Summary

Highlighter, People Under The Stairs' most ambitious work to date, marks their 8th album release and captures the unparalleled group at the height of their 14 year career. More than just an indie hip-hop album, Highlighter's outside collaborators comprise a group of influential LA indy-rock producers, engineers and live players featuring everything from full string sections to vintage vibraphones & keyboards. Recorded across a handpicked selection of Los Angeles studios, the duo dig deep into tape, consoles, obscure records and live players and emerge with a project that is both unique and yet familiar. Amidst the swirling musical landscapes, the P realize their most psychedilic album yet and continue to pioneer an alternate, innovative musical direction in rap music.

Los Angeles based People Under The Stairs, Double K (Michael Turner) and Thes One (Christopher Portugal) are the most successful fully independent hip-hop duo in the history of Hip-Hop. Since their initial full length release in 1998, People Under The Stairs have performed more than a thousand sold out shows, festivals and world tours spanning 6 continents and 40 countries. Their illustrious career includes an appearance on The Simpson's 20th Anniversary Special, a John Peele Session at Abbey Road, and groundbreaking performances at key festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella and Bonnaroo, the last of which was noted by SPIN magazine as "Simply the best performance of Friday... Period". They continued to tour through 2010 with main stage plays at Outside Lands Festival, Governors Ball NYC and many others. The P will be heading out in September with Mac Miller and playing headline dates throughout the US in all major and minor markets.

Comment: This album is a masterpiece. I wrote the album before but I have actually talked to thes one about this record and he told me that colored vinyl is a bitch and I actually like the static now that was bothering me before, it just sounds like it has a lot of crackle. I love the yellow marble colored wax. Thes One told me in person that this one was going to be the rarest people record and I can see why, There were only 2000 copies and they just sold out so if you got a copy of this, hell yea, they are one of a kind unique records that arent like any of the rest. I like how the P took a risk at making some different style music and it is bangin'! Cop This vinyl if you can.

Comment: Ok don't get me wrong, I love PUTS and this album was amazing. I bought this vinyl and it was one of the earlier copies and I got rid of it sadly because it skipped and I'm a perfectionist. Than I bought another copy. Here's the deal, the next 2 copies I've owned of this record on wax have a annoying and frustrating loud statick scratch noise that is not just normal statick you hear on most records. Thes one even sent me a new copy because of this problem and my new copy also had this issue. I can't even listen to it through the first track because I get so frustrated. Very good group and album but the vinyl sounds terrible and had major issues.

Comment: The album is lovely. The beats give you that uplifting feeling that PUTS are known for, and the lyrics despite what the man below me has to say are smart, funny and original. If you're not feeling this record, don't hate, just find yourself a new set of ears.

Comment: PUTS has always been about representing the old school. And lyricaly speaking old school was rime for rime. Nothing deep. Just word play and cool flow. "Now what you hear is not a test!"

Comment: I have no clue what you guys expect??? Not lyrical??? Well nothing on the radio is lyrical and the majority of the world loves that crap! PUTS have fun rhymes and make great music! It might not be Canibus level of complexity but that doesn't matter it is just plain fun and sounds good! Just enjoy it and stop digging and trying to find negative things to say... Internet bloggers sure like to nitpick!!!

Comment: i got this album from a dude on their squad. THE BEATS ON THIS RECORD ARE REAL NICE. They make great beats. Theyre both hard working cats who tour the world constantly. Their lyrics on the other hand... below average and way too simple. No cadence no pun no metaphor. Thats always been my problem with PUTS. The lyrics are not there. It reminds me of "christian rap" - a watered down, emulation of word play..reminds me of The Procussions. *Just saying a bunch of words in an attempt to sound like they rapping. sorry guys but they're not saying anything... at all. Rap music needs to have LYRICS. *Hopefully they make an instrumental version of Highlighter. ----thanks/peace/shoutOUTto:UGHH!!!

Comment: When I think about it. Its still a dope album because it does have really good songs on it but some of the songs should'nt have made the cut. Enough said

Comment: It's such a shame to write this because I love puts but the album was disappointing:( Don't get me wrong it has some good tracks but where are the bangers like the last 3 albums? Iv'e always wondered why they can have really dope tracks like can't hold it back and taking back to the streets. But then they have songs that are just wack and awful to listen to like the second track, at the house, cookies theme, and time bandit? Those beats are straight garbage the tracks almost come of as a joke to me. Really disappointed knowing I bought the vinyl from these dogs. I want to say this album is dope as fuck but with all the other releases out there right now it really disappointed me. Sorry puts im not trying to hate just giving an honest review.

Comment: Bought the album from them.. I love their philosophies on sound recording and in depth attention to mixing and production. Just cant get with the rapping.. Its really hard for me to listen to. Not lyrical at all.

Comment: Got this from PL70 already, and it beyond fresh. There isn't a bad track on here, the production is amazing, and it takes it in new directions without being overly experimental. Can I give it 6 stars? YOU WON'T REGRET THE PURCHASE.
