Summary

Gravitas, Talib Kweli's sixth solo album, began to take shape in May, during the weeks following the release of Kweli's fifth solo album, Prisoner of Conscious. Loaded with guests, Prisoner of Conscious was well received and reviewed, and gained Talib many new fans to add to his already large following. However, Kweli soon found himself wanting to record more personal material and really document his journey thru music. When singer Ryan Leslie, who created the platform that Kweli is using to sell Gravitas, approached him with the idea of selling direct to fan, songs that were just rough ideas began to fully form in Kweli's head.

"One of my favorite things about today's hip hop is the honesty," says Kweli. Today's most popular rappers aren't always politically correct or deep, but the best are unflinchingly honest. While my story may be documented, I have never truly told my story thru music. My true fans have heard bits and pieces thru the years, but Gravitas sums up my experience until now."

The new songs reflect a continued determination and drive in Talib Kweli, impressive because of the fact that Prisoner of Conscious was released less than six months ago. Considered one of the top tier lyricist of all time and name dropped in songs by everyone from Jay-Z to 2 Chainz, Talib Kweli has defied the odds and remained relevant while never compromising his art, quite a feat in today's music business. The respect he is given is evident when Raekwon from the Wu Tang Clan drops by to spit on Violations. Talib Kweli has also showcased new artists throughout his storied career, giving breaks to people like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole long before they were embraced by the mainstream. This streak continues with Brooklyn's own UnderAchievers, who pop up on the Statik Selektah produced New Leaders. The OhNo produced Art Imitates Life features classic lyricism from Kweli, Rah Digga and Black Thought from the legendary Roots, and Austin's guitar prodigy Gary Clark Jr. shows up for Demonology. All of this leads up to Gravitas' final track, Colors of You, featuring Mike Posner and produced by the late, great J Dilla of Slum Village fame.

Comment: Talib kweli seems to be losing it lately. It's a dying shame a lot of artists seem to be running out of ideas to compete. I hope he learns and gets back to doing what he does best.

Comment: I agree with most of you regarding Kweli's previous stuff and unlike his boy Yasiin (aka mod) he hasn't been able to make music that stays with you like reflection eternal... but.... I'd have to say that this is definitely his best I've heard in a while. I recommend!

Comment: these reviews are horrible. this is undoubtedly talib's best solo record. if the other reviews have you skeptical, just listen to the track, violations. the beat is crazy good. all the beats are good on this, actually; gives the album a really cohesive feel.

Comment: I was afraid this was going to happen. When I first listened to this CD, I was actually feeling the vibe but after a while, I found no replay value involved. Sounds like Gutter Rainbows part II. Just like Biggie, I am starting to lose "faith". What happened Talib? What happened to that fire? That flow? Innovative doesn't always mean you have to cater to the masses. I understand that you want to experiment but unfortunately, you're going to lose a lot of fans during this process. While your lyrics are on point, there is something missing. I am flummoxed as to why you keep doing this type of music with that flow you've had since "Quality"? I'm a fan kweli but, please go back to the drawing board and pursue better beat selection. Bring back that "Train of Thought" flow! So with all do respect my friend, I do agree with some of these posts contributed to the lack of Kwelity that you bring to the table. I would rather you prepare for another project taking awhile to do so rather than dropping an album every other month like Too Short. I'm not hating, I'm frustrated. Peace!

Comment: the last "real" album of talib kweli was Reflection Eternal (Talib Kweli & Hi-Tek)-Train of Thought, and perhaps Liberation with Madlib. whatever kweli is on, I honestly pray he finds his way back

Comment: I'm really pushing for this release to be a good one. I've always been a fan of Kweli but for some reason, I've been turned off to his re-invented type flow. His subject matter is always on point with being diverse when he spits but sometimes his beat selections don't cater to his sound/flow. I don't want to be one of those backpacker/fanboy types that say I wish he would bring back the "fortified live" or "Mood" flow back but that is what I wish he would do. Keeping in mind that he is trying to do what he wants to do when it comes to changing the sound of music in his view and how he interprets it, I understand what he is doing. I also understand that he has been doing this flow/style since "Quality". Maybe I am just old school. Maybe I am just not susceptible to certain types of changes when it comes to emceeing but I respect the guy and what he has done for the art of emceeing. I will say though, his appearance on the RA the Rugged Man album "Learn Truth" was the fire that Kweli is more than capable of spewing on a consistent basis. Do your thing Kweli. Hope this is a banger!
