Summary

Montezuma's Revenge was created the old-fashioned way, with the MCs - A-Plus, Phesto, Opio & Tajai - and producers - Prince Paul & Domino - in the lab together from the beginning to the end of the recording process."

We rented a house" explains Opio. "Prince Paul came out, we had no distractions, we just did music every day. "It was cool" adds Tajai. "He had concepts, and its good to have an outside perspective - it was a great process." The result is a cohesive, creative Hip Hop album, the kind of project you'd expect from veterans like Souls of Mischief under the auspices of a genius producer like Prince Paul. Souls first encountered Prince Paul while touring with A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul back in the day. But it was on a more recent tour with Handsome Boy Modeling School that the seeds of this collaboration were planted.

So what exactly is Montezuma's Revenge? Tajai comments, "We recorded the album on Montezuma Street." The final product features 18 tracks of the quality Hip Hop you've come to expect from Hieroglyphics, with cover art by esteemed illustrator Steve Lopez (famous for his illustrations of Erykah Badu and others). Of course there's more to the title than the location of the recording, Tajai says "The deeper meaning is this album will make you crap yourself."

Comment: Much luv and appreciation to 'Souls' for a great show for real as they were well impressive despite the shit supporting acts. Although I was kinda disappointed not to see A-plus with the crew I had conversations with Opio, Taj, and Phest bout previous material and got my precious souls merchandise signed. To my man jaz who's always reviewing on this site I'm sorry have to inform you that Opio told me that basically this joint will never be available on vinyl due to the costs of pressing vinyl. I was kinda gutted when he told me this but hey bro CD's are better than nothing I suppose! Anyway to any long time Souls fans who've never seen this crew live don't sleep!! Trust me you won't be disappointed!!! Souls 93 til infinity for real! Peace! I'm outta here!

Comment: shit is dope. "postal" is my top favorite and "fourmation" gave me that next level, classic souls of mischief I had been waiting for. groups and bands are not easy to maintain over so many years, but souls of mischief prevail. AND they still provide cats with classic material that's personal, relevant and authentic. definitely a must have that I will appreciate more years later and i'm still digesting 93 'til infinity!!!

Comment: I got excited when I heard Souls were teaming up with Prince Paul. One of my fav producers and groups. That said: I love these guys but this album is sad. The last album this group put out was ten times better. I dig maybe 2-3 tracks out of the album. The Trilogy album and '93 til infinity blow this out of the water.

Comment: I'm really feeling you jaz on those last comments. Where is the vinyl??? I may be a dinosaur and I don't care if its approaching 2010 but many cats universally are still feeling the vinyl. Anyway I'll end up copping this CD after a few child like tantrums and outbursts as I'm a huge Souls fan from back in the day! Dammm where is that vinyl????

Comment: Very good album..but again had to borrow the cd from a homie due to NO VINYL..WHY? This year has seen easily the lowest vinyl releases (12 and lp)to date..and im sure 2010 will be worse..ppl on the net will illegaly download ur shit either way..so whats the loss in doin records too?eh?thoughts? and its always funny to me when a "record" label dont press records for their artists...how bout clear label cd's and digital downloads..fuckn wack..groan groan

Comment: Yes BURGOON, I gave 5 stars to Wale because I feel it is well deserved. Like I said before, I am NOT hating this album. I am just not goin to follow the bandwagon and give the same response everybody did. I am a leader. Dingleberry that while you're playin "tag along" and "grab ass". 3 stars is my unbiased opinion. 4 stars went to People Under The Stairs' Carried Away, which I like over this one, considering West Coast MC's.

Comment: Anyone with the cd booklet know if Prince Paul co-produced Tour Stories? It was originall reported on the net he did when the single was released but it states on this page Domino produced it himself. Wondering if it's a mistake because it sounds like prince paul had influence on the song.

Comment: See J-Aura,you gave Wale 5 stars, and you gave this 3,lol,in my eyes this is in the top 3 releases so far this year, hooks are tight, topic's can relate too,and flow is there as always, with Prince Paul on the boards, instant classic,In my eyes I can't see anybody not liking this album,it has something for everybody, unless they just like going against people, cause most people love this album, and one dingleberry don't.

Comment: I'm not hating the album, but I am also not that moved. The lyrics are nice and smooth, and most of the beats are pretty tight. But it's the hooks that are the major flaw for me. They are either too simple and/or have a lack of energy to them. I respect the overall craft of the album, but I prefer People Under The Stairs as far as West Coast artists right now...

Comment: These guys always have incredible lyrics, but I'm not feeling the old-school style beats as much, tour stories is definitely my favorite. Hiero's Full Circle on the other hand has incredible beats, wish it was more like that one.

Comment: CLASSIC!!! Every single track on this CD is dope. I think it's one of the best albums to drop in the last 9 years. "Tour Stories" and "You Got It" are every bit as good as Souls of Mischief's old stuff and still has the same vibe. I hope other artists follow their lead and start making music like this. This is how it's done.
