Royce Da 5'9 A Free Man!7/20/07
By: J. Knight Shamalan
The King of Rock City is officially a free man! Royce was released from the Michigan prison system on July 18th after finishing up a year bid. With the recent dropping of his Primo collaborated mixtape, The Bar Exam, Royce will be hitting the studio as soon as he can to work on his newest album Street Hop. I'm sure an abundance of other worthwhile material will be dropped by the Detroit MC in the near future as well. One of the underground's truest staples of real hip hop is back again, and just in time. Boom!

Cold As Icewater7/20/07
By: Trees
While there are no new developments on Raekwon's highly anticipated Cuban Linx sequel, the shaolin swordsmith is prepping a brand new release from his Ice Water clique – set to drop August 28th on Babygrande Records. The "highly anticipated" album features an interesting array of guest shots, including Method Man, Busta Rhymes, Rick Ross, Jagged Edge, Three Six Mafia, and the accused attempted murderer; Remy Ma. And now that Remy Ma's got the juice the sneaky folks over @ Babygrande have leaked the first single and surprise surprise, it's featuring Remy Ma! (To Download the File Click Here). While I'm personally not too familiar with the Icewater crew, I've copied and pasted the info from the press release here: "Under the tutelage of Wu-Tang Clan's resident chef Raekwon, the four-man crew of Polite, Stomach, P.C. (Paulie Caskets) and D.C. (Donnie Cash) marks Staten Island's return to prominence as a hotbed for fresh, credible talent. Die hard fans may remember Ice Water from their appearances on several tracks on Raekwon's last album, 2002's "The Lex Diamond Story," as well as their opening stints for the Chef on his subsequent 30+ state tour. As Raekwon confirms, "We knew these cats had potential way back, but the timing wasn't right. I always kept a radar on dudes, and when I felt they was ready mentally and lyrically, I helped 'em get on." Raekwon presents.Ice Water: Polluted Water hits stores August 28th, 2007.

Max B Is A Free Man7/20/07
By: J. Knight Shamalan
For all you Dipset fans some good news, (for Christians, time will tell). Max B of Jim Jones' Byrd Gang was released from prison the other day, after serving a several month stint. Max B, also known as Bigavelli, claims that he is "about to come back to hit the town like young Jesus of Nazareth." In the past, Max B. has recorded with the likes of the Killa Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, and of course, Jim Jones. Only time will tell if Bigavelli can truly live up to the heavenly legacy of the big J.C.

The Fifster Unloads On All Who Oppose!! Shit Talk Roundup.7/20/07
By: Trees
"Vitamin Water". The hype machine is on full power nowadays for Connecticut's own 50 Cent as he prepares to drop his 3rd solo effort; CURTIS to the masses. Now I ain't gonna lie and I know I'll catch some heat for this but I've never really disliked 50, thought he was kind of entertaining actually. I never copped Massacre, but I bought Get Rich, enjoyed some of his singles, never hated without cause.. but dude crossed the fucking line going after Ghostface. Anyway, for those that missed it, 50 and Yayo are featured in this months SPIN magazine trashing the career of the almighty Tony Starks. Here is an excerpt:

SPIN: So what do you really think about those guys who say they're not going to curse anymore?
50: They're just saying it. They're not going to really do it.
SPIN: Yeah, it's hard to imagine Ghostface is going to stop cursing, especially considering his last couple of records.
YAYO: The streets are different now," says Yayo. "Guys like Ghostface don't matter. They don't. They had a run, but it's over.
SPIN: But can't he just make a great record, even if it doesn't sell, and we can appreciate it as listeners, as hip-hop fans?
50: No, because a great record is embraced and enjoyed by the public. And it's played in cars and clubs.
SPIN: What if it sells a couple hundred thousand copies, isn't that valid? Or does it have to sell millions for you to take it seriously?
50 CENT: In my camp, a couple hundred thousand records is a failure. From my perspective, if I sell 200,000 copies, after selling 12 million records, it's considered terrible.
SPIN: But maybe he's trying to make a different kind of record?
50 CENT: What, the kind people don't buy?
SPIN: No, one with incredible, detailed storytelling that's moving and powerful, and isn't dependent on some obvious hook.
50 CENT: Look, I understand all that. But if you're on a major record label, and he [Ghostface] is, and you sell a couple hundred thousand records, that was a failure. Your fuckin' photos and videos aren't recouped with 200,000 copies sold.
SPIN: OK, but can you at least acknowledge that a commercial flop, like, say, [Ghostface's] Supreme Clientele, can still be an artistic achievement?
YAYO: He didn't even write that album, man.
SPIN: What?
YAYO: He didn't write it. That kid from Far Rockaway -- Superb -- he wrote that record. You know Superb from Far Rock?
SPIN: No, and that's a pretty serious charge.
50: I don't know nothing about any of that. He's the writer. I'm not gonna say he ain't write it. But it still didn't work! I mean, when I make music, I make it with the intention that the world's gonna enjoy it. I have music that I feel like is really good music, but I haven't released it. There's things playing at my house right now that's never gonna be played on the radio. And that music isn't out there, because I didn't feel like enough people would actually respond to it.

In addition to Ghostface, 50's been all over the media circuit trashing everyone he can in hopes that he can beat out Kanye's Graduation LP sales figures when they both drop on Sept. 11th. Yup, you read right. Kanye's Graduation and 50 Cent's Curtis are going head to head on 9/11. 50 seems to be running a little scared too, calling out Jay-Z to switch the release date. 50 affirms, "It's coming September 11th. I'm not moving nowhere. September 11th is the day, and I'm not pushing it back under any circumstances... I hope that they see and understand what's getting ready to happen. I'm not movin... If Kanye come that day he come that day. I mean, that will be great if he actually stays on that day. I think these people are smart. I think he's smart, too. And I think they'll move. But I'm coming September 11th. Jay's not gonna let that happen anyway.". This could be a release date battle of absolutely epic proportions.

Check out some of 50's other recent disses from this week's recent interviews:

On Lil' Wayne working with numerous artists: "Like, a whore sleeps with whoever pay them. So we gotta call him a whore - if he just goes with whoever."

On Cam'rons YouTube Video: "Yeah, he's a fool. Why would you shoot a video from poolside your little polka dot underwear? Doesn't make sense."

On Nas: You have people that are extremely book smart that lack common sense so they don't know what's going to affect their audience. They have more information than me based on reading...For instance, Nas is a really smart guy. He reads books constantly. We were around him on the Nastradamus tour. He was almost weirder than me 'cause we would go to breakfast and he'd be there reading a book. Conceptually, I think that's what made him drift away from what his initial audience enjoys from him and why he's not hot right now"

For more 50 Cent (isn't this enough?) tune in to Sirius Radio tomorrow where 50 & DJ Whoo Kid will take listeners overseas to London to the videoshoot for 50's new single "She Wants It" featuring Justin Timberlake. Special guests are set to include; Timbaland, Terrence Howard, Tony Yayo, Baron Davis, Thierry Henry (????), models, & groupies.

Wayne Vs. Clipse – Continues7/20/07
By: Trees
It all started in the fall of 2006. As the Clipse were preparing to release their LP, Hell Hath No Fury, Wayne (possibly jealous of their relationship with Pharrell) randomly made an off the cuff remark about the Virginia coke slangers stating in an interview, "I don't see no fucking Clipse. This is a fucking legend you're talking to right here. How many years them n*ggas been around? Who the fuck is Pharrell?". Well, the Clipse have been on tour since that time and haven't really responded to Weezy F., until now. Check out this month's Laced Magazine where the Clipse stated: "If you Wobble Dee Wobble Dee, you can't be a legend. You can't kiss other men, you can't wobble dee-wobble dee, and and you can't bite styles. You can't try to rap like Jay-Z, dress like the Clipse, become a coke dealer after 5 albums, and now dress like Jim Jones. You can't do all that and be a legend. You have to be a trendsetter and he ain't setting any trends".

It's Just Another Case Of That A.D.A.7/11/07
By: Trees
The Associated Press is reporting that Busta Rhymes was offered, and subsequently rejected a plea bargain today that would have the rapper serve a year in jail on four separate charges. "It's the same offer the prosecutor made at the last court appearance and it's one which Busta adamantly rejects," said Scott Leemon, Busta's Lawyer. To refresh your memory, Busta Rhymes is facing four charges. Two assault charges stemming from an incident where Busta beat up a fan and spit on his car and another incident where he reportedly assaulted his former driver over a dispute over back pay. The other two charges come from a drunk driving arrest in May and a February arrest for driving with a suspended license. Assistant District Attorney Harrison Schweiloch is now prepared to prosecute Busta to the fullest extent when his trial begins September 5. And now because he rejected the deal, the ADA did not move to have the drunk-driving and suspended-license cases consolidated. Leemon said the judge will hold hearings for the drunken driving and suspended license cases to determine whether any statements Busta made to police before and after he was arrested may be used at trial. Good luck Busta!

Clipse Back In The U.S. & Focused7/11/07
By: Trees
After touring the U.S. for much of this year and more recently completing a month long European venture the coke peddling brothers from Virginia known collectively as the Clipse are ready to re-up on some studio time. According to MTV.com, Pusha T and Malice are in the final stages of mixing down volume three of their We Got It 4 Cheap Mix CD series. In response to the lack of new Clipse music on the streets Pusha had this to say, "The only thing that slowed us up is the road. This [past] album [2006's Hell Hath No Fury] was definitely our baby. So what was lacking in major promotion or whatever, we wanted to cover that in the streets, we wanted to cover that in our show. Get in the nooks and crannies of everything. If we not touching the masses, we really wanted to touch our fans. So we really dedicated ourselves to touring." Back in the lab now, the Clipse appeared almost angry in the media and various interviews to claims that their music was being labeled simply as ‘Coke Rap'. So what does that mean for their new projects? Well, you can expect the Neptunes in the fold again for sure, but according to Pusha-T, ""We trying to find another direction, we had a long talk, me and P (Pharrell), a couple weeks ago. And we just decided we're gonna lock it with the go-to beats and try to find something new. This next album, we're really, really trying to take it there. Like creatively, just take it ... there and totally reinvent East Coast, fly, drug dealer, club music. I want people to be able to bop to my sh-- as well as spin my sh--."

Whattup with Outkast? Well, a lot apparently. While Andre 3000 recently confirmed that him and Big Boi are indeed working on a new joint Outkast LP he also stated that the project may not see the light of day until 2009! Long time to wait especially since the pair are dropping gems like International Player's Anthem! Fear not, the two are heavily into recording sessions for their respective solo albums. Andre recently reported that, "Big Boi is working on a solo album right now. I'm working on a solo album as well because of all the remix work that's been coming out." Andre did recently drop the Class of 3000 soundtrack, a project from his In addition to the solo joints Andre is of course heavily involved in Hollywood, appearing in the up coming Will Ferrell flick, Semi-Pro and also a small role in a movie about the 1999 WTO Protests in Seattle. Andre also shot down any rumors that he is slated to play Jimi Hendrix or Sammy Davis Jr. any time soon.

NYG'z Are New York Giants7/11/07
By: Trees
Fans of Gang Starr have been waiting anxiously for DJ Premier's Year Round Label to open up shop and that day has finally arrived! Hot off of the heels of their DJ Premier produced "Anti-Imus" protest track, 'N.H.B.' which features Blaq Poet, Gang Starr Foundation members, The NYG'z (Panchi and Shabeeno), are set to put NY on their back and wack shit under attack with the release of their debut street-LP Welcome To G-Dom.

With the release of 'Welcome To G-Dom', which will be released on 9-12-07, it will mark the first release from DJ Premier's Year Round Records imprint and the first of a veritable slew of projects the label has kept under wraps until now. DJ Premier assertively states "NYG'z is bringin' the definition of a duo back to the front line of Hip-Hop. Not only is it street, but they represent the true meaning of what it is to make a real album…You heard the first Jeru The Damaja LP and the Group Home LP; need I say more?"

Lupe, Kanye, & Pharrell Collabo LP?7/2/07
By: Trees
A Kanye, Lupe, and Pharrell supergroup? Well if you copped the new Kanye Can't Tell Me Nothing Mix CD you'd already have heard them together on the track, "Us Placers". The trio, rumored to be called CRS or Child Rebel Soldier or even Chicago Runs Shit could collectively do some serious chart damage. Lupe hit the internet last week and confirmed the rumors about the crew's existence stating CRS is, "a little project that me, Kanye, and Skateboard P sat down and was like, 'Yo let's do a group.' 'Us Placers,' was the first record we came out with. Now we sitting down deciding if we really going to go hard or not, but we working on some surprises." Of course no full album has been confirmed and Lupe stated, "It depends what it sounds like, we gotta make some more records. Everybody is mad busy, Kanye is doing his record, Pharrell's in the studio".

Kanye is pretty busy alright, with the new album just around the corner Graduation featuring no guest appearances except for a brief Jeezy adlib The K west is putting the whole project on his shoulders and running for the finish line with it. We all know that Daft Punk sample is a fucking killer in stronger, but how the hell did Ye clear that (besides the fact he's K. West-Hot Shit)? Well MTV broke down the knowledge today. His DJ, A-Trak is a huge fan of the hipster movement (yes they have a movement now too), and introduced Kanyeezy to the house music masters. Word is Kanye's now heavily up on and into the whole dance music scene and is heavily feeling some of the acts on A-Trak and Catchdub's new Fool's Gold imprint. Speaking of Fool's Gold we just got our hands on that new Kid Sister jump off. It's ill. Open ya minds.

The Duckdown Onslaught Continues7/2/07
By: Trees
Funny how the game changes so quickly. Last year at this time I was reading Elemental Magazine (Now defunct) and in their interview with the whole Duck Down crew, Dru-Ha was talking about how bad their previous distribution deal with KOCH Records was. Fast forward 12 short months, Duck Down Records are once again distributed by KOCH. Let's hope the relationship hasn't been soured because the double D's got a healthy platter of treats fresh out the oven and ready to be served. The first release is Sean Price's Master P Mix CD. If the rumors are true, it's not hard to see why Jay-Z's been calling the Heltah Skeltah MC. P's an apparant workaholic. Sean Price is currently in Detroit finishing up the Guilty Simpson / Black Milk / Sean Price collabo LP, which is slated for a fall 2007 release and then he's back to NYC to continue work on his next solo LP, Mic Tyson AND the highly anticipated new Heltah Skeltah project. Smif-N-Wessun will also be back with a new LP this fall, but in the mean time check out Steele's Hotstyle Takeover Mix CD. And Buckshot and 9th Wonder are also finally dropping the sequel to Chemistry, entitled The Formula. And don't forget the Casualties of War project from the Clik, which is a collection of tracks from abandoned solo projects and joints left off of The Last Stand.

Special Teamz Breaking All Rap Stereotypez7/2/07
By: Trees
Speaking of Duck Down records, mark your calendars for 9/25/07. That is the day the highly anticipated Special Teamz LP titled, Stereotypez drops. For those that have been sleeping on the crew, Special Teamz consists of Edo.G, Slaine (of La Coka Nostra), and JaySaun (formerly of the Kreators). Their highly touted debut mix cd landed in '05 with the DJ Premier laced ‘Main Event' as the projects single. Since that time fans have been clamoring for more of the crew and with Stereotypez boasting a production lineup from the likes of DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Marco Polo, Jake One and Ill Bill it wouldn't be wrong to say that the hype surrounding the crew is growing. Guest appearances on Stereotypez range from Sean Price, Buckshot, and Devin The Dude to Ill Bill and Jamie Jasta of Hatebreed among others. Could be a 07 Classic. Time will tell.

Five years in the making the LP features an almost ungodly lineup of underground hip hop talent. Including the likes of Cannibal Ox, M.F. DOOM, Sean Price, Immortal Technique, Tame One, R.A. The Rugged Man and Wordsworth. Currently the only Parallel Thought product we carry is the M.F. DOOM twelver Vomit. A serious heatrock if I heard one. Make sure to check for the full LP.

N.O.R.E. Lands On Babygrande7/2/07
By: Trees
N.O.R.E. finally dropped that whole reggaeton bullshit phase he was going through. It looks like kid is making Hip Hop music again. His new home? You guessed it, Babygrande Records. Babygrande Records is seriously making power moves as of late. Who woulda thought 5 years ago Jedi Mind Tricks would be labelmates with N.O.R.E. and GZA. Ha ha.. The album is slated to be a CD / DVD combo and titled, Noreality. Due in stores September; the album features guest appearances from Jadakiss, Three Six Mafia, Kanye West, Pharrell Williams, Mobb Deep's Prodigy, Bun B, Tru Life, David Banner, Capone, Swizz Beatz and Kurupt, among others. N.O.R.E. is also working on another full length album titled Global Warming 11368 and currently has a mixtape out with DJ Green Lantern called Cocaine on Steroids. What What! I wonder if he'll be dropping such lyrical gems as "Hey Yo We Light Candle/ Run Laps around the English Channel…"
