Li(f)e is a marked evolution for Sage Francis. The celebrated agentprovocateur of hip hop brings his signature wordplay, a dazzling mix of sardonic humor and biting social commentary, to a setting complimented by a talented band consisting of producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Iron and Wine) and cohorts Jim Becker and Tim Rutili of the acclaimed Chicago outfit Califone. Along for the ride are some of indie rock's most prestigious songwriters. Take album opener "Little Houdini," a stirring Steinbeckian tale of prison break, with music written by ex Grandaddy frontman JasonLytle. "We specifically sought out songwriters who had never worked with a rapper," Francis explains. "I didn't want them to write music they thought they should for hip-hop. The music for 'Little Houdini' was a long epic instrumental piece Jason had just hanging around which I then worked my story into." With collaborations with Chris Walla from Death Cab for Cutie, Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, Calexico, and DeVotchKa, Sage is pushing the envelope of a genre he helped create, with a confrontational tongue and wit to match Shepard Fairy's iconic album artwork. The record's title says it all: a deliberate amalgamation of the words life and lie. As Francis says, "What about life is a lie? What we're told about God is a lie. What we're told about race, gender roles, beauty, war, food, drugs, sexuality, capitalism, history, the nature of humankind...a gang of lies. I feel it in my gut, I think it in my brain, I write it with my hands and I speak it with my mouth."

Comment: Been a fan of Sage since he came into the underground scene... the production on this album was so fresh and new for a Sage album I couldn't help but be disappointed by the lyrics he decided to back it with in some songs.

Comment: A freind of mine told me introduced me to Sage's music about 5 years ago and I thought it was the best hip hop I have ever heard, slow down ghandi being one of my favorite tracks. Now I am listening to these tracks at work a year later after its release knowing that it was not that good. I cant do this. I give him 1 star for trying. Its different yes, but to some this doesnt cut it. Sage Francis has released a handful of titles. But now its folky gay shit from what used to be respect the broccli cock....What happened sage?

Comment: Granted its not Sage's best album, but as taste is subjective we all have our own opinions. I don't think sage meant this to be a proper hiphop album, its more relaxed feeling and is probably his hip-folk album - I like and thats all that matters.

Comment: its a shame that I loved sage so much but this last album is a slap in the face. first off the beats are very cool, and I enjoyed almost everyone like 10 out of 12 but its messing him up. it forces him into this clickety clak flow. listen to the lack of time he put into his lyrics, making the old familiar sage rhyme scheme appear on every single track. on all his other albums he keeps you glued to his every word, now its like he is just stringing along rhymes to get to the end of the verse so he can repeat a boring chorus 6 times and do it again. I feel disrespected as a listener and I don't know why he thinks he can get away with this, and people will just suck his dick and say its new and different its so awesome. being new and different is awesome, but you cant drop some attributes just to beef up your stats in others. just cause your working with a band doesn't mean you can slack off in the lyric department and start singing over all the tracks. look at the other times he has worked with bands look at all those tracks. there great. sage is extremely talented, im just disappointed he would sell out like that. I think we all know if you give sage a gritty ass hip hop beat he will never leave you disappointed. it was the buh buh shhh that got me it was the buh buh shh the break……… Simple as this: He got lazy as hell.

Comment: Wow!! Who new Sage had this many haters???? Is he the new Slug? It's fashionable and popular to talk shit about this dude? Get a life and stop the macho bullshit. Too much bravado just makes a man look gay anyways. And in response to those that claim Sage is an "asshole" or "disrespectful" ... I had a chance to meet him in Eugene and he couldn't have been friendlier . Whoever felt wronged by him was probably just acting like an asshole .

Comment: nah. It's not a big disappointment. Don't listen to other people opinions, cop the original cd and enjoy. The LP grows on you. Back in the days, when I listened to the first Company Flow album, I didn't like it. After a couple listenings I was a die hard fan. Don't throw away LP's after one listening party, guys... sorry for my english

Comment: I've d'loaded a few of sage's albums back in the day and I just can't get into it. I'm a hip hop head all day long but something there is something extra geeky about this guy. I'm not trying to diss, but this is just not hip hop to me. But there is a huge market for this type of stuff so I won't knock the hustle. Peace.

Comment: okay first of all.. before I check wreck for this. I am a fan of Sage Francis, i've probably played a healthy distrust well over 100 times all the way through. but this cd sucks. no beats on the whole thing, just rock n roll shit. lyrics are decent, but not enough to make up for the garbage ass music. two goods songs on the whole disk. save your money.

Comment: its pretty sad reading some of these so called "reviews". the bottom line is that the dude can spit on the mic and put on a good show. his cds and persona may be different but dont scrutinize him for being an original artist and doing so for years. you want to keep poking at him being a vegan or towards the tight jean wearing heads that support his music then thats on you and totally ignorant. while your sitting here leaving mindless comments on the board, this dude is performing at shows and releasing pretty good lp's for the fans that support his music. sure he is incentric but who the f*** is normal anyways. If this dude was any other mc in his place doing this music you probably wouldnt say shit. im also not being bias because im from the same state as him,if you like the music then support it, if not then be out and leave it at that. I dont care if this dude only ate lima beans and wore a yamakah, if his music contains content that others lack then I will peep it. big ups rhode island

Comment: This album is dope. Best blend of rock instrumentals and hiphop vocals I've heard in a long time. These two queers talking about jeans and being fat are the epitome of fuckin losers. I fucking hate leaving reviews, but I hate reading your dumb bullshit more and I have an urge to address it. Nobody gives a fuck if you don't like it. And if you don't like it, try leaving some criticism actually worth reading, like what you don't like about his flow or how you "KNOW" to make his music better. Did you just find out you're adopted or the milk man's your dad? Stop displacing your pathetic feelings onto artists doing their shit. I'm guessing the other loser only likes skinny emcees, you like a well-toned bod with washboard abs don't you? Fagle. You've completely left his music out of your criticism. Just his appearance.

Comment: Why does Sage Francis hate is fans? I haven't listened to dude for very long, but, what I have heard is tight; at the very least original which is more than I can say about most cats. Also, what do people's jeans have to do with anything? Unless your a homosexual and prefer hip-hop heads to wear other kinds of jeans, why do you care what jeans someone wears? That's so superficial – utterly asinine. Lastly, why do people like slaine? Necro and Bill have nothing to do with Sage, so, I don't understand why Necro and Bill (both legends in their own right), detract from what Sage does.

Comment: sage francis is the definition of a hip hop faggot. hip hop buzz kill, hes a fat depressed vegan lame, anti-social virgin nerd boy. how is sage so fucking fat anyway? hes the fattest vegan ive ever seen. he hates his fans. which is understandable, how can you like sage francis? hes a fat, balding, vegan, that thinks hes tough. slaine would body this pussy. id like to see necro and bill dismantle this lard ass just for the hell of it. sage is reading this right now, and hes very upset. hell probably get a snack to temper his rage. drop some LB's for the next PETA shoot sage. sage will probably rhyme about a ceiling fan spinning in a dark room, over terrible production. nerds will cream themselves, and real hip hop heads will continue to ignore him. kill yourself sage.
