    Summary

Uptown XO is DC through and through. Born as Jamaal Walton in historic Howard University hospital in '85, XO grew up immersed in the culture and music of the District of Columbia. Both parents were musicians and XO's first musical experiences include singing in the church choir and learning the piano, trumpet and drums. Being as active in the local scene as possible, wether it meant passing out mixtapes or working at sneaker shops with Wale, XO started to network and connect around town. Hitting the pavement led to meeting Oddisee and yU while they too were on the come up. They recognized the like-minded talent in each other and began to build, this was the beginning of the much heralded DMV group, Diamond District. The buzz grew from local to global with their 2009 debut In The Ruff.

His album Colour de Grey will only add layers of depth and nuance to his hardbody sound. Introspective, stylish and gritty, XO is a reflection of his DC environment. Colour de Grey straddles commericial appeal and underground grit, utilizing street smart lyrical content with an ear to the political, along with infectious soul stirring, head-nodding production.

Comment: It took me a few months to get around to this one but damn! I regret putting it off. It was def one of my go-to albums from about May 2013 onward and I am still listening to it. Been a fan of the whole DD movement since IN THE RUFF and absolutely love Oddisee's and yU's solo albums. I was a bit disappointed at first to see the absence of any "big names" like an Oddisee feature but XO really carved out his own niche but working solely w/ AB the Pro. Must have for any DD or MMG fan!

Comment: This record was good, nice solid 4 or 4.5 stars. XO is definitly the star here with the beats being 3.5 or 4. The haters below from DC seem to be screaming "Politics".

Comment: XO is gettin sharp - this is a sick record. Beats are cool - some really fresh - but XO definitely steals the show with his flow and charisma. Can't wait for that new Diamond District.

Comment: XO really stepped his game up, unfortunately most the songs on this album just don't work, questionable production choices makes for an uneasy listen

Comment: First off, I'm a huge XO fan, along with Diamond District and the whole DMV movement. After keeping this album in heavy rotation since its release, there is a noticeable difference in the sound of the first half of the CD versus the second half. While I absolutely love the first half, I'm having trouble warming up to the second. Older songs like "Flowers" and "Good Vibes", etc. from mixtapes were what attracted me to XO's sound, and it feels like he strayed a bit from that on the second half of this project. The beats compliment his delivery well with longtime collaborator AB the Pro, but it would've been nice to throw in an Oddisee or Kev Brown track. Overall, a solid contribution to the current landscape of hip-hop, and while I'll continue to support my man XO, I was hoping for a little more.

Comment: Been loving this emcee since Diamond District's "In the Ruff." Every joint I've been hearing him on since, was leading to this. The conclusion? Dope artistry. Grown man's yet fresh as flowers (pun) music. Support the really real!
