In his brief 32 years, James Dewitt Yancey better known by the names J Dilla or Jay Dee, was highly influential as a Hip Hop / Soul producer who created an incredible amount of productions for the likes of De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Common, D’Angelo and his own group Slum Village.
J Dilla was often dubbed “your favorite producer’s favorite producer,” and was highly regarded by hip hop artists and producers such as Madlib, Pete Rock, Mos Def, Pharrell, Waajeed, Flying Lotus, Kanye West, and ?uestlove.
His own albums “Rough Draft” & “Donuts” on Stones Throw, “Welcome 2 Detroit” & “The Shining” on BBE Records stand out as masterpieces of modern music production and capture the imagination of producers, DJs & all music lovers across the world. Ultimately, his tragic death in February 2006 has had a significant impact on the hip hop community. Besides countless tribute tracks and concerts, Dilla’s death created a wealth of interest in his remaining catalogue and consequently, Dilla’s influence on hip hop production ahs become more apparent.
