We already know that his rhymes are subpar, but you have to understand and appreciate his pure freestyle method of establishing those rhymes. Sure, there are PLENTY of MC's who freestyle much better, but a lot of times when they freestyle, it will be a mix of "off the top" and older pre-written rhymes. Still hot nonetheless. People like Mos Def, Lupe, Phonte, even battle rappers like Cassidy. The thing that gives Lil' Wayne his popularity is the way he commands a freestyle in the booth. A few punchlines may be pre-written, but I know for sure that 90% of it comes off the top of his mind. He'll even slip up every now and then, but what does he do? He'll pick that bitch right back up and keep runnin with it. You gotta respect that... And for the record, he DOES give props to other artists. His mentor Jay-Z, artists of his generation like Kanye and Jeezy, and the many different artists that he's willing to collaborate with... Comment: Being an MC, requires you to move the crowd, period. It's not necessarily about "what you say", but it's also "HOW you say it". Both of em have to go hand-in-hand, and that's the way REAL hip-hop music has always been. Real, true school, underground, street, authentic, whatever kinda label you wanna throw on it. D-TRAIN, if you don't like Wayne, it's understandable. His rhymes ARE cut nursery school-simple in a commmercial-like fashion, but he freestyles a majority of his verses, and hits decent punchlines from time-to-time, just like his mentor Jay-Z. I think this album will be experimental in sound and prove his versatility. And to DATNIGGABEON1, define "make hits for the masses". Because Little Brother makes some of the best fusions of excellent lyricism, clarity, subject matter any average human being can relate to, pumped over house party style and experimental beats. Lack of "hits" is purely lack of promotion from mainstream TV and radio. Shit... take the "hit" record both them and Weezy was on, "Breakin' My Heart". All 3 verses hit hard. Pooh comes in proper, Phonte's verse was top notch, and Weezy hit with back-to-back punchlines. 9th slayed that beat with them sharp-ass snare claps. Hook was catchy and direct to the point. And like I said before, the song keeps up with "what is said" and "how it's said". UNFORTUNATELY - and I was still living in NC when it came out - it was rarely bumped through Carolina's local radio. Why? Exploitation, commercialism, the greed of capitalism, you name it. The "masses" are gonna like WHATEVER is pushed in heavy rotation through the airwaves. |

So when Master P and Lil Wayne's own camp started hustling their music independently, why how many years later you are trying to explain to me what he's "trying to do" by releasing commercial tracks. I've seen it all. And Lars, thank the Caribbean for this music you supposedly enjoy. The Caribbean started this music (google Kool Herc) plus Phife, Lil Fame and The Juggaknots are all Trini, just to name a few. And J Aura (respect to you) but I checked the Dr. carter track and before I could start to listen, why did Swizz Beats jack 9th Wonder's production of Cesar Comanche's Lamb To Lion track off the Paper Gods album (which was released in 2002). What frustrates me the most is when there is already a lack of originality in the music and then it's not even a fresh sound when something “acceptable” comes out. The intent of the track is okay but again he is trying to do a track dissing wack rappers? Really? |
