The Great Joyful Rebellion
Pretend You're Happy is the project of Jeremiah Morelock and a gaggle of backing musicians. Part of what makes the project what it is, is a conscious effort by Morelock to "become more emotionally risky in my song writing by depicting the 'it' that I believe in, without relying on sardonic exaggerations, double negatives, or political manifestos," he writes inside the CD case. It sounds like what might happen if They Might Be Giants hooked up with DeVotchKa, or if Dr.Demento went on a Kool-Aid bender with the Polyphonic Spree. Sound weird and wonderful? It is. Now a string ensemble, now a punk band, now a marching band, now a mini orchestra, now a folk solo act, now an early soul outfit, now a collection of swirling noise and feedback, the music rapidly and dramatically shifts between lifeworlds.
