Summary

Sony Music and Traffic Entertainment Group proudly present Mecca And The Soul Brother, the critically acclaimed 1992 debut album from the Mount Vernon duo, Pete Rock & CL Smooth. The album is considered as one of the greatest Hip Hop albums of all time. Boasting tracks such as the first single, "They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)", a dedication to their deceased friend; "Trouble T-Roy", which went on to become not only their signature hit, but also one of Hip Hop's all-time great songs. The album is propelled forward by Rock's quick, soulful interludes; usually bits of old R&B tunes layered with his signature trumpet and sax loops. Smooth's liquid freestyle delivery pieces together the perfect vocal match that, together, creates a sprawling, nearly 80-minute-long album on which not a single song or interlude is a throwaway or a superfluous piece. Named one of the essential recordings of the 90s by Rolling Stone, among numerous other accolades, Mecca and the Soul Brother stands up without ever really dating itself and is now available in a beautiful 2xCD box set edition.

The first disc features the original 16 album tracks, remastered from the original masters recordings. The second disc contains 15 bonus versions and exclusives. Both discs come housed in individual 'paste on' style sleeves with brightly-colored printed dust sleeves. A 20-page book features in-depth liner notes written by Brian Coleman with contributions from Dante Ross, Pete Rock and CL Smooth. All this plus a full sized poster to boot. This reissue of an early 90s classic is a must have for any music collector or fan of good music.

Comment: One of my fave releases of all time. Can't understand why any self professed hiphop fan could have the audacity to rate this classic with a 1 star rating. I agree that step in the arena is another gem and Temple of boom is ok but its not in this class. As for the beats on this album if anyone can call them repetitive they definately need to stop smoking the crack pipe but opinions should be freely expressed even when they're full of shit!!!

Comment: @LARS Give credit? Pete Rock made TROY completely on his own. Large Pro has even said in interviews that he didn't co-produce it, all he did was give Pete the record. Thats it. Anyway, this is a super classic album! I bought this real quick when I heard about it. Loving the instrumentals on the second disc, those can be hard to find in good quality.

Comment: Pete Rock were tried to define jazz/rap synthesis sound in this album but he failed all beats sounds same and repetitive, you can check out the Gang Starr's Step In The Arena album if you search album that has Jazz Rap sound that's not boring throughout the album, also Cypress Hill's Temples Of Boom was an album that has conceptual sound throughout the album that's not boring, and briefly this album's lyrical content is cheap fuck this overrated so called unsuccesful classic.

Comment: Fantastic album. But I prefer my digital collection over any physical garbadge any day. I ripped my entire CD collection to a lossless format and tossed the CD's in the bin. Now I am happy.

Comment: I'm definitely buying this. I have to add this to my collection. I had the cassette tape back in 1992 and still do. The cassette has 2 extra songs; a remix to Mecca & the Soul Brother and The Creator (Remix). For some reason they aren't included on this reissue but I'm still buying it regardless because it has other remixes on it. Good thing I have The Creator remix on the b-side to the T.R.O.Y. 12-inch. Mecca & The Soul Brother Remix is on the Good Life best of album even though it's not called a remix but it is the same remix version on the cassette. Still it would have been nice if they had been included on this reissue.

Comment: The MECCA AND THE SOUL BROTHER remix is also missing. When the original album was released, both remixes were identified as * Bonus Tracks*. For whatever reason, they did not want to include those bonus tracks here again.
