Description
Sammy Campbell, a northern soul icon, was plagued with a tumultuous musical career that left him in relative obscurity-until now. Born May 6th, 1941 in Plainfield, New Jersey, Campbell had made a name for himself as a member of the doo-wop group, the Del-Larks, and also as a solo artist. Campbell produced a number of charting hits, the masters to which were destroyed in a house fire in 1978.

Unfazed, and equipped with only a four-track and primitive drum machine, Campbell began creating some of his most soulful songs to date. These sessions featured Parliament players Eddie Hazel and Billy Spruill on guitar, plus a number of other neighborhood heavyweights. Making music in his spare time, Campbell kept no organization of his tapes, leaving most unmarked and stored away in the attic for nearly thirty years.

"Hold on Till Tomorrow" is an up-tempo soul single, rooted in disco, but seasoned heavily with danceable soul sensibilities. "Only for the Love of You" is a slower tune, which acknowledges the gentle ballads of Al Green and Teddy Pendergrass, but contributes something new and endearing to the movement of sweet soul.
