Clutchy and Fatty….High desert crunch meets city life punch for this collaborative project in sound. Instrumental elements of soul, jazz, hip-hop, rock and more resonate throughout the record. Acoustic and electric instrumentation set the tone and in their individual stlyes; Clutchy and Fatty navigate your journey through psych folk caverns of cactus dust to bloodshot rust-covered marine layer funk. It is distinctive, original and fresh, paying homage to the past, present and future. Visionary folk funk.
“Jungle Law” gives a glimpse into Boogie Belgique’s sonic palette. Tough hip hop beats and funky live guitar follow an intro of jungle ambience as a trumpet presents the melody. Soon some swingy big band jazz enters the song in an almost ghostly manner, while the insistent beat keeps the dance floor moving. Album opener “Go Slow” shows a different side to the coin giving the listener an uptempo broken beat rhythm, some bouncy bass guitar, snippets of string loops, and a lovely, forlorn vocal line that echoes the past. It’s a beautiful concoction, and Boogie Belgique delivers on many aspects of this style throughout his eleven track album. Volta is a satisfying trip in an aural time machine.

On one hand, the thematic darkness that hangs over most of these songs exposes Beck for the creative doomsayer he is–just another sullen young man with a gift of the native tongues. On the other, the life-affirming irreverence with which he drops harebrained couplets, monologues and call-and-response chants based on designer-jeans brands betrays the glowing confidence of someone in love with all the places the creative process can take you. Grooving all the while, Beck seems like the loving creator of a ’90s version of the electric Dylan frenzy. And ODELAY seems sorta like his BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME.
Originally from Brighton, Kutmah made his name while living in the US, releasing some acclaimed mix tapes and building up connections with the Brainfeeder & Low End Theory crews. In 2010 he was deported to the UK, lived in London for 5 years and now resides in Berlin (while still holding down a show on the East London-based radio station NTS). In Summer 2015, prolific leftfield beatmaker Kutmah released the 20-track instrumental beat album BLK/SMR on Bandcamp. During March 2016 he selected & sequenced his favorite nine tracks for this limited-edition 10″ vinyl / cassette version of BLK/ SMR on HIT+RUN.
Down in scenic Auckland, New Zealand, tucked in a small basement studio, musician Leonard Charles & his friends paid tribute to Dilla’s landmark release of “Donuts” by re-recording the entire 31-track album on live instruments. Charles gives the tracks a modern funk reinterpretation on live bass, drums, clavinet, Rhodes & synths – sans any sampling of the original source or sourced material. Featuring vocals by Anji Toy, Adi Dick, Ruby Walsh and Georgia Anne Muldrow on the emotional tribute “Airworks (Forever)”.
Black Milk and Nat Turner return with Sunday Outtakes, a 7″ vinyl release consisting of 5 tracks created during a week-long jam session – the same jam session that produced the acclaimed instrumental album The Rebellion Sessions.
