Never before has the golden era of Philadelphia Rap music been so well-documented onto a single mix than with the UK’s DJ AROE & The Soundmakers’ The Wreckshop. AROE is a Rap nerd, an aficionado. He has records that the artists themselves don’t have and this knowledge is apparent on The Wreckshop. Featuring more than 40 tracks from Philly’s finest, The Wreckshop came to fruition through a series of strange coincidences and sheer luck stemming from a comment AROE left on the Tuff Crew MySpace page. LA Kidd of Tuff Crew reciprocated the gesture and so began a conversation between continents – the US to the UK. “When I told him that even today if you’re DJ’ing in the UK at a Rap event, you can guarantee a positive crowd reaction by dropping ‘My Part of Town,’ he seriously couldn’t believe it.” AROE cheekily asked LA Kidd for drops for the mix which turned into hosting duties and eventually got him unreleased remixes for the CD and even brand new material from Too Tuff himself! The Wreckshop shines light on one of the greatest Hip Hop cities in the world and pays homage to pioneers of the culture of Rap music: original gangster rappers, the first female emcee to rap on wax, the transformer scratch, and so much more! For AROE, the blessing has been able to work directly with the likes of Schoolly D, Lady B, Cash Money, Jazzy Jeff (who now uses part of the mix in his live sets), all of Tuff Crew, Phill Most Chill, The Roots, and countless others. So go pick up The Wreckshop and show some love to the City of Brotherly Love that has tons of love for Hip Hop – and cheese steak.
