The legendary soul singer/songwriter Isaac
Hayes had struck it big by the time 1970
had arrived. Throughout the 1960s he
was responsible for composing several of the
greatest, soul songs of all time, including genre
staples like “Hold On, I’m Comin'”, “Soul Man”,
and “I Had A Dream”, and had scored multiple hits
through his lush, cinematic re-arrangements of
already popular songs. On top of this, Hayes had
systematically redefined what constituted an R&B
LP the year before, via the narrative-structured
soul classic Hot Buttered Soul. Suffice to say
expectations were high for the follow-up.
Hayes did not disappoint with 1970s’s The Isaac
Hayes Movement, which spent 75 weeks on the
Billboard 200 chart, peaking at #8, and enjoyed
widespread critical acclaim. (Though not quite on
the level of Hot Buttered Soul.) The Isaac
Hayes Movement featured Hayes’ signature
smoothness applied to songs by Bacharach &
David, George Harrison, Charles Chalmers, and
Jerry & William Butler. Still several years from his
“Black Moses Of Soul” period, The Isaac Hayes
Movement is early Hayes at his finest, for deep,
textured soul balladry, and impeccably arranged
performances. (Courtesy of Stax Records rhythm
