Summary

In 2007, while on tour supporting his album None Shall Pass, indie rapper/producer Aesop Rock wrote a fan email to folk singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson. A few years later they reconnected during the creation of arts-and-oddities blog 900Bats, which in turn sparked the pair's collaborative musical efforts. After appearing on each other's respective recent solo records, Aesop Rock- Skelethon and Kimya Dawson- Thunder Thighs, both found more worth pursuing within the group dynamic, and The Uncluded were hatched.

The debut album Hokey Fright was recorded over the course of a year using a variety of locations and devices, from voice memo recorders to fleshed out studios. Aesop and Kimya wrote, performed, and recorded the whole album, with the exception of the drums on "Delicate Cycle", which were played by James McNew of Yo La Tengo.

Comment: terrible album. poor production. weak lyrics. bad delivery. this might finally be the dagger to the heart of Aesops career as his fan base is aging and hence going to less shows and increasingly losing interest in him due to his infrequent and underwhelming releases.

Comment: Ace is dope, but this is hard to listen to. I don't care if your mom was the lunch lady, I don't want to listen to someone who sounds the the female raffie. Ace is better than this. Please don't do more Uncluded. Spend your time on a more worth while project.

Comment: Listened to it a couple more times and wanted to revise my previous 4 star rating to a 5. This album is awesome, full of raw thoughts and sweet antidotes. Grows on me every time I listen to it. Excited to see them in Denver July 5th. Will be there for sure. Thanks to Ace and Kimya for making music that is unique and refreshing! Makes me feel like i'm a kid again. I'll be Uncluded.

Comment: Lmao @ J-Mart.. INDEED, white kids with dreads need to die!! Well, Wiggers in a whole need to be nuked. Nahh, I really actually enjoyed Aes over more folk instrumentals & Kim did him justice... sorta like the movie Sweenie Todd (if you ever saw it). I dunno, sue my african-descendant azz, but I really liked it.

Comment: It's good. Unique for sure. Ace and Kimya have great chemestry, and a fairly regimented patterns. A lot of the songs seem to be structured in a similar way, building and climaxing at the same times. It's pretty cool though. Fun for sure.

Comment: Although I truly hate a-ronious's form of articulating, I agree 100% that the album is a 5 star original. If this music was presented in a soundtrack form for like a movie like Sweenie Todd or Aeon Flux or something, it'd of made more sense to the listener. Kimya actually adds humor to Aes's complex lyrics & accompanies it well like a shield with a sword. Fans NEED to understand Aes will 4ever try to advance his music in any shape, way, or form that he can. Yeah, for grimy instrumentals & word-play hip-hop fans this is pure trash.,, & we'll never really see a whole mess of urban kids blasting this cd lol. But, for cats back in the late 80s who loved new styles emerging like Del La's "3 ft. high & rising"...this cd is a great example of progression. As far as the Ughh cats, sit back, think white (lol), think of a post-apocolyptic soundtrack, listen to the bizarre concepts, & give it a chance.

Comment: Like Moonrise Kingdom meets hip-hop. Her voice reminds me of Liz Phair. Anyways, it's called "Hokey" which by definition means "corny" - it's meant for kids who grew up with fireflys, summers at the lake, bike rides, phish concerts, and otherwise. It seems they succeeded at what they were building - after that it's just a matter of taste.

Comment: I am gonna have to give this a try under totally different circumstances. By that I mean zooted out of my ever loving mind!!! I am not sure I enjoy this. I am not sure I can. I see what's going on here with the indie clash and melding of individual styles and I would likely enjoy this more live but on waxxxx????? not... too... sure. Aesop is still liley my nmber 2 all time though. This does not sway my opinion of him but I bet Kimya's fans are LOVING this joint. Good luck on this collabo.

Comment: I will probably ALWAYS think folk music is terrible (that and pop country). Aesop can do whatever he want's but that girl shouldn't be allowed to sing(if that's singing, fuck it, I'm a folk singer too). You can push the boundaries of Rap music all you want, but if it doesn't sound good, who cares. This has nothing to do with the current state of Rap or "positive" vs "negative" bullshit (I like both) I just think this thing suck from start to finish. Also how is this not an attempt at crossing over, Indie-Folk (blarrggghh) is trendy as fuck. I hope Aesop doesn't start working with Mumford and Douches...

Comment: Odd combo that, for the most part, works better than I thought it would. Even though I've got to admit that there are a couple of songs in which the blend of folk & hip hop just doesn't work well as it does on my favorite tracks of the album (Check out: Delicate Cycle, Boomerang, Alligator & The Aquarium). Nonetheless, I'm glad that there are some artists left in hip hop that aren't scared to push the boundaries of the genre. Also, fans shouldn't write off Aesop just because they don't like this album as this is not a solo effort. I'm sure his next solo album or collabo with other hip hop artists (another Hail Mary Mallon album etc.) will suit your taste better.

Comment: I love it. It's fun. This "hip-hop" shit is way too serious these days. There's enough negativity going on in the world, why continue to make songs about violence and money that you don't even have? Now THAT shit is dumb. This isn't. Not for everyone, obviously. But great music, nonetheless.

Comment: i'll have to disagree - Depart From Me felt like a pretty empty crossover attempt whereas The Uncluded feels far more legit to me with a lot more effort and creativity put into it. plus Aesop ain't goin nowhere, I believe Skelethon was his best selling album from what i've read, and he's always had a fanbase that largely is into fusions and weirder stuff

Comment: This album will do to Aesop's career as 'Depart From Me' did to Cage's career. Let's just say, we haven't heard from Cage in years... And J-Mart hit it on the head - Aesop Rock singing is painful to the eardrum.

Comment: i didn't know what to expect from this album, longtime Aes Rizzle fan hadn't heard much of Kimya tho. while on paper it seemed like an unlikely pairing I think they are an incredible team, this album is beautiful, a really great record. anyone getting all butthurt about fusing musical styles ie hip hop and folk, all threatened about the 'purity' of hip hop, wtf are yo so threatened by? go listen to your goon rap or recyclings of the golden era, your hate is corny. this is legit respectable music you ain't gotta talk ish on it, just don't rock it. saying that rhymesayers is killing hip hop is just laughable

Comment: I been a huge aesop fan ever since music for earthworms and in all honesty, im not really looking forward to this collaborative project. Yes its something different for aesop considering the change of sound and exploration but going by the few songs released off this project, its just a bad combo in my opinion. Im still gonna give this whole thing a listen when it releases cause its aesop rock but my hopes are set really low for this album.

I think this is a bold move on aesop's part but it sounds good and its good that people are still out there experimenting with hiphop and other forms of music
