Summary

Four years after the release of their critically acclaimed debut "Connected," The Foreign Exchange returns with their sophomore set, "Leave It All Behind."

Consisting of singer/songwriter Phonte and producer Nicolay, The Foreign Exchange came together via the online hip-hop community Okayplayer.com in 2002. After trading files through Instant Messenger for over a year, Nicolay (living in his native Holland at the time) and Phonte (a Raleigh, NC resident) completed their debut album before they ever met each other in person. The album, "Connected," was released in 2004 to positive reviews, and was praised by legendary DJ's such as Jazzy Jeff, King Britt, and DJ Spinna for its inventive mix of hip-hop, R&B, and electronica.

"Leave It All Behind" finds The Foreign Exchange much closer in geography (Nicolay has since become a resident of Wilmington, NC), but located much further from their hip-hop origins. The duo's second full-length is a dark, multilayered affair that features Phonte showcasing his abilities as an exceptional lead and harmony vocalist, while Nicolay extends his musical palette to include sprinklings of jazz, downtempo, and house. The lush, Darien Brockington-assisted "Take Off the Blues" picks up where Connected's sleeper hit "Come Around" left off, while the complex polyrhythms and dreamy synthesizers of "Sweeter Than You" are described by Phonte as "swing jazz for the next century." Marc Mac (of legendary UK production team 4hero), also contributes a string arrangement to the duo's glorious cover of Stevie Wonder's oft-forgotten 1991 gem, "If She Breaks Your Heart."

In addition to appearances from longtime FE affiliates Darien Brockington and Yahzarah, the album also features guest shots from producer/keyboardist Zo! and vocalist Muhsinah.

Comment: This album is amazing!Im not sure why "Esto" gave this album 1 star, it is a classic. Phonte is a beast on the vocal tip just like he is on the lyrical tip. This is a very well put together album. We love you in North Carolina FE, keeping making that good music.

Comment: I will say, I didn't read the other reviews before I posted mine. I would have to say I did want to hear phonte spit a little bit more than he did, but I couldn't be mad on the production. I mean the album mood was excellent. I think even if it is nothing but singing, I would still say I can't find anything wrong with the album. This album is more relaxing. I like ya'll's feed back though.

Comment: This is yet another outsatnding album. I mean connected was a great album, beter yet a classic, but this one is like on a whole other level. I love this album front to back. nicolay has to be one of the most slept on producers in the game. And as far as Phonte is concern, I look at him as a male lauryn hill. This is a genius album, and I would recommend this to anybody. I would think this is a classic 2x.

Comment: Its unfair to give this album 2 stars so I wouldnt recommend anyone looking too deeply into that, but for me this album was a huge disappointment. Not because its not dope, it probably is. But because after that long long long wait, despite all indications to the contrary, what I really wanted was Connected Pt. 2. That album has been steady on my playlist and I was lookign forward to adding to it. But Phonte singing........ let-down

Comment: I loved "Connected" and I also love the new direction. I love hearing groups evolve as long as the finished product is honest and fresh. The singing by Phonte is dope. As far as the production, if you like anything that Nicolay has ever put out, then this is a must have.

Comment: Yo I neva heard the 1st album, but i'm really diggin' the singin' vibe from Phonte. Somethin you sip and smoke to with your girl or listen to Nicolay's beats by yourself. Plus y'all know dude can flow already. Kinda remind me of neo-soul artist Bilal you dig it baby. Peace

Comment: This is a good album, regardless the direction Foreign Exchange took. The sound is sooo fresh, and its a continuation from " Connected". The only difference is that phonte sings.

Comment: Ya I agree with QS. Why waste such good production for an R&B/Soul album? These beats should've been rapped over...

Comment: i dont think its possible to be disappointed with this album if you actually listen to it... the best track on connected in my opinion was come around which had no rapping as well; big deal, they stepped it up and released the best album ive heard in the last decade any genre

Comment: I've got the album...anyone waiting for a Connected Pt 2 will be disappointed. I have to say I was very suprised at the direction they taking this in! Dont get me wrong the album is good..BUT...when u have a top producer and one of very few great emcees u would expect a classic as Connected was. WIth the hip hop game lacking these days I hoped this would be THE album to restore my faith. Again I say..its not a sh*t album but with Phonte singing on it for 99.2% of it, its essentially an RnB album?! Which is cool I guess, but I think if he had rapped as we know he can instead of singing....this COULD'VE been up there with as the best HIP HOP/RAP album of this decade.....

Comment: Too many fans will be dissapointed with this album. The Foreign Exchange took a new direction with their sound. Very Experemintal, and alot of soul. I heard the album and I really enjoy the musical landscape nicolay delivers. Phonte only Mc's on 1 song only !!!. He sings and croons throughout the album which sounds very soothing on nicolay production. This album will be slept on very much. Please give it a chance, and be open minded. I got love for them. " Daykeeper" is a banging track.

Comment: I love Phonte first of all...dude really rejuvinated my feelings on hip hop but I can't listen to a whole album of him going in a new direction with his music. I mean it is cool for two maybe three joints. but a whole album? I enjoyed Connected but this one sounds a little too far fetched...Still got love though..
