Summary

Following Train of Thought, Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek split as the group Reflection Eternal, and Kweli used his first truly solo debut to attempt a move toward a more mainstream sound. 2002's Quality accomplished this goal to some extent, featuring production by a host of different producers, including DJ Quik and Kanye West. Additionally, Dave Chappelle provided two features on Quality. The album was met with widespread critical acclaim and received some mainstream attention thanks to the Kanye West-produced single "Get By" which peaked at #77 on the Billboard Hot 100. Quality peaked at #21 on the US Billboard 200 and at #6 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.

Comment: Talib drops hot lyrics and the beats are just so-so. It's not as good as the Reflection Eternal album but Talib is still one of my favorite MCs.

Comment: Lyrically Talib is hot, no question, but the beats sounds like stuff Jay-Z, Nas and others rejected and Talib just scooped up. Why is Talib rhyming over a DJ Quik beat? If the beat was hot the question wouldn't have been asked. It's like Talib is trying desperately to get popular, and doesn't realize he is. If he wanna sell more records I don't blame him, I just think he got wack beats, and just got whoever was popular. Disappointing. Should never make another album without Hi-Tek at the boards.

Comment: Kweli is one of the best emcees out there, hands down...This album is not as good as Reflection Eternal, but is still better than most everything else available..."Good to You" is a classic.

Comment: It’s alright! Kweli always has good lyrics and has a point to say but the beats are the problem. There aren’t too many straight hip-hop beats more R & B beats and a lot of females singing in the background. There are some good songs- the intro is cool, and so are numbers 9,12,13 and 15.

Comment: Don't listen to people who diss this album.. This is way too dope. If they diss it they don't get it. Wonderful, one of last year’s best albums, no question.

Comment: After listening to all the tracks it’s a tight, well put together cd and he has a nice steady flow. You could just chill out with this cd. Everyone who doesn’t feel this is wack.

Comment: Yo, this album is pretty damn good. He has a steady flow and is well developed. He's been in the game for a long time so he doesn't want to be placed in a box. This is an emcee who wants to explore and rock as many shows as he can. Yo, he's a true emcee and he's going to be around for a minute. Keep doing your thang!

Comment: C'mon now, “Quality” is one of the most important albums to drop in a while. The album is hot for one reason- its cohesiveness/togetherness and overall feel. Forget the beats -even though they're bangin’- just listen to the lyrics, that alone should be enough. If you actually pay attention to the lyrics you should have no complaints.

Comment: with the exception of a few tracks, this album really disappointed me. as always kweli had some brilliant ish to say but his flow is tiresome. "talk to you (lil darling)" and "guerilla monsoon rap" are the standouts, mainly because bilal is cool and black thought and pharoahe are lethal, respectively.
