7/30/08
2 Live Crew
By: Trees A Tennessee based global independent publishing company called Evergreen Copyrights has purchased the 700 song catalog of Lil' Joe Wien Music, which was home to a grip of popular Miami Bass era groups, like Poison Clan, 69 Boyz, and of course 2 Live Crew.
2 Live Crew is still under contract to Lil' Joe Records and is planning on releasing their first new album in 5 years - Just Wanna Be Heard in 2009. No word on whether or not El-P will be copping the new album.
One Leg Up Records: OLU-003 LP - Lord Digga, High Plains Drifter EP
7/30/08
Rare Lord Digga
By: Trees One Leg Up Records, the label responsible for the Herb McGruff Demo EP and the Cenobites Demented Thoughts EP are preparing their 3rd release in the series and this time they are unearthing material from the one and only Lord Digga and his High Plains Drifter EP. Lord Digga is known to many as the MC and beatsmith integral in helping shape Masta Ace's Slaughtahouse and Sittin' On Chrome. The press release explains the origins of the record:
"After securing the deal with Big Beat, Lord Digga recorded several new records. Jumping the gun, Big Beat released the song "Man Digga Comin' Thru" on a promotional single in 1996. According to Digga, this song wasn't supposed to be leaked and the material he had on deck had greatly surpassed the label's choice. Ironically, the single did well anyway and the underground scene in NYC and elsewhere were fiending for more! Unfortunately, label politics prevailed and Lord Digga's project was caught up in the turmoil regarding the dissolution of Big Beat Records and the incorporation of all artists signed to Big Beat into Atlantic Records proper. Along with many others signed to Big Beat at the time, Lord Digga's project never saw the light of day, and fans have been left to speculate for almost 13 years about either the existence of his album or how much of it was really completed..."
One Leg Up Records somehow obtained the original reels form those recording sessions and pressed up the vinyl in a completely remastered form. The record is already being described as "incredible… A vintage, mid-90's album of classic caliber! Gritty smacking drums, heavy basslines, filters, horn echoes, scratching and raw lyricism".

By: Trees In case you missed Rocksteady Weekend - you might have missed the Artifacts Reuinon. Yep, Tame One and El Da Sensei rocked together on stage for the first time since 1997. Nice to see that even these two can squash the beef for the betterment of hip hop.

By: Mark DiSalvo Slim Shady may be back sooner rather than later. The Detroit MC is said to be working on a new album, according to Dre protege, Bishop Lamont. He told Entertainment Weekly that Eminem has showed him some tracks and they were "amazing stuff." Lamont also said the death of Eminem's close friend Proof in 2006, had a big effect on him, but "now he's been able to take all the pain and stress and put it out in his music," Lamont said. There's no release date set at this time.

By: Mark DiSalvo New Amalgam Digital family member and former Dipset affiliate, Max B, was nearly shot before a recent performance last week in New York City. Max told SOHH he doesn't believe the shooter was trying to shoot him, saying "they was too scared to shoot me so they just made it look like they was doin' something big." He also believes people want him dead, but he hasn't named any suspects.
One group that can be ruled out according to Max B is Jim Jones and the Byrd Gang. On Max B's latest mixtape, he shouts out to the Byrd Gang. In the same interview, he said the shout-out was intentional and meant in good taste. He also told SOHH that he had a lot of gratitude for Jim Jones and wished him and the Dipset the best of luck with their careers.
By: Mark DiSalvo By now, you've likely heard about or have seen Nas taking on Fox News. He's teamed up with MoveOn.org to collect over 600,000 signatures that demand Fox News change its racist ways in reporting on black americans, including Barrack Obama. His most high profile appearance came on the Colbert Report last week. Video clips of Colbert's segment on Nas, the interview, and his performance of "Sly Fox" are below.
By: Mark DiSalvo A short Rakim update for those fiending for the Seventh Seal. Rakim is now saying that his highly anticipated album The Seventh Seal,, will be out in two or three months, according to a recent interview with HipHopDX. The legendary MC didn't comment beyond the timeframe, but said he's ready for the world to hear it. Wouldn't it be something to see Detox, The Seventh Seal and Chinese Democracy all in 2008?
By: Mark DiSalvo Big Pooh and 9th Wonder reunited again? Well, they're appearing together on Big Pooh's latest video from his upcoming mixtape, "Rapper's Delight." The song, "With You," is also produced by the North Carolina star producer. Check out the video below.
Weezy Of The Week: Wayne Targeted By Rolling Stones
7/30/08
Weezy
By: Mark DiSalvo Failing to clear samples even plagues the multi-platinum rappers. Lil Wayne has been sued by a publishing company owning the rights to a Rolling Stones song the agency claims was sampled on Weezy's latest album, Tha Carter III. Abkco Music, the publisher, is charging Wayne with copyright infringement and unfair competition. XXL Magazine is reporting the track, "Play with Fire" was redone by the producer, Streetrunner since the sample was not cleared. The publishing company is also citing "explicit, sexist and offensive language" in the case, saying that it will lead the public to believe the Rolling Stones and Abkco Music approved of the use of the song.

By: Mark DiSalvo Detox is coming... no, really. Well, the reality is, we can't say it with any certainty until we see it, but Dre sure is confident. According to Dr Dre, his long awaited follow-up to 1999's "Chronic 2001" is set to be released this November or December, Rolling Stone is reporting. "I'm just now — over the last couple of months — starting to feel that it's going to be right and it's something I can be proud of, and everybody is going to love it," Dre told Rolling Stone Magazine. Dre also confirmed appearances by Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Nas. Snoop Dogg also confirmed to Rolling Stone that he will be appearing on the album, and that the album is actually completed. "I was starting to doubt it myself and then I went up in there and he played so much music for me it knocked my head off," Snoop said to Rolling Stone. Dr Dre all but hinted that this would be his last full length effort as an MC and producer, saying his roll from here on out will be a "hermit" and producer.

Nas Keeps Teasing Us: Dr. Dre & DJ Premier Record Same Day Drop?
7/21/08
Nas
By: Trees According to MTV: "On July 15, while performing in concert, Nas made a very public appeal to DJ Premier (who was not present) and said the people are waiting for them to make an entire album together." But Nas didn't stop there - the #1 selling artist in the world right now, went on to say - "I want to do an all-Dr. Dre album," he told MTV News. "A whole thing with Dre and a whole thing with Premier, and drop 'em on the same day. That's the real thing. All right, I said it. That's what I really wanna do."
"I'm doing my dream," he continued. "If you could, wouldn't you do it? What else would you do? Every time I do something, it's, 'Oh, he's doing it because this and that.' Since my first album, everybody has an explanation of why. What am I supposed to be doing here? So I wanna drop the Dre album and the Premier album on the same day. That's what I'm thinking."
By: Trees [Press Release:] One of the most renowned and continually relevant hip-hop emcees of all time, GZA returns with his long awaited fifth solo album, ProTools. An original member of the legendary Wu-Tang Clan, GZA has established himself as a perennial force in hip-hop over his 13+ year solo career. Recently, GZA's contributions have driven the phenomenal success of the 2008 Wu-Tang Clan reunion album 8 Diagrams as well as two of independent hip-hop's recent flagship releases: Think Differently Music: Wu-Tang Meets The Indie Culture and the DJ Muggs/GZA collaboration Grandmasters.
With an entrenched and rabidly loyal fan base, "ProTools" marks the long awaited return of one of hip-hop's most revered and respected emcees. And just wait until you hear what he has to say!!! The album's first leak track, "Paper Plate," finds GZA going in hard at a Vitamin Water mogul (50 Cent). With "Paper Plate," GZA is in top form, a true veteran showcasing the incomparable style that has defined witty battle rap for the greater part of a decade. Spitting 104 bars of straight heat, GZA cuts the legs out from under the G-Unit impresario, reminding us all how sweet beef on wax really sounds. Using metaphor and lyrical imagery (and without employing a single curse word), GZA gives it to us "burnt & crispy."
True heads stand up...The Genius has finally returned.
