicates that the split is a logical response to ongoing troubles caused by one member, stating, "After years of dealing with and concealing Goretex's general unreliability and total lack of interest in touring, writing and recording music with Non Phixion, the rest of the group has reluctantly opted to bring it to a dignified end in order to maintain the group's integrity. Continuing on without any one member of this group would be bullshit." The missive goes on to indicate that Ill Bill, Sabac Red, and DJ Eclipse will all continue to work together on future projects and on tour. Ill Bill, along with his work with La Coka Nostra, plans to release a Live at CBGB's DVD later this year and unveil his sophomore solo project The Hour of Reprisal in 2007. Sabac is hard at work on his own sophomore effort, The Ritual, and DJ Eclipse plans to issue a Halftime Show DVD next year, featuring freestyles and interviews from guests to his WNYU radio show of the same name. | | | | Subscribe RSS |
