Unsuspectingly emerging from under the wing of Natalie Cole (for whom she served as conductress, arranger and keyboardist), Linda Williams' 1979 solo debut City Living on Arista Records confirms her as one of the prodigious female talents of the era. Produced and arranged by Richard Evans (Ramsey Lewis, Jack McDuff), City Living beautifully captures Williams' skills as both a singer and instrumentalist who's as comfortable singing on an uptempo disco-jazz fusion cut ("Do It") as she is playing keys on the easy glide of the instrumental-only "Oh Honey"; in other words, she's both Donna Summer and Betty Davis at once. Rereleased with a fresh pressing, City Living is a standout album from a truly standout talent.
