Sadat X Prepares For New Album and Prison Term8/31/06
By: Trees
Life does not slow down for the man known as Sadat X. After a year that included the passing of his father, the bankruptcy of his record distributor, the release of his critically acclaimed third LP, and a highly publicized arrest on gun possession, one would expect the Brand Nubian member to take some time off and concentrate on relaxing for a while. Nope. Sadat X is back making waves again with the announcement of his fourth full length release dropping this October titled, Black October. The title stems from the month in which Sadat will begin his year long prison sentence on gun charges. Featuring production from the likes of Diamond D, Da Beatminerz, DJ Spinna, and J-Zone and appearances from Brand Nubian and Greg Nice the album is set to tell the tale of Sadat's trials and tribulations as well as successes over the last tumultuous year. Cop it off UGHH.com 10/17.

Kenn Starr Keeps the Rawkus Era Alive8/31/06
By: Trees
Remember when you used to cop everything with a Rawkus Records logo on it? Every MC came correct and the underground was bubblin with talent. Well, the record label has long since been eaten up by the majors, but the sound and feel that the era represented is being kept alive by a stable of underground talent that you may or may not have heard of. A good place to start exploring the new era of MC talent out there is with the release of Kenn Starr's debut LP, Starr Status. Starr Status features features guest appearances by Talib Kweli, Supastition, Asheru, Median, Oddisee, Kev Brown, Darien Brockington and more, as well as outstanding production from Illmind, Khrysis, Oddisee, Kev Brown, and DJ Roddy Rod. The album is in stores now.

Verbal Kent Survives Attempt On His Life, Readies New LP8/31/06
By: Trees
Just months after dropping his debut LP, "What Box", the Chicago MC known as Verbal Kent met with the wrong end of a knife in an alleyway near his house. The assailant slashed his throat with a blade, the wound just missing his jugular vein by centimeters. With the near death experience providing the prime motivation for his sophomore album, Move With The Walls. The LP breaks down the reality of a recovery in progress and the will to break free from the confines and the hold of the pain associated. The album also covers a range of topics and concepts, such as "Rewind", detailing a troubled relationship, and "Trapped", about feeling overwhelmed by life's situations. With the help of incredible production, courtesy of Oddisee (who chips in four tracks), Maker of GLUE, Overflo, K-Kruz of Modill, Kaz1 and Earmint, Verbal Kent's 'Move With the Walls' is a thoughtful manifesto that fused with classic hip-hop collaboration tracks, alongside such artists as Ill Bill of Non Phixion, Tableek of Maspyke, Blade (UK), Longshot, as well as label mates Earatik Statik and Rusty Chains.

Ras Kass Returns8/31/06
By: Trees
The west coast always seems to be in some sort of resurrection. I don't know why people don't just accept the fact that the dub-cee never really fell off, I think it might have just been hibernating for a minute or two. The highly respected and legendary MC known as Ras Kass is the latest MC to raise a flag for the state of California. After a two year prison stint and a few mixtapes the verbal behemoth is finally ready to drop his new LP entitled, Eat Or Die. The guest appearances on the LP are pretty crazy, and it's clear Ras Kass is not f'n around. Check out the features: T.I., Nas, Lloyd Banks, Mobb Deep, Spider Loc, and 40 Glocc, new Dr. Dre/Aftermath signee Joell Ortiz, Houston's Trae, and Alchemist. Cop the album when it drops 9/19/06!

Kashmere Stage Band Sales Skyrocket After NPR Feature8/31/06
By: Trees
The weekend after National Public Radio did a feature on the re-discovered 60s & 70s funk group the Kashmere Stage Band, sales for the LP skyrocketed. The first weekend of August, after the feature was played pushed the sales of KSB to #10 on Amazon.com Top Sellers (Alongside Gnarls Barkley, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and ahead of Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, & Thom Yorke!). Pretty good for a band who has received no commercial radio or video play. Check out the below link to listen to Egon and Kashmere Stage Band director Conrad O. Johnson (now 92 yrs old) talk with David Brown from NPR affiliate station KUT in Austin, Texas about funk, jazz and DJ Shadow. Click Here

Jedi Mind Tricks New LP8/17/06
By: Trees
Vinnie Paz and Co. are back at it again. It's hard to believe that the upcoming JMT album will be the group's fifth full length studio release, but it is. The album titled Servants in Heaven, Kings In Hell is slated to drop a mere month from now on September 19th. The buzz has been heavy for this album, as is the case with most JMT releases. The group is easily one of the most revered and respected groups in the genre today. Appearances from Sean Price, Ill Bill, and R.A. the Rugged Man fuel speculation that the album will once again focus on dark, socially charged lyrics, heavy instrumentation, and violently fueled mind expanding topics. The lead single, "Heavy Metal Kings" (which has also been made into a video), features Vinnie Paz's brother-in-arms, Ill Bill of the now defunct Non-Phixion, and is currently available on iTunes. A blue 12" limited edition vinyl personally signed by Vinnie is also available for purchase while supplies last at www.jedi-mind-tricks.com. The crew is also on tour. Check the tour dates below:

Thirstin Howl The 3rd Returns With The Newness8/16/06
By: Trees
Ever since I almost got jumped two years ago at Rocksteady for my vintage Polo T-Shirt by one of the Lo-Lifes, (which actually wasn't vintage and I had copped earlier in the month from Filenes), I knew that the Lo-Life camp was not to be f*cked with. Thirstin Howl, like the Rakim joint, ain't no joke. Believe it or not, he's on his 7th solo LP. The new one is called La Cura and is being sold as an all "Spanglish" LP. According to Howl's press release, the album brings "that hard, grimey, Brownsville Brooklyn sound with some latin spice". The album features some heavyweights like, Hurricane G, Tony Touch, Block McCloud, and Don Dinero. In addition to the new album the Skillosopher is also dropping a new DVD entitled, The Polo Rican Movie. The DVD description definitely makes me a little curious, but also a little cautious; "A dramatic, comedic, musical journey with Thirstin Howl the 3rd as he escapes the ghettos of New York for the hood in Miami. He makes enemies on both sides of the law and is bullied by his Big Cuzin who's always checkin' up on him". The movie is also set to feature women being kidnapped and big guns. Cop.

Nicolay Readies New LP8/16/06
By: Trees
Unsatisfied as a band leader and multi-instrumentalist with a decade of experience performing alongside the likes of Boyz II Men and K-Ci & JoJo, Dutch multi-instrumenalist Nicolay started producing hip hop in 2000. Shortly thereafter, he came across Phonte Coleman of Little Brother through the Okayplayer message boards. The two soon began trading tracks and rhymes back and forth over instant messenger, until they emerged with one of the most cohesive and innovative albums of 2004, The Foreign Exchange, and the appropriately titled album, Connected. In 2006, Nicolay presents his long anticipated debut album, Here. Gearing up for his future move to the States, Nicolay takes this album on a musical journey; with collaborations from hip hop artists in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, Texas, L.A., and of course, North Carolina. Already destined to be a future classic, ‘Here' is overflowing in great artistry and musicianship, songs and production. To download a preview track entitled, "I Am The Man", click here

By: Trees
You knew it was coming. After a few teaser singles and months of hype Kutmasta Kurt and the Motion Man are finally ready to drop his long awaited sophomore release, Pablito's Way on 9/12. The LP features Motion's usual cali-flow lyrics and a healthy dosage of the Kutmasta Kurt signature sound. Appearances range from Q-Bert and Kool Keith to Ugly Duckling and Gift Of Gab. To those that ain't up on Motion Man, please check this knowledge. Motion has been collaborated with everyone from Busta Rhymes to Linkin Park and been rhyming in the West Coast scene for almost 20 years. DJ Eclipse, Fat Beats, and UGHH.com Unite For Scribble Jam Only Release8/2/06
By: Trees
If you've been to Scribble Jam the last four years you've more than likely seen the staff of UGHH.com stumbling around slapping stickers on unsuspecting females, drunkenly arguing with rappers, or blazing some of Cincy's finest greenleaves with girls who've been up for 3 or 4 days straight on crystal meth. While all those antics will more than likely be present in the '06 one additional move will be overpowering all others. Proposition any UGHH staff member @ Scribble Jam for some free sh*t and more than likely they will hand you a certified heat rock in the form of a Scribble Jam Exclusive DJ Eclipse Fat Beats Records Sampler. That's right kids, UGHH.com and Fat Beats teamed up like Superman and Batman to stop the forces of overpowering wack MC slimline distribution at Scribble this year. Free CD givers bow down. A little taste of the dope before the fall shipment of Fat Beats Her-on hits the pavement. To cop the CD- hit Scribble, and slap an UGHH.com staff member. We'll slide it your way. Fat Tracks from Cats W/ Knap Sacks8/2/06
By: Trees
Straight from the heavyweights over at Anticon Records, news and tidbits for the alternative hip hop fan. First off, Dosh. Dosh has a new LP coming out. Dosh wants to let you know that the new LP, The Lost Take re-imagines Dosh as the full band he's always wanted to be. It's also the first Dosh album to include vocals. He has taken his expertly arranged keyboard and drum loops, smashed them, and spread them wide over his tracks. Instead of puzzle-piecing his pre-recorded session bits into surprisingly organic soundscapes, Dosh builds his miniature opuses out of live improv by raw, written instrumentation. Dosh- every young hip hop head's hero. Next up, Darc Mind. If you don't know about Darc Mind than listen up because Anticon has been given the opportunity to releases this lost, never before released classic rap album from New York duo. This record was recorded for Loud in the 90s, but for some reason shelved. Anticon's MySpace page just added a new Darc Mind track, "Visions of a Blur" from their album Symptomatic of a Greater Ill, in stores August 29th. Well, I guess technically it's not new.. but it's new to you. Check it out by clicking here.
